is it possible for an anime to be this peak for a whole season straight?

Abdel

King Canute is actually a real person, the last scene is based on a famous Story of King Canute of England Commanding the waves - [W]hen at the summit of his power, he ordered a seat to be placed for him on the sea-shore when the tide was coming in. Then, before a large group of his flattering courtiers, he spoke to the rising sea, saying, "Thou, too, art subject to my command, for the land on which I am seated is mine, and no one has ever resisted my commands with impunity. I command you, then, o waters, not to flow over my land, nor presume to wet the feet and the robe of your lord." The tide, however, continued to rise as usual, dashing over his feet and legs without respect to his royal person. Then the King leaped backwards, saying: "Let all men know how empty and worthless is the power of kings, for there is none worthy of the name, but He whom heaven, earth, and sea obey by eternal laws." Thenceforth King Canute never wore his crown of gold, but placed it for a lasting memorial on a statue of Our Lord nailed to the Cross, to the honor of God the Almighty King, through whose mercy may the soul of Canute, the King, enjoy everlasting rest. "I have no enemies" THATS WHY HES THE GOAT, THE GOOAAT!

DrWomanRespecter

I wouldn't say Einar is a "lose cannon" and that he shouldn't have been brought along. He brought up a good point, Canute's rule will just lead to more losses, even if his goal involves uniting the strong for a greater purpose.

danial javady

(wall of text inc) Those who deeply understand Canute's character knew where he was going with his sovereign proclamation. They knew the point he was trying to make on how powerless he is in the grand scheme of things. Canute's character in the second season was explicitly expressed in episode 5. Canute's grand ambition is to end suffering, and to achieve this he will resort to means that to others view as cowardly. It took his father a grueling, insufferable, 10 year bloodbath to conquer England. So Canute took the route that would decimate the casualties by targeting the command, the king. Episode 5 gives an optic in to his character that should've led you to know before hand, before he even explained as a spectator(you are the spectator, as the viewer), what he was trying to express. He was never delusional and never has been. He's absolutely paranoid though! Because he has to be in his war ravaged world. When his subordinates conducted themselves like classic vikings, pilgrimaging everything in their path and enslaving others, what did he do? He had them all beheaded with their heads displayed on the road. When he was negotiating with the english retainer to the king of england?(i forgot bros name...). He could've razed everything to the ground like his predecessors and subordinates would have done to assert superiority and dominance. But again, he doesn't want that because his goal is to end human suffering. So what does he do? In the most masterfully possible manner he has English Retainer Bro experience first hand VISUALLY what it would be like to fight against Canute, WITHOUT ANY BLOODSHED. By covertly poisoning the English king and his son, he has taken control of England and commanded the respect of the Vikings as a ruler all while preserving human lives and resources. And when he was making his majestic assertion, he absolutely was right in the description he presented. He's absolutely the most powerful viking on the planet. It's not about his strength on the battle field. He commands the respect of all his vikings in an unprecedented way. There is only a very few characters that can command the vikings, and Canute stands at the peak of these very few. Canute is the only person who can command the tens of thousands of vikings and say "do not invade the homes. do not injure those who aren't fighting. you are not to steal anything" and have them obey. Which all draws back in to his major goal. His experience thus far has been uniformly the same; Kill everyone who's causing a deadlock in the pursuit of ending human suffering and minimize casualties to the greatest extent possible. He is always optimizing for this. He is NOT indifferent to the value each person has for society. So why does he need to invade these farms? Because he believes(as he's' experienced throughout his entire life) that there are those at the top that need to simply disappear because they're blocking progress. He views dialogue with them as meaningless and progress coems much quicker if he, the enlightened one, takes a hold of everything. (Whether you disagree or not is an entirely different, long discussion). The consistency in his actions are as follows: Target the command(usually corrupt), minimize casualties, and lead the Vikings towards a different path. As a commander who comes to the battlefield personally, his charisma leads them. He realizes that he needs resources to project his military might and take control of the barbarian societies. That is why he raids and steals. And Thorfinn recognizes this. There is no one who can unite the Vikings like Canute. Should Canute die, the landscape that he had created would all collapse and all progress would revert. Thorfin and Canute are after the same goal, with different means. Canute will innovate Europe where as Thorfinn will cultivate Vinland. I could go into more detail but I've already written a lot. Both Canute and Thorfinn are amazing characters.

YoungSalsa

Thorfinn made a great decision to bring Einar. Einar was at least going to call out Canute for the bullshit he was saying, while all Thorfinn would do is ask for him to leave and attempt to take the path with the least amount of confrontation. Thorfinn may be the best at his practice, but Einar needs to be there for someone to at least be vocal in telling them when there is some bullshit going on.

Peakland saga

Theo Vorster

For those who are interested in reading along with the manga, this episode adapted all of chapters 96 and 97. A fun bit of historical trivia, when Canute “commanded” the waves to halt in today’s episode, that was Yukimura essentially adapting the actual real life story of “King Canute and the tide”, which is an apocryphal anecdote illustrating the piety or humility of the historical King Canute the Great, recorded in the 12th century by Henry of Huntingdon. Ironically, said story of Canute has often been misinterpreted and flipped to make it seem like King Canute was an egotist who believed he had supernatural powers, despite the original story being about the literal opposite. Besides the standard shortening of dialogue, there wasn’t any significant difference between this episode and the manga. Though I suppose Thorfinn’s face looked even more visible messed up in the manga (since Yukimura’s manga artwork is often more highly rendered in detail than what the anime can feasibly achieve).

jordansamuel

Yeahh this show is something else 🔥

Theo Vorster
>>110162589

Einar also has the greater right to call out the bullshit than Thorfinn since Einar has also never been a raider/warrior/viking before either.

YoungSalsa
>>110162589

Yeah, Einar is the one who represents what it’s like to be more on the receiving end of Canute’s goals

Devin B

I like how Thorfinn, Einar, and Canute feel so strongly about their ideals because they each personally felt losses and pain prior to finding their ideals. Thorfinn killed many people for no reason and was haunted by their ghosts so he decided to contribute to preventing anymore meaningless deaths by not resorting to violence. Einar lost his home and loved ones to war and he wants to prevent those kinds of losses as well but he's not as extreme as Thorfinn when it comes to no violence. Canute wanted to create a paradise on earth but he realized that trying to go against the nature of things was basically like going against God's will so he's contempt with going with the flow of things and be in charge of the people who have sinned the most which are the Vikings.

Jaden Coleman
>>110162459

I actually really appreciated Einar being there. He made some very valid points and I thought challenged Canute's methods very well. Canute wanting to create paradise by saving vikings and united all men doesn't make sense if you have to stand on a mountain of bodies to get there. Love this story

metronxtdoorr

“I have no enemies” 🐐is really one of the hardest lines in anime/manga. Thorfinn one of the best written characters of all time🤷🏾‍♂️

Vincent S Deluca
>>110161236

Several Characters are based real people, Canute and Leif are obvious ones, Thorfinn was also a real person, Thorfinn Karlsefni. He's the guy who followed Liefs route and made it to Vinland

Jaden Coleman
>>110162589

This!!! Man as I was watching that scene unfold I quickly realized just how important it was for Thorfinn to bring Einar. He did such a great job challenging Canute and calling him on his shit, I think it was just the right amount of aggression mixed with common sense. So good

Lupa is Dadi

It seems that thorfinn indeed has no enemies

earthphoenix7068

Remember the guy that is punching thorfinn has killed people in less than 10 or 20 hits

Giyuu

I guess it’s peak 🙄

Oliver

Crazy to think that Canute showed up with exactly 1% of his entire army Also today the Social democracy of Denmark is doing pretty good today Canute so thanks for making our paradise lmao ;)

L.C.

Its always ironic how Canute goes against God's "word" and tries to act in rebellion against it to find a paradise on earth but Thorfinn and Thors character and what they strive for is basically who Jesus Christ was in the bible. Multiple parallels between Thorfinn's character and Jesus Christ.

MWS

Roshi in Vinland: Yeah Thorfinn preach, fuck violence Roshi in EVERY OTHER SHOW: just kill the nigga, SHOOT HIM, PLEASE

L.C.

This is just the start of Thorfinn's character. So remember that for when season 3 hopefully rolls back around.

Nick

I have no enemies

Sauce Sorcerer

This was an amazing ep. I'm also just noticing this mf Lupa laughs exactly like Seth Rogen

rayman

11:30 damn it really doesn't hit as much if yall don't remember such an important line for S1. Thors told him that when young Thorfinn went to get the knife from the chest: "You don't have any enemies." Thorfinn finally internalized that and believes it himself, becoming what Thors wanted him to be on his own.

Johnwick

Sorry but this anime is not peak to me lol . I get the character development but this aint the same vinland i started on S1 dragged that farmin bit way to much

L.C.

Shockzz1234

Difference between Takemichi and Thorfinn is two things - A. Thorfinn can actually fight back, he's doing it by choice, Takemichi wasn't lmao and B. Good writing. Just all round good writing, but the circumstances and context behind why Thorfinn is doing it and how he reached this conclusion is miles better than Takemichi's lol

Gucci Pucci
>>110169711

Everything is “not that deep” when u a lead brained mf who can’t think 2 thoughts back to back without having an aneurysm

MonarchXIII

I'm glad you guys get why this arc is peak. Quite a bit of people tend to completely miss the message of this arc and Vinland Saga as a whole. Vinland Saga was never about the violence and action. It's suppose to be an anti-violence/anti-war show. People who hate this arc were never real fans of the series to begin with.

Bradley Canning

This is probably my favourite episode from this season of VS

Aiscrim

I know this season is PEAK, but dude, i just read few chapters from season 3, Thorfinn is just the GOAT.

Joshua
>>110166181

Bruh for real. Me and my brother jumped out our chairs cause of how hyped that moment was. They was too busy cracking jokes and missed the peak

Philbo

this shit is getting so ridiculous every time anyone says that this arc is not good or anything of the sort, the the whole community resorts to two things "then go watch a shonen or something with more action" or "you are immature or go grow up" its annoying. like this arc in MY OPINION is a badly written arc. his development makes absolutely no sense. he believed had no reason to live understandably due to losing askeladd, but then ended up being a slave for idk what reason. his initial encounter with snake showed that he infact does want to live but didn't know why then he did absolutely nothing with that. when the people destroyed the crops that him and einar were growing. he didn't want to do anything about it, cried about throwing a single punch to someone that ruined the crops. swore off violence then 3 episodes later started fighting in a situation that had NOTHING to do with him for a man that just went on a killing spree. Then now he is not bothering fighting back when canute arrives (i dropped the show episodes ago i just saw glimpses of what happens). to me its like he took what his dad said too literal and has no idea what he meant about "you have no enemies" cause when his dad said that, he literally knocked out everyone in askladds group. then challenged askeladd to a duel with no intentions of killing. he gave thorfinn that dagger only to DEFEND himself. swearing off killing is completely understandable but swearing off violence to the point where you dont even want to do defend yourself or anything you work towards is fucking stupid and makes no sense.

Trist9n

The OST in the back when Thorfin was saying " we just met today ,you're not my enemy" omg the feels

wavyesper

Damn they didn’t even acknowledge the significance of Thorfinn being called a true warrior. Honestly one of the greatest moments ever in all of anime and manga

Shockzz1234

Kreative
>>110171388

Bruh, Thorfinn was raised by a bunch of killers since he was 6, he processes shit differently lol. I disagree that the writing is bad, I think it may have gone over your head (which could possibly be a sign of bad writing maybe??) (also not sure when you stopped watching but some of those questions have been answered).

Vicar Sol
>>110169976

That dude needs to learn "I have nor enemies" fr, seeing any comments being against him like a clown lmao.

Novafan
>>110169962

why tf are you even arguing up in here if you think its just a cartoon

Kreative
>>110170297

IDK about never being a fan of it. The pacing and direction of the show on the surface between S1 and S2 are really different. I can see why people who wanted action don't like the season. I think this season is a 10/10 so far though

Philbo
>>110171388

lol when did i say resort to violence was the solution?? all i said was swearing off killing is completely understandable but swearing off voilence to the point to where you dont want to DEFEND yourself or anything you working for is fucking stupid. meaning someone is ATTACKING YOU, but take that as you please. just gonna say not EVERY SINGLE situation is solved by talking lol and im commenting cause i dropped the episode about 2 or 3 episodes ago. and i can comment if i want. if you dont like it then just ignore me then lol just speaking my mind.

Novafan
>>110166377

just because something is animated does not mean it is always for children.

Alastair Murdock
>>110171388

Thorfinn became a slave because that was his punishment for attacking Canute. He felt he didn't want to live because he had absolutely no purpose in life, but he still retained his instincts as a warrior. Fox's attacks were superficial and posed no real threat, so he didn't respond, but subconsciously he knew Snake"s "attack" was a real threat, so his body responded. Snake said "Your body is saying it wants to live.". Thorfinn then slowly realizes that life is worth living, and he can change and grow. But he doesn't know what he wants to do yet. The final catalyst to his growth is the punch he threw, and the nightmare that he experienced after. He realizes that if he takes another life, he will sink back into the hell of being a warrior, and never be able to escape again. He swears off violence in an attempt to deal with that problem. After another year or two(an important aspect of the story. The following events occur, years later, not just a few days), Gardar shows up, and Thorfinn, decides to help the man, because he is important to Arnheid, who is his friend. He ends up defending him from Snake for that reason, and chooses to break his oath of non violence to do so, because he determines that he can't do the right thing by following that path. That isn't the path to becoming a true warrior. Thorfinn chooses not to fight back against the Thegns, because, as he said, it defeats the purpose of what he is doing. The dialogue in the manga makes it a little more clear. "Why would I beat a man, to negotiate for peace? How does that make sense?". He doesn't fight back, in this instance, because it doesn't make sense to. He doesn't need to. He found his first option, he found a better solution than death and violence. (Spoiler, although I suppose if you've dropped the show it doesn't matter, but Thorfinn DOES actually fight back later on in the story, much like Thors did.) The point is that he is still trying to figure out the whole "Being a True Warrior" thing. He doesn't know how to perfectly be a true warrior. Nobody does. Thors was the closest, but Thorfinn was only 6 when he died, he learned nothing from his father, except the few choice words he remembers. He has to figure it out. Thors himself, lamented that he wasn't a true warrior, because he still used a sword. There is actually an issue occurring in the Manga, right now, where it's starting to become questionable if Thorfinn is making the right choices. He is regularly, questioned by those around him. In the end, his friends listen to him, for the most part because they trust his judgement. But his judgement is beginning to be questioned by the narrative himself.

danial javady
>>110166377

Cartoon or not has nothing to do with the target audience. A cartoon may be correlated to a younger audience but that does not mutually exclude it from being targeted towards a more mature audience. This show used to be on the weekly shounen magazine but it isn't anymore. It's an art. Being an anime is just the medium. You can take your argument and reword it to say "It's just a movie it's not that deep, it's all fiction bro". Humans have vast imaginations. We like to subscribe to fantasy.

Pucki
>>110171388

damn i deleted my comment because i though my english was bad now i wish i would not have done that. In short thats the whole point of the show and being a "true warrior" because its harder to not to resort to violence and find a peacful way and since you dont understand that i will make it easier for you. I am defedning myself by coming to your house and killing you because you attacked me here in the comment therefore i was terryfied that you might come over and do this to me. And thats what i mean with its always easier to justify your violence instead of trying to always search for a peacful way. BTW i am not going to kill you wtf and i am sry if you felt threathen by that no harm done here :P but it still doesnt make sense that you comment here other than to argue with people so your sure you would not easily resort to violence?

Philbo
>>110171388

@Alastair Murdock thank you for that explanation, now that makes sense of everything that has happened. (also i know about what happens later as well, due to being spoiled by thumbnails and friends) regardless it really just comes down too i just dont like how it was written. then saying 22 episodes into the season how thorfinn became a slave is ridiculous. in my personal i just think this arc is just badly written TO ME. if everyone else believes its the best anime of the year or whatever then by all means lol

KeYo

i mean idk about every single episode. i enjoyed this show very much but like some episodes werent great and some were ok in my opinion but once it started heating back up then i couldnt wait for another episode tbh

Dontsop Keran
>>110171388

You fucking dumbass. I’m not even going to debunk your whole paragraph but specifically this episode he states how it makes no sense to use violence for peace. Him fighting back would’ve helped proved that he’s a member of the guard. But using VIOLENCE in order to negotiate PEACE doesn’t make sense. Go watch a shounen dipshit

Philbo
>>110171388

@pucki bro lol 1. your explain of defending yourself is bad lol. you initiating the violence because you are scared is not DEFENDING yourself. for example. if me and you were face to face and you got mad and took a knife to kill me or even threw a punch. im going to hit you back to DEFEND myself. doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to kill just means I'm going to escalate this situation to a point where you cant hurt me by knocking you out. 2. commenting on a post doesn't immediately mean i want to argue lol. just venting a little. just like my last reply to Alastair. i appreciated him explaining thoroughly everything regardless if i liked this arc or not.

Dontsop Keran
>>110171388

Just say you didn’t understand the writing and carry on other then saying it’s badly written. Cause objectively it’s not lmao

Greg Harrison

I'm happy ya'll are enjoying it, its so rewarding to see Thorfinn develop. We've basically seen him grow up from child to adult and now we're seeing him take a stand for something

Philbo
>>110171388

@dontstop Keran lol bro first off take a step back and take the large stick out your ass and calm down lol. now, i dont really care what was said as to why i dropped the show. i definitely understood the writing lol and TO ME its badly written. you can think its to greatest thing to ever be written in existence, it doesnt change my mind so relax and take all that hostility else were

MonarchXIII
>>110170297

Yeah maybe I'm being too harsh. I just don't understand how shonen andy's find this arc bad because of how different it is to season 1. The constrasting difference between S1 and S2 IS what elevates this to a near masterpiece of writing. S1 was already extremely good but it would absolutely not be as good of a show if it weren't for the change up in the story from S2 onwards.

Kumi Chan

Thats how the show makes me feel too. It’s frustrating as fuck when bad shit happens and Thorfinns just like “ i have no enemies” but he definitely is looking towards a larger goal, and it will be worth it

Pucki
>>110171388

okay then we go further i come to you and you kill me defending yourself and that already is wrong the right way would convince me that you would not try to kill me. Just saying like it is i would defend my home but i would never call someone stupid who always tries to find a peaceful solution because peace would be my justification for violence and calling someone peacful stupid in that sceanario would not make sense for me because thats in my opinion how everybody should be. And if you dont want to argue why are you posting your bad takes on vinland saga on a post thats called vinland saga forcing everybody to read it if they want it or not. If you would have asked some people if they wanted to talk to you about vinland saga no problem but you litterally posted on a post thats called vinland saga

Zzz
>>110171388

Im curious, if you’re unhappy with him swearing off violence completely, then wouldn’t you have been happy when thorfinn realized (through the askeladd scene) that it was a pretty naive way of thinking, and that he had to resort to a form of violence to protect arnheid and gardar? (This is putting aside your thoughts on whether he should have gotten involved with them or not)

Cleven Anthony
>>110171388

Don’t think about it too much. A lot of ppl see something they like and think everyone else has too as well. Some ppl love this anime the most I say hell paradise for me is way better tho I respect the path thorfinn is taking it’s not that insane it’s just a guy choosing not to fight and I know I don’t like animes like that cause I watched those before too. Your opinion is as valid as anyone’s

Mari

I now know not to go tell my opinion on Vinland Saga on Twitter even if it’s nothing bad 😭

Philbo
>>110171388

@Zzz no no no, im completely fine with him swearing off violence and killing by all means especially killing cause thats almost always avoidable But, my problem is taking to a point to where you wont even defend yourself or even standing up to someone that destroyed something you cared about. im not saying you need to immediately resort to fighting but if its beyond that point then knock said person out to deescalate the situation. if you can talk it out then sure thats always the first route to go but if thats not possible there is no need to turn yourself into a door mat just because you dont want to fight. i hope that made sense

The_Kombat_King

So what I love about this series is how the main theme is that violence is bad, while having the setting take places during the Viking era. It’s actually a genius form of story telling.

A1_MiLFshAkE
>>110171388

@Vicar Sol As soon as I read that line just knew to stop taking this dude seriously LOL

Ash

I LOVE how this anime is an actual Saga. The story telling is done so well. I still think about the teaser scene from the end of season 1 and wonder how the viewer will get to that point.

Champion Bescos

I love Vinland Saga. I mean, genuinely, it is now one of my favorite manga of all time and the anime adaptation is doing it incredible justice. It's a pretty damn near 10/10 for me in some parts. That being said, I do feel like anyone who criticises this season is just bombarded with some pretty infantile arguments. "Just go watch shōnen, you baby! This is for adults with real comprehensive abilities" is essentially what the majority of insults boil down to, and while I will admit that's not an entirely wrong argument in defence of the show (it IS a mature, nuanced work of fiction; a thoughtful slow-burn that many young, impatient viewers may dislike), it does come across as incredibly immature, close-minded, and off putting when those same argument are used against people with fairly acceptable critiques regarding character motivations, tonal consistency, or whatnot. I mean, people can take issue with the sudden shift in pacing from S1 or with Thorfinn's constant dilemma (even if that IS the purpose of the story, that he is blindly finding what it means to be a true warrior and its not some easy, straight path), and still think the show is good and admirable in its ambition. They should be talked to about why they may be wrong, not instantly shown the door. I liken it to Re:Zero (not that RZ is on the same level of VS, just as an example), where I love the material and its incredibly complex and polarising, but also rewarding for those who 'get it', yet I also acknowledge that a lot of its factors will keep it from being a popularly enjoyed series. It's not easily digestible stuff, and if I want more people to enjoy it, I need to have a proper discussion with them. Idk, I just feel like a show as mature and nuanced as VS deserves more mature and nuanced defenders/rebuttals. Art should impact us positively, not negatively.

>>110171388

I’m curious on your favorite anime or an any you thinks has “good writing”, please do share.

A. P.

Growing up in certain environments it's easy to start seeing everyone as a potential enemy that you might have to resort to violence with at some point because it's simpler to crash out than talk things out, but Thors saying "No one has any enemies" to Thorfinn before he died truly stuck with me and created a revelatory moment for me. This show is so peak it makes you want to be a better person and shit lol and seeing Thorfinn run it back and finally understand his father's dying words T.T Just beautiful.

Philbo
>>110171388

@Lucky Licks just FYI i just dont like this arc, season 1 was amazing but, to answer your question; Attack on Titan is my favorite anime, Code Geass is up there as well, Death Note is great, Evangelion is up there as well

Lol it wasn’t 22 s tier episodes in the beginning it was good but not a S tier but this anime was really good I also don’t think Canute is a awesome in my eyes he’s much worse than ketil considering everything he’s done is his wake including poisoning his own brother he’s just planting seeds of hatred to achieve his goals without considering what will happen after his death also this whole revenge against God theory is clown smoke also if you don’t believe in God then don’t @ me of course yours views will be different

Hans Wurst

I think Einar being at the meeting is actually important. There had to be someone to give a voice to the victims of Canute's actions. Thorfinn wasn't it, as he was part of the vikings and in the past he said, that he doesn't have the right to complain when he did the same evil deeds. But Einar is innocent so he can speak some harsh truth to Canute.

Arc

Sheera kinda remembered it. Back when Thorfinn first reached for the knife, his dad said "You don't have any enemies!"

I swear I never see anyone mention the fact that Thors, Canute and now Thorfinn all have the same look in their eyes. It was mentioned by Thorkell when he tested Canute's resolve, and how Thorfinn has found his.

A episode that comes to together completely like animation with plot and leaves me on the edge of my seat wanting more while all episodes were good in my opinion but all episodes weren’t leaving me on the edge of my seat going damn the next week needs to hurry up and get here keep in my this is completely opinionated I don’t expect everyone to share the same view

Cliptastic
>>110189269

That doesn’t make him less of a great man. He has accomplished and enough and has enough ambition to be considered a great man

Patrone07
>>110189269

It’s depends on what your definition of great man means People considered Hitler a Great man do u agree ?

Brawler

Hope they get to watching The Last Kingdom one day.

Jayden Holder
>>110189269

But Canute has the resolve to make level headed decisions and the mindset to do these things

Jayden Holder
>>110189269

Btw it's not S tier in ur opinion but in the view of majority of the community it is, our opinion

Patrone07
>>110189269

If that’s true then it what it is but I never heard or seen most of the community say so have you ? And you call leveled headed decisions murdering anyone who gets in your way or setting them up so you can steal their farm, Most criminals around the world can make the same type of decisions and aren’t seeing and talking to a dead head which was their fathers from time to time lol Would Thor, Thorfin’s father say Canute is a great man ?

Godrick

When Thorfinn first touched a blade Thors grabbed it and asked him, "that's a tool for killing, why do you need it?" Thorfinn told him "To kill" Thors asked "Who do you intend to kill" Thorfinn replied, "My enemys" and Thors knelt down and told him, "You don't have any enemies. Nobody does. There's no one in this world who it's okay to hurt"

Brawler
>>110249649

Yeah, it was a rushed mess. I'd be okay if they skipped the movie since the series already has a good stopping point.

ok
>>110166181

yeah i think if you don't remember s1, it's hard to remember just how profound thors' influence was on thorfinn. through it all, his entire character arc concludes in the realization of his father's ultimate message re: having no enemies. this is ALL the foundation provided explicitly by thors. it's why when people disregard the importance of thors and attach it completely to askelad, i have such an issue with it.

ok
>>110249649

i love last kingdom so much but i want them to watch vikings first just because of ragnar.

ok

Earlier in the reactions a lot of people came at Roshi for his understanding of the relationship between Askelad and Thorfinn. One of the reasons for that is because its chafacterization seemed to supersede the relationship between Thors (as his actual* dad) and Thorfinn. Well, that matters because Thorfinn's ENTIRE basis for growth hinges on the realization of the "I have no enemies" ideal. This comes directly from Thors! Askelad was incredibly important to Thorfinn's development - but the essence is and always has been Thors.

Patrick
>>110846561

if you don't like it you could always ya know, not watch the show?

BigSaberBro

Turned from Gigachad to Gay in one season, aint no way boy.

accepting that askeladd became a father figure to him doesn't undermine thors' influence on thorfinn whatsoever. thors' existence in thorfinn's life and the mentalities he instilled in thorfinn from a young age are what help him hold on to his humanity; but its undeniable that thorfinn is who he has become specifically because askeladd became something more to him than his father's killer. the nature of thorfinn and askeladd's relationship was and always will be complex. thorfinn observed him, learned from him, emulated him, protected him, got angry for him in all the same ways he would have his own father, and for even longer than he was able to for Thors, even while he claimed to only stick around to kill him. even the author himself has said that askeladd took on that sort of image for thorfinn. roshi and gang recognized it for what it was and said he was a second father to thorfinn. they never denied thors' influence, nor does saying that indirectly deny thors' influence. in the same way one's own development can be shaped by their father, step-father, uncle, grandpa, older brother, etc simultaneously, the same can be said here with recognition that both played a major part in his current ideology.

I agree, in reality the world gives no fucks and will kill you just for existing, doesn't matter if you are feeding the homeless, a mother, or jesus himself. If you want to survive you gotta kill the mfr that is trying to kill you
