1:12:50 Regarding the logic vs emotional end discussion, I'm someone EXTREMELY emotional. Even I can't explain Hae Su. You are all correct, she makes no sense. If I'm IU, I'm pretending this drama never happened LOL

RENISNOTOK

Isn’t she a noble as well like did they forget that lol

Mellmell

I dont even know what to think right now. My baby girl Hae Su, what you doing?! Why are you doing this? 😩 Im sorry Im waving the death flags for my girl Hae Su right now, she's got a heart condition, theres so much stress, she's making questionable decisions, either the heart gonna take her out or someone is gonna sneak her cause aint no way we're getting a happy ending. She's gonna break poor 4th princes' heart 💔 and end up putting everyone else in coffins as collateral damage for this decision. Im preparing my heart for the next two episodes. Scarlet Heart, a journey to everyone's doom in the pursuit of love, power, happiness, andwhatever else. Hae Su is a tragic and catalyst for this whole messy situation.

geewonie

she's very critical of the 4th prince but clearly biased towards other princes. Knowing that the 4th prince will forgive her disobedience 🙄

R

I understand that you guys are biased toward Wang So, so it makes sense why you always support in everything he does. But i think maybe you should try to put yourselves in Hae Soo's shoes once to look at things from her perspective and understand how she feels? There are many traumatic things happened directly or indirectly to her in this episode, so i'll list them one by one: 1. She cannot get married to So. Despite both of them loving each other very much, she had to give up her own marriage because she didn't have a strong family to support the king if she were an empress and worried that he might get "attacked" by other nobles if she kept getting stubborn. From this one alone, we can tell how depressed she was and that greatly affected her mentality, especially considering she had been having heart conditions. 2. She saw Jeong not having any knowledge about his mother about to die and decided to tell him about it. Okay, I understand that he was exiled and he could not come into the palace, but his only mother was literally bedridden, about to die, and he was not allowed to say goodbye to her. If you guys saw this situation in real life, would you really turn away from this? Now, I get that that woman never gave So any love, but that is the situation between only them. Why did Jeong have to suffer from it? Why couldn't he see his mother for one last time before she died? I hate Jeong in every other thing he does but this has to be a separate issue. If I were Hae Soo, I would tell him the news about his dying mother too regardless the love for So because that was just too cruel to witness and did nothing about it. 3. She was furious about Chae Ryeong being beaten to death. I admit that she was wrong to keep saying that her only fault was being born as a slave and being in love even after knowing everything she did. But I sympathize with her and I think she's just in denial. She went from giving up her own marriage, to witnessing the Empress Yoo's death and Jeong's suffering, then the girl who she thought was her friend all along to be beaten to death. One thing after another kept bottling up inside her, so it's no surprise it reached her limits and made her "explode". I do see that she stopped blaming So after hearing he explained everything, but it's understandable she kept being in denial about Chae Ryeong's evil actions. It's just a way to cope with pain and stress. And i completely understand if she believes she cannot take any of this anymore and wants to leave the palace. This place just keeps making her poor heart become weaker over time. So, that's my opinion. She's annoying, but I don't think she deserves to be criticized that much when So has done some questionable things here and there too and always get a pass for it

Serko

She is a 304 and for the streets lol always begging, defending and secretly meeting with ALL the princes. Wang So drank poison from her, took an arrow for her and she still doesn't trust him. She is not good enough for him and it's not even close lol You know somethings wrong with a female MC when all three of them take the male MCs side instead of simping haha

Serko

She is for the streets lol always secretly meeting and beggimg for ALL the princes but not trusting her man haha

YaBoyRockLee Reactions

In either episode 18 or episode 19 Adorkable mentions that talking points but yea. I get it. I read what you have to say thanks for sharing.

R

"for the streets", "meeting with all the princes", i'm not going to discuss this any further with you if what you're only viewing her is nothing more than a whore. And all 3 of them take the male lead's side because they already favor him since the first episode when they didn't even have enough context about him, especially Adorkable when she's already had a crush on the actor since Flower of Evil

Serko

like I care if you agree lol she became a whore the moment she lusted after her sick cousins husband the 8th prince haha who does that? especially after her boyfriend cheated on her, she should be the last person that does that to another woman, but sure defend her simp

Afra Lambourdiere

To me Hae Su is not inconsistent or dumb or unlogical. By this point Hae Su still regards Jeong as a friend. He hasn't done anything to her (or to So for that matter). If my friend's mother was dying I would let them know, So was wrong and extremely petty for that. I understand his point of view but that doesn't make it right. Hae Su regarded Chae Ryeong as a little sister and So didn't explain beforehand (which according to Baek Ha he could've) He just beat her little sister to death. Hae Su almost got beat to death as well by the way, and that is a direct cause of her declining health. Her character consistently voiced dislike for torture/bodily punishments. The first time So defended her it was from bodily punishment. I understand why So doesn't feel bad since Chae Ryeong is the variable that allowed the death of two of his brothers, I don't hold Chae Ryeong in my heart neither, but even if Hae Su does feel betrayed by her, she's still not wrong : the real responsible isn't Chae Ryeong, it's the 9th and 8th princes that plotted and took advantage of a child slave — weirdly only one prince was exiled and it was neither of the two actually responsible. By the way Baek ha's girl is also a traitor that spied on them and relayed info to Yo, if she were to die beaten to death I am pretty sure we would understand Beak Ha or Hae Su feeling some type of way about it. Hae Su is isolated, she got So on that throne, then she had to let go of the power of empress so he could keep it and now she sees him wield that power in ways that directly arms her. He kills, and exile the people she cares about, marries another woman and essentially locks her in a gilded cage (Same as Head Court Lady Ho) Baek Ha and Ji Mong are not her people they'll pick So 100 times over her. She doesn't want to impact or be impacted by the palace anymore so she is opting out. She can't prioritize her people and she can't support the cruelty necessary from a king, she has the opportunity to leave so she takes it. I don't understand what else people expect from the character honestly. She holds no power (never did), she got reincarnated in the body of a random girl unlike Ji-mong who is an astrologer and holds power. So what can she actually do that she isn't doing?

R

omg all of this!! i finally found someone who doesn't criticize her actions harshly. the whole comment section leaves me dumbfounded. they all talked like she committed a heinous crime

Afra Lambourdiere

I swear I've been holding off on commenting for a while but I couldn't let this one go 😭. People calling her dumb when she's just a normal girl is getting to me, and people calling her character unlogical because she doesn't trust So is even worse. I'm thinking yall should go back in time and fall in love with Hitler and try not to hold a minimum of distrust in the guy. Oh and you've been told by a fellow time traveler (that understands the rules better than you but won't share them) that nothing you do can actually change shit and that you should just witness the genocides in silence. Oh and also you keep having visions of Hitler killing every person that you consider friends and family. Like literaly ANYONE (with low knowledge of history or not) would be moving like she does, nobody would know how to stop the fucking genocide, any wrong move can get you killed or wait for it : tortured to death. So is remembered in history as a violent king who killed anyone and everyone, she put him on that throne because SHE TRUSTS HIM, and the first thing he does (even thought he has to do it) is to let go of her and kill her closest friends...

Afra Lambourdiere

Her family lost the power they held way back when she refused to marry the founding father... So she was noble, but now she's a mere court lady, who has no political power nor does she care about it

R

well said honestly! i completely agree with you. i think the problem is they've already favored So since the first episode and it's no doubt that bias can cloud their judgements. Every questionable thing So has done in this show all get a pass from them while they keep nitpicking, criticizing, and facepalming with even the smallest things that Hae Soo does. Like nothing can satisfy them atp

Afra Lambourdiere

I think it also has to do with the fact that Hae su doesn't have a big range of action. She's a powerless character and so when the few choices that she can make are wrong (my girl is not totally blameless) it looks really bad next to a So that can afford to make waves and big gestures... And because So's questionable actions are never to arm Hae Su but personal vendettas (that are understandable) it gets pushed under the rug. Meanwhile her positive actions get invisibilized because their not big or loud. The drama is made in a way that makes it so ngl. Had Go Ah Jin (Hae Su in the modern times) been an Historian Major or something that linked her directly to the time period she ended up in, her character would hold much more agency, her motivations would be clearer and thus more understandable... I don't blame them for not being satisfied with her I just get frustrated seeing them have the same expectations for characters that don't stand on equal grounds at all.

YaBoyRockLee Reactions

I also understand. Sorry I let you down. I can make some changes and hold back on the final episode to make sure you guys are satisfied. I hope honest reactions are generally what people want and it helps you understand what shows/characters we gravitate towards and you can recommend accordingly. Sorry again.

R

yeah, i guess the patriarchy is just too strong in this show that makes viewers praise everything the men do, but when it is a woman, like no, let's all blame her 🫤

R

you don't have to apologize. i get that different people have different opinions when watching a show. i just hope if possible, you guys could refrain from criticizing Hae Soo character that much and maybe try to understand her point of view a bit more

Mag

I don't get the criticism towards Soo. I LOVE So, but I've always seen him as a morally gray character, to say the least. From the very first episode, I got the impression that he absolutely wanted to take the throne. Plus, he comes across as quite insincere. For instance, do you remember his conversation with the general in episode 7? The general clearly tells him that he could easily dominate the clan in Shinju, yet So spent all the previous episodes crying about being a defenseless hostage there. Does he look like a hostage when he rides into the capital in the first episode? Not at all. That's why I felt from the start that he was playing a game. Besides, Soo experienced his aggressiveness firsthand. How many times did he choke her, push her, and threaten her with death in the early episodes? I can't blame Soo for having had enough. She expected them to be happy together, but from day one of gaining power, So immediately forbids her from contacting anyone without his permission. He treats her like a doll that is supposed to wait for him, love him unconditionally, and never question any of his decisions. On top of that, he quickly eliminates her friends. He could have warned her that he was going to kill Chae Ryeong, or he could have taken her out of the palace so she wouldn't have to watch it. He could have considered her feelings, but he didn't, because as a rule, he always focuses only on his own emotions. In my opinion, he is a fascinating character, but I would never in a million years call him a good guy.

fear

while i agree Hae So is getting unwarranted hate, Wang So being called Hitler is also way too extreme. Wang So basically got pushed into this position too. He wanted to leave the palace with Hae So originally but everyone around him kept plotting against him and framing him for stuff he never did. If those people trusted him from the start none of his retaliation would have happened.

YaBoyRockLee Reactions

I could indeed do that. It will no longer be a natural reaction. That be us changing our nature to please viewers and essentially a less raw reaction And closer to something fake and or, we will think it but just not say it? So you get silence. The good thing is that would become a shorter video I’d have less to say Haha.

Afra Lambourdiere

I am not saying Wang So, the character that we get to know and love is like Hitler, I am saying History remembers him as such as far as Hae Soo is concerned. So distancing the Wang So that she knows and the Gwang Joong she learned about in history books (which would be an equivalent of Hitler) is something difficult. The mistrust she perpetually holds of him is because he is remembered as a barbaric tyrant. Her knowledge of Gwang Joong precedes her knowledge of So and because we as an audience have only ever known So, it doesn't translate to us like it does to Hae Soo I feel like the example is totally appropriate to the point I was trying to make.

Serko

I get the point you're trying to make about Hae Soo's modern perspective, but the Hitler comparison is still just fundamentally wild and historically inaccurate. Even in actual history books, Gwangjong isn't remembered as some genocidal maniac. If anything, history looks back at him more like an ancient Abraham Lincoln. He was dealing with a kingdom that was being torn apart by a corrupt, slave-holding elite who basically acted like mob bosses with private armies. He didn't commit atrocities out of some hateful ideology; he used his power to break up a extremely dangerous oligarchy. For the 10th century, he was actually radically progressive. He literally freed unjustly held slaves, started hiring government officials based on their actual intelligence rather than their rich bloodlines, and even set up public welfare for the poor. He was definitely ruthless and purged his rivals, but he was a pragmatic visionary who did the dirty work necessary to stabilize a fractured nation. Comparing him to Hitler is just a massive stretch and honestly laughable, even if it's just to justify Hae Soo's fear of him. In reality, the 3th prince himself appointed Wang So as his successor before he died, even over his own son at the time. So even the, for the story sake, embellished "evil" 3th prince, viewed Wang So as a more competent ruler than his own son I guess Hae Soo didn't really pay attention in history class lol if anything his (fictional) title of "Blood Monarch" in the show, is because he was ruthless towards all the entitled nobles of powerful families and even his own, who tried everything to keep their power, slaves and positions.

fear

I understand that it would be hard for Hae Soo to differentiate her modern history knowledge written and her first hand experience with Wang So, but because of that first hand experience she should realize that after I don't know how many years of being in the past that Wang So isn't that person. From beginning to end she believed what other people told her about him instead of listening and understanding what Wang So says/went through. She literally believed actual traitors like the 8th prince and was swayed by the words of the 3rd prince at the end. I am not saying it is easy to deny how history was written but, she literally has lived in the world where it happened. It should be clear to her that Wang So wasn't the kind of person the history books wrote and she should know by episode 18 and 5+ yrs. I use the phrase "Her history knowledge" very specifically because it's clear she didn't know the whole story.

Serko

Oh no, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear enough. I didn't meant to argue with you but I think there is some misunderstanding with what I said. It's not that she doesn't know the whole story or that she was taught a warped "rewritten" history in school. The real issue I was trying to point out (which is actually more the show writers fault and not even the character of Hae Soo lol) is that She doesn't even know the actual history of Gwangjon that is written and taught in Korea in real life today. All I stated above are facts that should be known to her if she paid attention in class, and you can check online for all the laws and emancipation acts for slaves and meritocracy based hiring reforms instead of noble bloodlines etc. he passed, against great backlash from all the powerful noble families of course. Like relief funds for the poor and freed captured slaves after wars, so much so that he even had problems with the economy at times, because he would try to support the commoners instead of the wealthy and powerful nobles. The only reason he is seen as ruthless, is because he crushed people like the 8th prince and schemers like all these corrput government eunuchs and administratos. Out of 3500 of these powerful nobles that were there pressuring King Taejo, Wang So's father, for power and compromise through marriage all the time, there where only 76 left after Wang So purged them all (not really people most modern folks would shed a tear for lol). I would have hoped that someone from modern times, who hates oppression or discrimination because of low birth, scars, status, would actually really admire a progressive Emperor that was way ahead of his time and ruled like a Korean Version of Abraham Lincoln. Looking out for the poor and common folk, instead of keeping the status quo and always resolve the noble families greed and ambitions by marrying some new girl out of these families every time there was internal strife like his father. But I guess the writers needed a fictional plot device like fake written history that Hae Soo learned, to make it seem as though she was wrong about her history/perception of Gwangjon and cringely doubt everything the really progressive king does and rather believe snakes like the 8th (who is fictional too I think btw).

Afra Lambourdiere

I am not sure you've seen the full show so I'll come back to that when the finale is updated, but if you pay attention to the show you'll understand the continuity and why the choice of comparison isn't that much of a stretch at all

Afra Lambourdiere

Like I said to the other user, It's really not a lack of knowledge on Hae Soo's part and the last ep should clear that up. I am defending her lack of trust because I understand it, not because I agree with it. To me it's just an "easy to say, less easy to do" type of thing. The Hitler comparison seems wild to you but the fact that it is wild is the point. It is not so easily dismissed when I put you in a situation with a historical figure that you know as dictator of terror... My first comment was mostly a take on Hae Soo's side of the story because not agreeing with some of her choices doesn't mean she's dumb for making them (she's extremely consistent btw). Plus honestly it's no longer an issue of trust (to me the last true show of distrust from her was the 10th prince's death and she was tortured with the visions for that) it's an issue of safety. She put him on the throne because she trusts him, and she let go of the title of empress because she trusts him. Her telling the Jeong about his mother had nothing to do with her "mistrust" of So and more to do with her care for Jeong, her being distressed of her "little sister" dying had nothing to do with mistrust it was simply grief. Both actions were mishandled by So (or even wrong ngl) and I simply don't see why she should stay or do whatever is the expectation that you had for her actions. She's dying anyway, she cannot stand the hard decisions he has to make and he doesn't share his decision making either. Her opinion don't matter to him so if she stays she'll be useless. The way I see it the logical step is to leave.

Serko

I watched the drama multiple times and none of what you said had anything to do with the flaws I pointed out lol and No, the Hitler comparison does not even make remotely sense, because I explained multiple times, that the shit she supposedly learned in school is not even the real history of Gwangjon and even if he killed all of his brothers and then some, it still would be nowhere near Hitler, not even close for a King in that time period. It was actually really common for kings and queens, not just in Korea, but in China and all over Europe to get rid of threats to your legitemacy. The irony that you compare the one prince that didn't even kill his own brothers, except one that was a traitor, in actual real history and freed slaves and made the society more equal for everyone, even slaves, to Hitler is crazy and historically illiterate to me. That's just throwing buzz words around lightly to ignite an irrational emotional response to strengthen your argument, for people that don't know the actual history and see beyond the obvious flaws in how Hae Soo was poorly written. Even the claim that the 14th never did anything to Wang So is ridiculous - have you forgotten the scene, where they summoned Hae Soo and asked her about the 3th princes will and how the 14th prince together with his mother spread doubts about Wang Sos legitemacy? You do know that in that time period, that is treason right? Just like the dead hawk gift from the 8th prince. I think you don't understand, that Wang So is extremely lenient for this time period. Every other Emperor would never let multiple royal decrees that were disobeyed by Hae Soo slide. She can be glad that Wang So didn't execute her or killed the 8th or 14th prince, which was well within his rights to do so without even an afterthought. Same goes for Chae Ryeong, who literally poisoned an EMPEROR. What the hell do you think should her punishment be? House arrest? lol And of course her opinions don't matter to him, if she always goes around begging and understanding everyones problems but the one she "loves". The decisions he makes are even way softer than he needs to be like only exiling his brothers but she still complains. You think being Emperor is like some random guy that has to listen to his (not even) "wife", who has not political power, no real idea of how to govern a whole country, no idea how politics work - other than please don't kill your brothers, don't kill your brothers - please spare UK, he only killed like 2 princes and tried to kill you too and stopped our marriage and made you marry my sister, but I love him like all the brothers so show mercy. What kind of fairytale logic BS is that? And you do realize your why should she stay argument makes no sense right? She is lucky that Wang So has a soft spot for her and even lets her go and marry his effin brother instead of exiling her or just killing all the brothers or even her lol She has no rights in this time period. She should be eternally grateful that Wang So didn't do anything of the options I mentioned, which every other noble or king at the time would do without batting an eye. And the real Wang So from actual history was even more competent and too worthy for an airhead like Hae Soo, with her made up knowledge of Gwangjongs history, that isn't even true. And last but least, sorry to break it to you, but she is actually dumb compared to most characters, even Empress Hwa, the sister. She purely works on vibes and emotions, not a single thought or intelligent plan in her head, even with all her future knowledge. What did she use that fake future knowledge for? Saying to the 8th prince over and over again to be careful of Wang So, or everyone dies, making him paranoid. Great, intelligent job Hae Soo, lol

Mag

You know what I think is the worst part about the situation with Chae Ryeong? So took away Soo's chance to confront her. To talk. If my friend, sister, or closest person betrayed me like that, I would want to be able to talk to her.

Afra Lambourdiere

ok I'll comment what I meant in the comment section of the last episode because I also did watch it multiple times and believe it or not my comparison does make sense and also aligns with the actual history I won't argue more on that here as it is a spoiler, but maybe rewatch the last episode of the series and also the 18 ep (6:33) is a hint of what I am trying to say without spoiling in one of those and the finale

Serko

No it doesn't align at all with the actual history wtf. Do you even know what Hitler did and if you really try to tell me that Gwangjongs actual history aligns with Hitler you must be crazy. Ask ChatGPT, even an AI concludes that comparison historically illiterate, laughable and downright crazy. He is much more comparable to Abraham Lincoln, who was no saint either - no leader is. But either you are very immature or historically illiterate to make these comparisons. Hitler killed millions of people and Wang So killed greedy nobles that tried to bring slavery and servitude back and block commoners from rising up in society. Wtf are you trying to gaslight with your arguments?

Afra Lambourdiere

Ok so you clearly misunderstood something somehow in my answers because I said it and I'll say it again, me understanding and defending Hae soo doesn't mean that I agree with her. So is wrong for killing Chae Ryeong without consulting Hae Soo and he is wrong for expecting her to get over it right away . Sorry not sorry it is a fact Her being sad over Chae Ryeong death is not dumb it is justified. I never said So shouldn't have killed Chae Ryeong, that wasn't even in question in my comments I wanted her dead as much as the next person. Yup 14th prince distrusts So and isn't understanding of him because to Jeong, So attempted to kill Yo and actually killed the 10th prince when (once again to Jeong) he had other options. The 14th prince because he is a general and leads armies represents a danger, therefor he was exiled. However it wasn't only Hae Soo telling So to be more lenient and to let 14th say his goodbyes because their mother were on her death bed. So was petty, jealous and vengeful and he was wrong. I didn't say he was not justified ever. On the contrary I keep saying that the way he acts is understandable hence why more often than not people (me included) take his side. Since you bring up the hawk thing, So planted that hawk so he could kill the 8th. See how even tho it IS justified it IS also morally wrong? What I am pushing when I point out the moral flaws is that So isn't a squiky clean all good no flaws character. He can be ruthless/ harsh / vengeful when he wants to but that's not Hae Su. She has the luxury to have morals that comes from the modern age where people's death is not something light like that. Saying "she should be used to it by now" doesn't change shit and saying she's dumb for not adapting to this reality is just being blind to the struggles that it takes. Also lastly I am arguing that she shouldn't stay, not the other way around and I don't know how you got that wrong because it was my main point. When I mention So marrying another woman I am not saying he shouldn't (by the way she let go of that marriage willingly so idk why you act like it was So's decision when it was Hae Su's), What I am saying is his actions didn't align with his promises, and that is a fact, and that is a reason why (not the main reason but a reason nonetheless) Hae Soo is justified in wanting to leave. Head Lady Court Ho warned her that the palace changes people and their promises and wether or not he is justified it is true in So and Hae Soo's case.

Afra Lambourdiere

Ok I think you're once again severly misunderstood what I said (english isn't my native language so maybe there's some of that here too). My point makes sense, there is a plot point in the last ep that links the story we're told about Gwang Jeong (Hae Su's version) and the real Historical Gwang Jeong together that has nothing to do with Hae Su flunking school or being dumb... I am not trying to gaslight you, and I havent deluded myself into inventing a new storyline either. I'll discuss it under the comments of the last ep reaction when it comes out

Serko

I won't even argue all of these nonsensical points with you know, because Hae Soo is so squeaky clean herself right? Lusting after her dying cousins husband, which that poor woman saw her as a daughter and SHE especially should feel disgusted by such a man, with her backstory being backstabbed by a cheating boyfriend - but she is morally an angel. Defying the emperors order multiple times, with the expectation that he won't punish you anyway, literally taking advantage of his love for you to do whatever the hell you want. Yeah, really a great woman who is loyal. Did you even watch the show? The 14th prince has an army and what could he do after plotting all that time with Hae Soo and Hae Soo not telling where the 10 prince is, and giving him a chance to help him escape? And after that the 14th had the audacity to say I'm gonna kill him, because he killed Eun - even Hae Soo understood clearly that it was Euns last wish and greatly agonized Wang So. So why in the world is the 14th worthy of Wang Sos Mercy or even doing anything for his brothers other than Baek Ah? Just because Hae Soo asks, begs and backstabs him emotionally and officially by breaking all the palace rules, knowing full well she is taking advantage of his feelings for her? So he should just do everything and explain everything to an airhead girl, that didn't listen to him, didn't listen to Ji Mong, didn't listen to Lady Oh, but okay nice lets take her advice and always let everything she does to insult me as a MAN and an EMPEROR of a whole nation slide, because shes cute. lol whatever And you didn't even talk about a the Hitler comparison, the actual argument that offendend and downright insulted my intelligence the most, because I promise you, you will sound like a birdbrain if you actually think you can compare these two even remotely. Let's end this discussion, you are not even bringing good arguments or discussing rationally or with facts based analysis. As soon as I heard Hitler, I knew you were a lost cause and every minute I spend explaining stuff to you is a waste of time. Still, no hard feelings and have a good day. A K-Drama is not worth going back and forth over talking past each other and in the end no one is accepting the others arguments.

For the love of God, if English is not your first language than you really shouldn't throw comparisons to Hitler around. WHERE in the hell does the last episode link the (fake history) story we're told about Gwangjon and the real actual historically accurate accomplishments and real historical King Wang So, who was anything but Hitler. Do you not understand what I am saying? The real king Wang So that exists in our world, not in Kdrama world, was a visionary, progressive, and brilliant king that did things comparable to Abraham Lincoln and was actually the perfect type of King for an airhead modern woman like Hae Soo, for this time period especially. Find me another King that frees slaves, gives everyone equal rights and opportunities to attend school and education for goverment positions not through family connections or wealth but by merit and intelligence, regardless of background? How do you even take a real existing King like Wang So that did all that and was moderately ruthless only to nobles and powerful people, not innocent slaves or commoners, and compare him to Hitler? That shit is slander. I really hope you don't base your comparison to Hitler on that scene in the last Episode where she visits the museum and you actually think that what the show shows there is historically accurate? You do understand, that the show does not portray the real King Wang So accurately at all, right?

Ah and I didn't see your last point : Empress Hwa is smart and strategic. I don't why you took her as comparison points for dumb characters going as far as saying "even her" when she was raised with the education a PRINCESS and learned early how to navigate in the palace from birth. Empress Hwa's motivations and Hae Su's motivations are WIDELY different. Empress Hwa is power hungry, Hae Su is powerless. Hae Su has been tortured, and then she was a water maid, and then she was an hostage for Yo, sue her for wanting an happy ending. And If her wrong choices only stems from her mistrust of So and not her actual intelligence I am sorry I don't think she's dumb. One character that I would call dumb is the 10th prince, and Hae Su is nowhere near that level.

I think you are either purposefully ignoring my arguments and take out small, really unimportant points I made and ignore my points where you actually have to explain something based on real knowledge of history and not just K-drama history or K-drama logic lol I only threw Empress Hwa in there, because the trio really didn't like her in the beginning and she was the only other direct woman in Hae Soos age range that came to mind, but with time they even supported her over Hae Soo and acknowledged her intelligence and ambition. I acknowledge Hwas intelligence. Now it is clear that English is not your first language lol I didn't say "even" as an insult towards Empress Hwa or that she is not intelligent. I said EVEN her, a character that was generally disliked, gets more praise for her cunning and planning and thinking things through. Actually, if you take into account that Hae Soo grew up with the internet, modern education, smartphones etc. and the 10th prince is still mentally a child and gifts girls marbles and toys - there is not thaaaat much difference in actual intelligence or decision making between Hae Soo and the 10th prince hahaha Seriously, not arguing right now, but can you tell me where Hae Soo demonstrated more intelligence than the 10th prince in any of her actions ? xD And I'm not talking about using her charms, her looks, her manipulating the feelings of Wang So and taking advantage of his soft spot. I mean actual intelligence or a plan that worked and didn'T make everything 100 times worse? I guess, when she used that plant medicine to help crown prince Jeung Un with his itching, but thats like the least you can expect from a modern make up artist, where excema and itching skin conditions are so common that everyone knows about them.

Sorry for the comment but I had to comment cause it was getting a little frustrating: Yall are waaaay too harsh on haesoo and chaeryeong. Chaeryong had no choice it was her life/ her family life. She had 0 status and was only a slave. She had to agree to whatever everyone told her to do because of her status. I feel like Haesoo good traits are completely ignored and so’s awful traits are covered up

I was actually really surprised by your guys' reactions this episode. I agree with Afra below.

I want to preface this by saying its not a bad or good thing just different than I expected. I read the explanation on the 19th video and see this must have been a heated discussion. I too am team So, I watched this while it was airing and was still team So since episode 1. I love characters like this and Madame in K2 etc. When watching you guys react I appreciate how you guys will dive into the motivation, pov or psyche of a character. Like the 3rd prince or Empress Yu. I just didnt see that, not just Su but her friend too, this episode. I thought one of you would bring up the friends pov or experience. It was just surprising you were all on that same page. Adorkable did get back to it with the petty argument and seeing that it wasnt from Su pov.

I'm a very very emotional person and my perspective is, ever since her visions she's been suspicious of the 4th prince and has had an inkling of a bias against him. And has never truly been able to let go of that. That, plus viewing chaeryeong as her innocent little sister whose been with her for a long time made her unable to really process the situation and not side with her over trying to understand the 4th prince. I don't think the information about all of chaeryeongs wrong doings has even registered in her brain, so she can't help but defend her even if it doesn't make sense. I think she might be able to see the situation from a different point of view some day, but right now she's just in denial. The 4th prince probably should have communicated what he knew right from the start, to ease the blow. Now, I can understand and explain her behaviour, but can I relate? absolutely not But she's a very very typical Kdrama female lead from this time period. Basically somewhat of a Mary sue. Or a noble idiot? Unrealistically strong but often inappropriate/false sense of righteousness. Always doing what they think is the right thing to do according to their morals but in doing so they often end up hurting their loved ones, sacrificing/damaging their own relationships or get involved when its none of their business and thus make the situation even worse. Objectively you can't really be against them, but they are extremely frustrating to watch and i'm glad we're past this era.

I don't really undertand the comments thinking you're "criticizing Hae Soo too much". I've watched this show about 12 times. I've always loved her character and empathize with a lot of her reactions. I completely get how much PTSD she must have at this point in the story after everything she's witnessed. That said, she DOES make emotional decisions, and she has been doing that from the start. She's given everyone passes, but was always overly critical of the 4th prince even before he'd do anything. Wang So could have communicated better, but how many times didn't she communicate with him, yet blabbered to others? It's fair to criticize her reactions to this situation. It doesn't make her a terrible person, just flawed. And So is flawed too, just like every character in this drama. People expecting you to hold back your opinions clearly don't appreciate honest reactions...

They're so biased lmao

Fun fact: Koreans learn history from elementary to high school and Gwangjong is permanent fixture on the test. Even I, who graduated highschool 5years ago still remember his name and charactistics: Fair but bloody. He’s definitely not just one of the kings to Koreans.
