Which one do you like more? Since you told me that in the first one she looked traumatized, I changed it to a smile.

For me it depends on what you wish for Ruby to be theoretically reacting to. She's looked and is traumatised by much of what occurs within canon in the different iterations of the show. Is it meant to be early show era Ruby in which case traumatised is a very apt descriptor. Is it later show Ruby in which a deeply traumatised look may be more applicable. Is it during the Ever After in which case absolutely vacant and distraught can be very much the order of the day.

I like Ruby smiling, generally, because for me she's a survivor and someone whom overcomes great adversity. However that doesn't mean she isn't harrowed and hurt by what she experienced along the way. Her nature is strongly "you think you had me there, you thought you got me *quirks a smile* but you were wrong. I persevere. I thrive. And you ain't seen nothing yet Sunshine!" Although, in the smiling art it still feels a little too blank and vacant? I think, for me, it depends on why she's drawn her sword to fight. Has she drawn it in surprise and shock? Or has she drawn it because she relishes the fight? If it is the first one then image one is much closer to that for me. As harrowing as it is. Although a rounder oh expression puckered mouth does convey that too. I really do like image one. But if it is I am going to win and show my will to survive then a small upturned grin with a cheek crease and fold and a bery very very small amount of colour to the cheeks and a slight softening of the eyes would convey that better. If you want her to be using her silver eyes powers and be afraid and genuinely in fear for her life then change nothing and go for image one. If you want valiant Ruby modify image two. If you want an oh no... Here we go Ruby that looks different again. If she's spooked and like a 'deer caught in the headlights' then image one works well for that. If she's relishing the fight to come then that ain't it. If she's traumatised, wishing she didn't have to fight and having to anyways then a small weary smile like in image 2 is much closer to what you've drawn in image 2. It all depends on context and the emotion you wish for us to imagine she has. Image 1 works depending on context but she looks absolutely harrowed and deeply traumatised. Image 2 is an improvement if you don't want a harrowed Ruby. I like 2 and i like 1. Image 1 was just really hard to see because she's usually quite upbeat even when she's sad. I don't like it when Ruby's spirit is broken as it is as several points in canon in the show. But I enjoy those moments and the important story they tell in context. Of someone fluid, uncertain and changing, like all of us. It's because it's a static image without context it makes it harder to judge which to prefer, for me. I know that's probably both helpful and deeply unhelpful so I'm sorry for the comment! 😅 You've got this. Keep up the excellent work! ☺️
