Two common types. Figure blades have the serration one the toe of the blade which is intended used for braking to do the spins and jumps. The can be difficult to learn on since they require you to keep your weight on the heel during forward skating. Hockey blades are the easiest for beginners since they have a smooth toe and are more forgiving of weight shifts.

Throughout the last segment, I could only think that if Gainax were animating this, it would have probably ended with Tadano having an attack while Komi was visiting, then she tries to call 911 but can't speak. Then he dies because Komi couldn't communicate.
