I somewhat know what you're talking about. For most zombie adaptations there's only so much you can do that can make one different from another but they all have the same concept of some virus/disease spreading like wildfire and everyone else just trying to survive. The only way to differentiate a good zombie adaptation from another is how well they flesh out the society aspect of the zombie breakout and so far this episode shows that a little bit.

The spores were cut from the show to make it more scientifically plausible. They said they consulted scientists who told them if the fungus spread by spores in addition to bites, the spores would be all over the place, not just confined to a few basements and sewers or something. They were a gameplay element to increase the apparent risk of infection. The only part of the story the spores were really significant in were after the capitol building attack where Joel and Ellie run into the subway and Ellie doesn't wear a mask. In the show they've already basically implied that the scanners are sufficient enough to detect infection, and that's why they had that scene with the little kid in orange. There's no need for spores in the show at that point.

Hey I'd rather be safe than having random smugglers coming and going bringing in a potentially deadly fungus that can wipe out the whole quarantine zone. Sure, I'd hate the restrictions, but I'd appreciate them for as long as necessary before humanity fights back. I suppose they could erect giant walls and just scan everyone who comes and goes and just kill everyone who is infected upon returning but the population would probably slowly dwindle to nothing with that strategy.

@vesra but it's also scientifically accurate for fungi to spread through spores. Also cordyceps fungus actually exists and not all ants are infected the world over. Spores have limits and they could've easily added restrictions to the spores like they can't survive exposure to the environment for long periods of time in order to restrict the spread.

A few changes from the game that I loved: 1. The fakeout with the truck when they were trying to escape: In game they were hit by another truck not the crashed plane. So this makes me believe they will likely have more fakeouts. 2. They show more humanity from the "bad guys": The soldier who was about to shoot joel dead didn't say I'm sorry in the game like he did here in the show. And, also with the female Fedra comforting the kid as they euthanized him. 3. They did better at establishing Joel as a smuggler in the story. 4. They gave Joel a way better motive to take Ellie and complete that job. 5. Joel's PTSD rage moment was completely new and such smart writing to add to the original game! I haven't played this game since PS3 version and I remember the game beat for beat. Granted I don't watch NEARLY as many shows as the trio, especially Roshi and Sheera, but my vivid memory of it is such a testament to this game and how it affected me on an emotional level. Definitely one of my favorite series of all time.

the thing with spores is they can infect a large area for years. virus's just die after a few days. so its incredibly stupid to write them out. theres basically no vector for them to spread if there are no humans around. makes the whole scenario stupid.

the reason the spores are better is they can infect whole areas for years and spread via the wind to new places. they are always a clear and present danger. virus's on the other hand are very limited on how they spread. they are incredibly weak outside a body and last only a few days at most. meaning this 'zombie apocalypse' would have died out after only a year or two. with no people around, theres no more threat. but the spore persist for years. saying that it makes it more scientifically accurate kinda misses the point of it being even LESS scientifically accurate. in other words, the spores have scientific evidence to create a zombie apocalypse a while virus's cannot. its basically magic that keeps zombies alive in shows like the walking dead. whereas spores will literally keep things alive in real life until they die and spread more spore.

Someone probably said this already since I’m late to the reaction but the fungi was in the food. in the beginning they mention jakarta which is where most of the worlds flour comes from. In the game it said the food was contaminated and that's why everyone got infected. Throughout this episode they don't have pancake mix, they refuse the biscuits, sarah doesn't eat the cookies and they didn't get the cake which in the end saved them.

They have already watched all the shows they read the manga of if I'm not mistaken so they don't know spoilers but other media based off games or other media they've most likely consumed I expect them to spoil so if I haven't read or played the original content I watch on my own and then with them

to be honest, regardless of spoilers if you watch with them for the first time you aren't getting the full force of the show. like it's just true. i've seen them react to so many things and lupa/sheera/sometimes roshi will always make jokes or comments during certain moments that make the scenes hit less than if you watch by yourself. again, this isn't a complaint, like i said i always watch by myself first and love watching shows through their eyes. but again, to each their own. this is only natural. if you are watching a show through a channel in a little box while they literally commentate of course the effect will not be the same as watching by yourself in silence focusing on the content

Episode 3 and 5 are great too they change the story in the show compared to the game because well the game is full of shooting and boring stuff that shouldn't really be in a show. They expand on the story in better ways than they did in the game. If you played the game or watched it you'd know there's a lot different but most main events are still in the show. Overall I think the show is way better than the game but the game will always be a classic

Great gameplay but story sucks by default considering what happens to Joe and everything after including the ending/final battle. I usually don't have issues with main characters not having unbreakable plot armour and could care less about social politics(which is being used as a meat shield to downplay genuine storytelling criticism) but the way everything unfolds is very poorly written. From what I've seen so far, netflix may be able to make a far better TLOU2 adaptation and undo the lazy storytelling elements in the game, even if it follows the same plot.

I both sides have good & bad criticisms & yours isn't really that much better than what some people have been saying here. Giving a story based game a show doesn't mean the story in the sequel was amazing, the 1st was already loved & while I don't like the way some things were done in the sequel, there are still good parts in it. All I ever see is "the story is ass" or "the story is amazing, actually", meanwhile every reasonable criticism I've seen was able to point to specific points beyond the scenes we know & say what could have been done better & why. I'm looking at people like you who act like the story has little to no faults crazy cause it very much has some issues that could've EASILY been fixed & made the story better (while still keeping a lot of the main stuff that happened, I don't think the story needed a complete revamp.)

(Spoiler for The Last of Us 2 video game's ending) I didn't enjoy the story of The Last of Us 2, because I wasn't supposed to find joy in the events that took place. It left me feeling empty, I couldn't even feel if it was good or not because we weren't allowed a conclusion. The climax we all wanted to reach. Just because I don't like it doesn't mean I don't feel that it achieved its goal. Which I feel was to make everyone feel unsatisfied and empty. Because that's how the characters were feeling, that even if they'd kill eachother, they wouldn't even get satisfaction out of it. Which I feel is what the whole point was. I don't like The Last of Us 2, but it left me with a unique feeling any other story hasn't left me with. I'm unhappy, but that's just how the apocalypse goes. It just all turns to shit. And no one's happy.

There's this theory floating around and I want to share it with everyone since I think it adds a nice touch to this episode. When Sarah and Joel were eating their eggs, the radio made reference to Jakarta, which is where a lot of flour is produced. The grandma next door was seen consuming biscuits, which contains flour, so it is fair to assume that this is what caused her to change. It's also a good thing that Joel didn't get the cake, Sarah couldn't cook birthday pancakes, and that she didn't eat the cookies that were offered to her. Since they are all made of flour, they might've been done for.

I think it was a great first episode but some people said it handled the intro better than the game and that I'm not too sure of. The game had a little bit more suspense at the beginning - explosions/fire downtown that Sarah sees from the window, the Neighbor coming through the glass door and Joel being forced to shoot them, handing the gun to Tommy and asking him to keep them safe. The show's version is good too and anyone who hasn't played the game won't miss the difference so it's fine, but saying it's better goes a bit too far imo.

Joel (or Tommy) is a veteran, given it's 2003 and their age, probably a gulf war veteran. 3. Viper and Kurt 2 from Ellie and Joel's movie night in TLOU2. 4. The infected Mrs. Adler was already deaf and almost blind due to age, and didn't notice Sarah. Infected now have barbed mouths, fine change. 5. Mrs. Adler the infected neighbor mauling her family replaced Jimmy, who was changed to the burning farm owner. 6. The car ride sequence was very nicely changed with the off-road, plane crash, and flaming copcar that separates Joel and Tommy. 7. The bite chart shows varying degrees of infection from minutes by the head/neck, hours on the chest/arms, and at most a day on the legs... much faster than in the game. 8. Robert is instead killed trying to scam Marlene and the fireflies, not Tess and Joel. 9. Holy shit, super super early assault rifle. That's gonna make a lot of this easier. huh.

I think it's actually the soldier that Joel was dealing to/killed at the end. If you notice, the kid's left hand was twitching and they had brown hair. The soldier also has brown hair (cut because military), and the camera immediately pans to his left hand on his gun which is twitching. I'm kind of upset they wrote the spores out of the show since that's how fungi mainly spread. Why not just make it a virus or bacterium at this point? And to those who say it's unrealistic because everyone would be sick; not all ants get infected with cortyceps fungus and it spreads in a similar way. It's not like spores travel forever or are immortal with minds of their own. The reasoning just doesn't make any logical sense. I haven't seen a well thought out argument over it yet. It's probably mostly so actors don't have to wear masks a lot. They probably didn't want to enter into the political arena surrounding masks as well. The special effects surrounding spores and their detection was probably another headache to deal with.

You are correct, spores do not live forever, however they live long enough that they would be a significant problem if they were as infectious as the game shows. Real cordyceps wouldn't be able to traverse a human sized host body to take over the brain in less than a day, that is an insanely quick growth speed in relation to our sheer size, but the shown fungus is apparently extraordinarily quick acting. This means that any amount of spores in general would be infectious, which means after every exposure to those airborne spores people would have to burn their clothes and gear. You wouldn't be able to take off those gas masks before cleaning all the spores off. Also, gas masks don't last forever, they expire fairly quickly due to usage and environmental factors, and I don't think the human population we're seeing are continuously producing such filters to be disposed of constantly. To address the, why not make it a bacteria or virus question, because we can make antibacterial and antiviral treatments fairly easily, and vaccines are possible for viruses. Both also have a high mutation rate, which would mean after a certain point you'd be seeing a wide gambit of strains rather than a consistent infection. Fungi don't mutate as frequently, and are essentially too similar to our own cellular functions to have a proper vaccine or cure to deal with them, and antifungal treatments that do exist take prolonged usage for the infection to clear, which is time people don't have as seen with the prior mentioned insane infection rate of this fungus.

They can already measure infections with a device. They could still have bites be the main method of transfer as well. They could even have rules that the spores can't exist for long periods of time exposed to the environment. There are so many options and variables to consider but they didn't even try. It just feels lazy to me. It's like they didn't want to get into deeper explanations and just go with what people know. Sure there are antibiotics and antivirals but they can't be produced fast enough to cover millions to billions of people as infrastructure collapses. Even with Covid, doctors didn't have enough ventilators for people that had breathing troubles and that doesn't turn you into a fungus monster lol
