Eugene was just jealous and upset that Dongmae could read korean and he didn't. I love how Dongmae's character is being acted out by the actor. I guess he suits cold characters cause he was great in When the phone rings too.

Great reaction. That last sequence, with the sheets hanging and the three of them talking and contemplating their interest for Ae-sin is epic.

The joke about the two men being compared as brothers keeps coming up because they actually do look a lot alike—it’s become a running gag in the story. Also, when Eugene says "he knows how to read Korean" about Dongmae, it's more than just a casual remark. Both Eugene and Dongmae were born into the lowest class—Eugene as a slave and Dongmae as the son of a butcher. In that era of Korea, people from such backgrounds weren’t allowed to learn to read or write, so Eugene’s shock (and maybe a bit of envy) makes sense. It’s a powerful moment showing how unusual and impressive it is that Dongmae learned to read. And just to mention a scene from earlier episodes—when Dongmae grabs Ae-sin’s dress and says “this was my only way of getting to you,” it carries a lot of meaning. Because Ae-sin is from the upper class, someone like Dongmae, who was born low-class, wouldn’t have even been allowed to speak to her without permission. After she saved him and told him to live, he became a yakuza—a group feared and respected enough to bypass social barriers. That was his way of gaining the power to stand on equal ground and finally speak to her directly.

The reason she didn't know about "love" is because the girl from the school said "love" in English which is "lovue(러브)" with a thick Korean accent. That's why Aeshin didn't know that "lovue" is "사랑(love in Korean)". So she just assumed that "love" is something very difficult and dangerous. It was all a miscommunication between English and Korean language.
