Lee is very close to the truth about the tally. Good job! Prince Chengde was the crown prince of the late emperor, and his son is Qi Min. The current puppet emperor Qi Sheng and the princess are also the son and daughter of the late Emperor, their mum is Empress Dowager who we saw. So Wei yan put him on throne when he was a child after the crown prince was killed 17 years ago. Qi Min was burnt by his own mother, to save him from being recognized and killed, and she exchanged him and sent him as Prince Changxin's son to save him.

@Lee, you got it! That’s how tiger tallies were used in ancient china, as a physical credential to verify the authenticity of military orders. And you also remembered it right. In an earlier scene, they showed Prince Changxin claiming that Wei Qilin’s other half was fake that’s why he refused to send reinforcements. Now, why he would make that claim will be explained later, but it was hinted at by the younger son in the scene after Prince Changxin was killed and he was feeling discouraged and Qi Min was gassing him up. The younger son said ever since the previous emperor “misled” Prince Changxin, he had been chasing some grand cause. Btw, I got so excited when you copied how the younger brother called out Xie Zheng’s name when he came to challenge him at his military camp (sheh jung!). That’s it!

As for Qi Min, he is a tragic character. I cannot actually completely hate him. I know he’s done heinous things, but the drama does a good job of showing his vulnerability too. Despite his mother saying she burned his face to protect him, how do you get over that? Your own parent maiming you intentionally, and a foster father that never looked at him as worthy because of his disability. That trauma really shaped his life, mentally, emotionally, and physically, left a big hole in him that he thinks only power and status could fill. Whereas Xie Zheng looks at power as a burden that he must bear to protect the people, Qi Min looks at it as something he needs to protect himself and make himself whole.

It’s amazing how much parallelism Qi Min and Xie Zheng have: - Both are shaped by powerful fathers who were good friends themselves - Both grew up and were hurt by a parental figure that was supposed to protect them - Both carry emotional scars from moms who took their own lives. - Both have love interests that saved them at their first encounter - Both are ruthless and relentless in the pursuit of their goals - Both are hot (just had to squeeze this one in) The drama uses these similarities to show, yes your environment does shape how you go through life, but it doesn’t define you. You always have a choice on how to rise to the challenge. Perfect example is how they acted towards their women. Qi Min wanted to trap Qianqian into his world. Xie Zheng wanted to keep Changyu free and unencumbered by the demands of his world. When faced with rejection, Qi Min tightens the shackles. Xie Zheng goes “What can I do to clear the obstacles so you can be free to choose me?” I’ll clear your father’s name. I’ll help you rebuild Linan. I’ll help you surround yourself with people that can help protect you. I’ll protect you from the shadows to allow you to grow and be your own person.

This made me like Marquis more lol. I didn’t see that deeply. Like I saw it. Buuut when you put on paper It’s like… yo wait a minute. We gotta give him more credit

I hope it's not too late. There is a post credit scene in ep 33, hopefully you won't miss it.

Well said @Lani

@Lani, I'm so glad you pointed that out! Not only do Xie Zheng and Qi Min parallel each other, but both of their "relationships" parallel each other, as well. Changyu and Qian Qian are fully capable of taking care of themselves and flourishing in their own spaces. Xie Zheng and Qi Min outrank them and have more power than them. Xie Zheng never uses his power against Changyu, but Qi Min has ALWAYS used his power against Qian Qian. That's the only way he's ever related to her, is by overpowering her. Both of these men love these women (I do believe Qi Min loves Qian Qian as much as he knows how), but Xie Zheng allows Changyu agency in her own life. Qi Min does not allow Qian Qian any agency; he has to control her every move. Both of these men grew up without their parents, without seeing a healthy relationship modeled, so neither of them know what they're doing in a relationship. But Xie Zheng listens to Changyu and gives her the space she wants; Qi Min only cares what Qian Qian says when it doesn't disrupt his own plans and desires, and he doesn't want her out of his presence. They don't have a real relationship because Qi Min never actually relates to Qian Qian; he just has a hostage who's always doing what she can to get away from him.

Btw, since you guys are almost done. There's a deleted scene from episodes 37-38 that was cut from final show after they released it. The show was released with the scene but then cut from some platforms. It's fan service of the bathtub scene and aftermath...please watch this clip. This clip has English subtitles. 😍 https://youtu.be/pFcL-hO5F-Y?is=POzXXMWLxON8ypU

If you start watching more cdramas, you will realize how badass was Xie Zheng for defying a decree, it's something that you will see very very rare in these shows, it's a huge deal. Like no matter how dumb/slow is an order, the characters usually listen to it because it's their duty, there are so many cdramas where I'm annoyed by it, that's I really loved that scene.

Jedi_K

OMG!! So true! When I watch these shows I do get annoyed at them just always blindly listening to every order, even though I know that's how it probably really was. Defying can usually cost anyone their life but if they have so much power, how can they just listen to every order even if it doesn't make any sense. Lol, this kind of thinking is also why they probably have so many rebellions. LOL!

My interpretation of Li (the younger) is that he does believe he is doing the right thing for the country. The current Emperor is nothing more than a puppet controlled by Wei Yan and now he finds out that the most legitimate imperial line, the son of a national hero, is still alive. That has to seem like a better option - a true emperor who will cleanse the court of the corruption of Wei Yan. General He might even have supported the son of a Prince he admired taking the throne. Li’s only error is not realizing that Qi Min is a psychopath and that his grandfather is also jostling for power.

Hyuna

True, that's why I would probably die if I had to live in this era😂

This is such a good breakdown
