It was supposed to be 16 eps but MBC cut it down to 12 eps-- so I guess that's why some plot points seem undercooked. But I really enjoyed the romance between the two leads. I haven't watched a kdrama since Tangerines last year but this brought me back. So excited for the next IU Kdrama, but that probably wouldn't be for another 2 years or more :)

I really enjoyed the drama. I do think Jin Mu got caught and jailed in 0.2 seconds 😭. And I do think I-AN becoming King and then abolishing the monarchy was rushed. Also agree that I wanted more from the convo with her dad. However, they wrapped up extremely well for a 12-episode drama. Much better than When the Phone Rings's last episode‼️Btw Perfect Crown was confirmed to have been written as a 16-episode drama btw Lee. There were supposed to be way more Royal Academy scenes (writer released a web novel with them and it's pretty good).

All the reasons why I LOVE the character of our Prince 1. The “Invisible Prince” Archetype Prince Ian is written as a classic second-son royal tragedy. He has the bloodline, intelligence, and public admiration to rule, but structurally he exists in the shadow of the throne. That tension defines everything about him: he is powerful in theory, powerless in practice. This creates his central contradiction: He is the most capable person in the palace, yet the least free. Unlike more typical royal drama leads who actively chase power, Ian begins by suppressing ambition. His restraint is what makes him compelling. His motives for wanting power are pure and he is NOT corrupted in the process. 2. Emotional Repression as Survival One of Ian’s strongest traits is emotional control. Throughout the drama, he rarely reacts impulsively. His calm exterior isn’t coldness — it’s learned self-preservation. Growing up inside the monarchy taught him that: vulnerability is dangerous desire creates weakness visibility invites political attack So his silence becomes armour. A lot of viewers initially read him as detached, but as the episodes go on it reveals that he feels deeply — he simply cannot afford visible emotion. 3. Gentle Strength vs Traditional Royal Masculinity What makes Ian a great male lead is that he isn’t defined by dominance. He’s thoughtful, empathetic, and morally hesitant. That’s deliberate. He feels the weight of his responsibility but is able to act when needed after great deliberation. The show sets him up with every reason to become: bitter power-hungry manipulative …but he resists. His gentleness/ empathy is framed as strength rather than weakness. Even when he moves toward political action, it comes from protection rather than conquest. That makes him less of a “kingmaker” archetype and more of a reluctant reformer. 4. His Relationship with Hui-ju His dynamic with IU’s character works because they are narrative opposites. Hui-ju lacks royal legitimacy but has agency. Ian has legitimacy but lacks freedom. They each possess what the other lacks. Hui-ju pushes outward — strategic, bold, not afraid of confrontation. Ian pulls inward — reflective, cautious, restrained. Their relationship forces Ian to confront his passivity. She doesn’t “fix” him; she destabilizes the emotional system he built to survive. Through her, he begins choosing rather than merely enduring. 5. The Core Theme: Duty vs Freedom Ian represents the drama’s biggest thematic question: Can a good person survive inside a corrupt institution without becoming corrupted by it? i personally think he resists the corruption. His arc suggests the answer is complicated. He’s constantly torn between: accepting royal duty protecting those he loves escaping the institution entirely That internal conflict makes him more layered. He isn’t trying to win the crown. He’s trying to decide whether the crown is worth saving at all. Prince Ian resonates because he subverts expectations. Instead of a charismatic, aggressive royal hero, he’s written as: emotionally burdened quietly intelligent deeply compassionate haunted by inherited responsibility He’s compelling precisely because his conflict is internal. In the end he displayed a courage / level of bravery that i think very few Royal princes would I LOVE HIM SO MUCCH AS A CHARACTER - THANK YOU PERFECT CROWN

my review - I have been an avid watcher of K-dramas since 2004. Throughout this time, I’ve had phases where I’ve been in a slump and not watching them at all, and others where I’ve been fully obsessed. Each time, there was always one drama that reeled me back in. For 2026, Perfect Crown was that drama. It reconnected me with a part of my past self that used to love K-dramas – the characters, the worlds they built, the romance, the sheer creativity and ingenuity of their ideas. Perfect Crown has its faults. Having consumed the number of K-dramas that I have, you learn that the dramas that stay with you are rarely the perfect ones. They are the imperfect ones – that imprint on your thoughts. You will always remember how they made you feel after each episode and at the end. I have not enjoyed a show quite like this in such a LONG time. It could have been improved. A longer episode run to tie up loose ends and more world-building – setting up the rules of their world more clearly – would have allowed me, as the audience, to linger longer in the more intense moments and become even more immersed in their romance. Any criticism in this regard lies firmly with the writer and director, and with the decision at MBC to make this a 12-episode series. The show gives viewers much to think about: the role of constitutional monarchy; the burden it places on human beings in exchange for its privileges. The drama subverts our gender expectations without sacrificing the hero’s masculinity; and it makes us think about what it means to break away from systems and institutions so deeply ingrained in our everyday lives – if only we had the courage to do it. The characters of Ian and Huiju were excellent additions to the K-drama world. Both IU and BWS did an exceptional job bringing them to life. I’ve made a previous post explaining why Prince Ian remains my favourite character. Despite keeping their plans for addressing the marriage contract leak secret from each other out of protection and care, they communicated well throughout the series and consistently showed a level of consideration toward one another that was genuinely refreshing to see. The soundtrack , costumes, and cinematography are worthy of awards. A happy ending was thoroughly deserved – and achieved. I will watch this drama again and again, and it is a great addition to my K-drama lexicon.

I loved the drama, I do wish that they did the 16 episodes instead of 12, 12 always seems so short for me. Also, it seems that every time Byeon Wooseok plays a character he’ll always struggle with the proposal lmao

I really loved this drama, probably my fav for 2026 so far, actually since Dear x just wish it was longer And your reactions made it even better ❣️
