Jessie tapped her heel impatiently against the sleek floor of the Team Rocket breakroom. Across the room, a handsome new recruit was holding court. He had just joined the organization and already had an air of cool confidence that Jessie immediately gravitated toward. For the past week, she had tried striking dramatic poses, tossing her massive, gravity-defying magenta hair, and bragging loudly about her villainous exploits.

Nothing worked. He barely glanced her way.

Narrowing her eyes, Jessie observed him closely. He was currently laughing at a joke made by a female grunt with a sporty pixie cut. Yesterday, he had been buying coffee for an admin with a sharp, chin-length style. Suddenly, it clicked. Jessie gasped, her hands flying to her own sweeping, voluminous locks.

He only pays attention to girls with short hair! The realization hit her like a Thunderbolt. If she wanted to be the star of his attention, her signature look had to go.

An hour later, Jessie was standing inside a high-end Celadon City salon. She took a deep breath and threw herself into the plush leather chair. The salon owner, a stylish young woman with a warm smile, stepped up behind her.

"Welcome! What can we do for you today?" the owner asked.

Jessie looked at her reflection. A wave of hesitation washed over her. Her hair was her pride, her trademark, her shield. She bit her lip, almost ready to stand up and run. But then she pictured the new recruit ignoring her again. Her eyes hardened with determination.

"I want a short haircut," Jessie commanded, gripping the armrests. "Make it stand out."

"Are you absolutely sure, darling? This is quite the length," the young woman asked, holding up the heavy, stiff magenta swoop. "We'll need to wash it first to get all this styling product out."

"Just do it before I change my mind!"

The owner gently guided Jessie to the washbasin. Warm water and fragrant shampoo worked their magic. Jessie's iconic, gravity-defying hair was thoroughly soaked. Deprived of its usual heavy hairspray and gel, the massive shape finally collapsed. For the first time in years, her magenta hair fell completely flat, hanging straight and heavy down her back like a wet blanket.

Guiding her back to the main chair, the stylist combed the long, wet hair straight down. She picked up her shears. Snip. Jessie squeezed her eyes shut as she heard the thick crunch of the scissors. Heavy, wet clumps of magenta fell to the floor, sliding off the cape. When Jessie opened her eyes, her long hair was gone. The stylist had cut it straight across, leaving it resting exactly at shoulder length.

"No, it's not enough," Jessie said, leaning forward. "He wouldn't even turn his head for this. Go shorter."

The salon owner nodded, her scissors moving with a faster, more practiced rhythm. The shoulder-length hair was swiftly cropped up to her jawline, framing her face in a sleek, sharp bob.

Jessie tilted her head. The bob was chic and sophisticated. But she was Jessie of Team Rocket; she needed something with an edge.

"Give me an undercut," Jessie instructed, a wicked smile creeping onto her face.

The salon owner’s eyes lit up. "Excellent choice."

The soft snip of scissors was replaced by the mechanical hum of hair clippers. The stylist lifted the back section of Jessie's wet bob, pressing the buzzing clippers right against the nape of her neck. Jessie shivered at the unfamiliar, cool vibration as the clippers smoothly shaved away the lower half of her hair, creating a tight, neat undercut hidden beneath the sharp edge of the bob.

After a quick blow-dry to style the remaining hair, the cape was removed. Jessie stood up. She ran her fingers through the sleek bob, feeling the cool, bristly texture of the buzzed undercut at the back of her head. She looked fierce, modern, and completely transformed.

Later that afternoon, the doors of Team Rocket HQ slid open. Jessie strode in, her head held high, the sharp lines of her new undercut bob catching the harsh fluorescent lights.

The room went quiet, but more importantly, the new recruit stopped mid-sentence. He turned around, his eyes going wide as he took in her edgy new style. A genuine, impressed smile spread across his face, and he immediately abandoned the group he was talking to, walking straight toward her.

"Wow," the recruit said, leaning against the table near her. "I don't think we've been properly introduced. I love the hair."

Jessie smirked, crossing her arms and tossing her newly shortened locks. The sacrifice had been absolutely worth it.
