The word "ecchi" is actually just a Japanese-ified pronunciation of the the letter H (H for hentai). Although it's used as a label for a specific type of anime, it's just a generic term for anything perverse/sexual (for example, "hitori ecchi", or one-person ecchi, is a slang term for masturbation). So when an H is on its own in Japan, it's usually being used like that. They got what she was saying, but they couldn't help but react to the innuendo.

Komi never really tought too deeply about the conecept of liking/loving someone since she didnt have friends before highschool until she met Tadano (H :P). The girls wanted her to realize that Tadano is more than a friend, who is helping to achieve her goal to make friendships. It's a mix between Kaguya-sama love is war and Komi but without the love story (though some characters have love interests in the show) and with a super powered main character.
