Canute 2.0

Hopefully they make Canute fit to this arc the way thorfinn is right now. But this episode is damn great and Canute with the biggest glow up in the series yet

Kenisha & Kim

to me the smoke looked like a signal fire more than owe we burned ur town to ashes but thts crazy if canute went tht dark shiiiiitttt he aint playing games he wants to change how things are maybe he will cross paths with thorfinn when he wants to go to vinland maybe

Lurkingposter

Season 1 was about Askeladd. Season 2 is about Thorfinn and Canute. The writer set them up to be the same age for a reason.

Devin B

I really forgot all about this nigga Floki. I hated him for hiring Askeladd to kill Thors over some petty shit.

Ginger Dwarf

I'm pretty sure the signal fires were a symbol. He didn't torch any villages, but he set all those bonfires across Eadrics entire land of mercia. TO go "Look, if you go against me, this is what your land is GONNA look like." Basically showing his land a flame, in reality it was just signal fires. But showing him how easy it would be to burn his entire precious land. That's how I read it anyway, it's not entirely clear.

Luffy_77

Not roshing clapping himself again lmao, they were all signal fires, Canute was basically saying thats how easy it would be for him to burn all Mercia to the ground, he specifically said "if I will it" rip Roshi back to back

Olemgar

To clarify, yes, the smoke was other signal fires. He didn't burn anything important, just the bonfires, to show that if he really wanted, he could torch that place to the ground whenever, and the only thing keeping him from doing so was the king's head.

KeYo

im pretty sure the person who voices the huge dude voices black beard in one piece

あなん

Incidentally,Earl Eadric turned to Canute's side, but was eventually executed by Canute in 1017.

danial javady

I agree, I think he wanted him to experience the horror of what he could do. He didn't burn the town, he meant to put things in to perspective.

Zazies Beret

Definitely think they were just signal fires (not actual areas being burned) just to show Eadric how far his reach extended to, and that he could easily signal them to lay waste to that whole region at any moment. He basically said don't make me press that button lol

Devin B

Canute just wanted to show dude that if he wanted to he could burn Mercia down with the quickness by setting up all those signal fires. Imagine making all those signal fires in the span of however long it took for them to talk, that was just a big flex on Canute's part.

Theo Vorster

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted the entirety of chapters 61 and 62. A little bit of clarification, Canute didn’t burn down all of Mercia right then and there, rather Canute was threatening the Earl of Mercia by showing that the Danes had the ability and means to burn all of Mercia down if Canute so ordered, and that Canute would be willing to actually follow through on such an order (even in spite of how much it would devastate the productivity of Mercia for a while). Basically it was Canute putting the proof behind his intimidation to the Earl. And if it wasn’t clear for anyone, while Canute becomes King of England in this episode, his older brother Harald became King of Denmark after their father Sweyn died in 1014. Basically the territories of the Danish crown were “split” between the two brothers as a matter of pragmatism, with Canute reconquering England, and Harald managing mainland Denmark (and Ketil’s farm, where Thorfinn and Einar are is located in mainland Denmark) Also another heads up, this episode is Thorkell’s only appearance (barring any potential anime-original scenes) in Season 2 of Vinland Saga. Canute will appear again in this season, but likely not until the second cour of this 24-episodes season. Also another bit of trivia from the manga that this episode likely cut for time, the Earl that Canute intimidated into turning cloak was later put to death in December of 1017 (by Canute). Also even though Thorfinn and Einar are only a year apart, the main reason why there is no chance that Thorfinn could have been part of the first raid/pillaging of Einar’s village (when Einar was a child and Einar’s father was killed), is because that raid was committed by English soldiers. The raid that killed Einar’s mother and sister was the only one committed by Danes (and at that point Thorfinn was already sentenced to slavery as his punishment). Hence why Einar despises all soldiers and “warriors” regardless of their nationality.

Musical Esscence

Canute really just went "No one else can be him as long as I breathe."

Shaun A

Damn Sheera's a clairvoyant

Ledish

Great parallel with Canute giving Eadric the same ultimatum that his father Sweyn gave to Askeladd last season; your home/kingdom, or your preferred ruler. Choose one.

ogking31

It was never mentioned that Canute will burn Mercia anyway in this episode

Yehaen

Roshi clapity clap clapped

WAY

This new player they got STILL ass.

Dune

Canute really said ay you get in my way then you'll "mysteriously" die too

Reborn

so its been 4 years since last season, cause this episode started in 1014 and now canut is king at 1018

zILovePelmeni _

no he said: imagine it, mercia has been reduced to ash. this signals werent houses burning they were just other signals

Barion

Canute wanted to show the dude what could happen to Mercia. Burning the land you try to rule makes no sense when there are still other options.

Skebaba

Yeah he wouldn't have poisoned Ethelred if he didn't have anything to lose anymore (i.e Cnut burned down Mercia like the line says, hence hypothetical he asks him to imagine)

あなん

The reason isn't clear, but I think it's because you can't trust someone who betrayed you once.

Vincent S Deluca

Sheets was right they were all signal Fires, he said to imagine Mercia being reduced to ash, each of those fires represented a town where Canutes forces had taken control and built a pyre. IF he didn’t cooperate, his men COULD have easily burned down everything, but he did so they didn’t.

ERRORCODE616

I'm interested to see what happens with Thorkell. If Canute unites England, there's not really gonna be a place for people like him who thrive off of constant war. Reminds me of Tanya when the ceasefire happened.

jogurtowski

Dunno if you guys are aware but there's constant static noise coming from the videos. Also, historically, there is no evidence for poisoning Aethelred and Edmund and they probably did REALLY die of natural causes.

Danny

Thorkell relishes war so he wants constant battle but Tanya dislikes war and sees it as unproductive and waste of human resources. The only reason why he opposed the ceasefire is because he knew it wasnt the end of the war and it allowed their enemies to escape and regroup. Thorkell just wanted to kill ppl lol

Jigga Man

Eadric fell down to his kneeees when Canute came

Pain Amvs

YES CONSTANT STATIC NOICE ON ALL VIDEOS. it can be fixed in 1 min in audacity. Someone needs to teach the editor.

Xan Acktor

Havent heard any static? Maybe your headphone are going bad? Or there mic?

Shockzz1234

Aethelred probably died of natural causes because that guy was old as fuck, but for his young son to die just a few months after him due to natural causes? That's sus lol. But yes, officially they weren't poisoned.

Shockzz1234

Interesting that Thorfinn and Canute have gone two different, opposite ways. Thorfinn was all about fighting and now, not so much. Canute didn't want to fight at all, now he's a warmongering King. The 2 boys have walked very different paths growing up.

jogurtowski

@Xan my headphones are fine it's only on their videos @Stephen yeah laptop speakers are caca you probably can't hear music properly on them either

Randy Petitmaitre

Canute said old man you should have stayed your ass in Norway 😂😂😂

Mirrorline

This episode is just a flashforward to show canute did became a king. We're gonna go back to the original timeline next week for Thorfinn and Einar's story.

Mirrorline

Just fyi, this episode is a flashforward to show how Canute became the King. We're goin back to the original timeline next week to show Thorfinn and Einar's story.

Zoinks

ROSHI HOW ARE YOU 0/2 MY GUY ITS TELLING US WHATS HAPPENING 😂😂😘

G. B.

Since you guys like this anime and were fans of magi, you should really check out arslan senki. Its a nice blend of political drama over warring nations similar to these. Really underrated show.

WeavyBoo

At first I thought dude was offering Canute 2 tons of silver, but then I remembered they in England, so a pound is a unit of currency, not weight. Bout to be like no way that pile is 2 tons

Alellion

Something I really came to understand during this episode regarding what makes this show so damn good - how comfortable it is in silence. Like good music, making use of the difference between movement/sound and stillness/silence is part of the piece. This show almost never feels like it's dragging things out pointlessly, even though I'd say more episodes than not are rather "slow". It builds tension so so SO well that it doesn't need to constantly be talking, or cutting in between things, and rather is just comfortable in methodically telling the tale. I adore it.

Chocolatedude100

Damn y’all received the clapping in the comments about the signal fires 😂

L.C.

Sometimes you guys are hella slow on thing lmao

Zach Saltou

As a non manga reader, i am absolutely feeling wild about chad canute and fuckin bewildered how he will tie in with thorfin "regaining his humanity" and how his will to live and what have you are all connected. clearly they will see eachother again but the anime is giving mad ill see you on the other side vibes

JsnSkg

Ofc Canute doesn't look the same as the first season. Time has passed. Ofc he'd age... cuz that's a thing that happens to human beings. XD Also another funny thing is...those soldiers really were out of his way. Thorkell literally turned, and took a step or two just to knock out a dude who was on the SIDE.

ok

Do y'all not remember when Cnute had his awakening on the battlefield? He basically ascended back then.

ok

The subs for this are bad. I always assume the subs we see aren't the same as what you're watching but this and Adventures of SInbad have showed me it's wrong to assume that. I don't get it. Edit: lol the dialogue at 12:45 was so fire and yet ofc they focus on the background hahah and that's not what Cnute meant by "valuable warning"

ok

true the parallel is interesting. but canute is just doing what he has to do ... sweyn's death caused a power struggle so, if he wants to protect his kingdom he has to fight. it's not necessarily "warmongering" like, once the necessary fighting is over i don't see him being bloodthirsty and waging constant war.

Thomas_Stilinski

its probably been said already but canute isnt king lol

Guav

And they got Thorkell riding in like Iskandaar(same va)
