Song Yan was being completely disrespectful! He was previously engaged to her and she was supposed to be his wife, not his Concubine. By ending the engagement but not wanting to lose her, he wants her to be a Concubine while he holds someone else as the wife. What a complete jerk. Him and his mom are social climbers so basically they used Changyu's family to get his education but since she lost her parents, they act like she has no more value, hence the broken engagement and rumors going around about her being bad luck.

I know I am late to the comments - from my understanding, his asking her to be his concubine was very disrespectful in the context. Even though a man could have many concubines, his wife had official status that couldn't be ignored. She was officially in charge of the back courtyard and could reward or punish concubines according to the family rules, make marriage arrangements for their children (because she would be considered their official mother), managed the household accounts and what resources went to which woman, and potentially even sell them off elsewhere depending on the situation. As a scholar, Song Yan is on track to become an official within the government which makes the offer even worse. Chinese culture put great emphasis on people acting properly within their social roles whether that was child to parents, slave to master, minister to Emperor, etc. Officials were expected to model this behavior as the thought was that you could only properly manage the affairs of the country if you knew how to properly manage the affairs of your household. The social view of concubines was as a man's 'plaything' and pampering concubines while ignoring the main wife (e.g. not giving full power and authority that was hers by right) was shameful to the point of costing a position. TL;DR - By offering to make her a mere concubine, he was stating that he was such a great man she should be happy with being what effectively was a slave with status.
