Sometimes you really do have to go the extra mile to support someone through prostate recovery. Helping them feel more comfortable and less embarrassed makes a difference.

Urinary incontinence after prostatectomy often comes with shame. It’s tough to feel sexy when you’re leaking urine.

In this session, I set us up with incontinence pads (which my patient lovingly called “puppy pee pads”) and we got to work. We used a urinary cuff while doing pelvic floor training with functional tasks—breathing, sitting, coughing, sit-to-stand, squats, single leg balance, and heel bouncing. And yes, a few drops of pee did happen, but we were prepared!

Pelvic floor muscles need to activate during real-life stuff, especially when there are shifts in intra-abdominal pressure. Training them this way matters.

Lordy, lordy, lordy... I really feel for men who've been through surgery for prostate cancer. Just so much to deal with including the incontinence.

I'm fortunate not to have to deal with prostatecomy issues. But I do have to deal with whatever issues are causing my dribbling after urination. More than half the time I have to pee, I don't just get a little dribbling. It's almost like a whole new stream, but only one little surge. My PFPT has been working with me for 7 weeks now. She's told me that if by next week, the issue hasn't shown improvement, she wants to refer me to ba urologist for a 2nd opinion. My first visit to a urologist included a super duper fun cystoscopy. That doctor told me that yes, my prostate is enlarged, but not abnormally large for my age (60). He told me that, viewing with the cystoscope, he saw no restriction of the urethral tone, or whatever it is that the prostate rests against. I'm at my wits end. My PFPT also told me that "We're not at that point yet," when I asked if I should consider getting off the Cialis and see if our work has created an improvement in my ability to maintain a strong erection. Not sure when we might be "at that point" but I'm hoping we get there, soon!
