Hey guys!

The first Public LiT episode was posted on Twitter. As for episode 6... :D The other episodes will also be public as soon as the new sound is complete. Unfortunately, Candy is moving, so we’ll only be able to continue this in October.

I made the normal size belly version from LiTSiX. I was looking for a good render farm. A brutal price was calculated for me. Rendering this alternate version alone would be $7,000. With that money, I could already build my own render machine. If I think further, the Gatekeeper P3 will be 12 minutes. Rendering this would be $40,000. What’s worse, it would take a month to render. Yes, with the render farm. :(

When I started the project I was counting. I found that for longer movies, the render time should be kept within 1 minute/frame. I was able to keep this up with Eevee. However, when I switched to Cycles, it was completely overwhelmed. LiTSiX had 1 frame for 7 minutes. I tested it. I would have to subtract the detail to 60 samples for Cycles to render 1 frame in 1 minute. The result is a blob. This is not a solution. :(

Now I don’t want to put together a rendering machine because the new GeForce video cards are coming in late September. I don't know when these will be available from us. I want to buy one or two RTX 3090s and build the render machine on it. Based on current tests, this would allow me to render faster than an average render farm.  But this will not happen until October at the earliest.

What will be the solution?

The fact that now I’m going to render the normal belly version of LiTSiX again with Eevee. Little compensation that this version will come in 2K with motion blur. The first two parts of Gatekeeper were also made with Eevee. So I stay with Eevee. Probably even after I have the new render machine. I’d rather change things like 4K or 60 fps.So far it was not clear to me which render engine is better. Something more beautiful in Eevee, something in Cycles. So now I’m resetting the materials to Eevee compatible. And I’ll start rendering LiTSiX this weekend. I think you will need 2 weekends.

I’m coming this week with fresh P3 WIPs.

Good night!

Gaming With Andy

I didn't even realize this takes so much effort.

WOAH! $40,000? That some crazy shi*!

With such high resolution textures that youre using, you dont really need to render in cycles for it to look good. Sometimes Eevee looks 100 times better than cycles and the render time with optix instead of cuda helps even more. I would suggest just try and use eevee even for future.

Barsett

I'd say stick with Eevee for now until you are able to build some render machines and then give Cycles another try. See if the render times are better then and if not then stick with Eevee. Either way keep on keeping on dude.

Jack

Personally, I don’t think you should stress yourself out trying to push content with cycles. Your work is already such high quality that the difference is very minor. The first scenes in Eevee looked great. I don’t think the significantly higher render time is proportional to the end quality.

You're a beast, hopefully the 3090 will be a game-changer for sure.

Horsen

Maybe try E-Cycles. I never tried it but it's supposed to be 2x faster

Derples

Just stick with eevee

Magnus

I thought LiT Series with Eevee looked amazing. LiT 4 and 5 is my reference and unless I see a sample from another program Eevee is excellent for what you are doing.

If you get a 3090 update me It’s totally sold Out

wildeerstudio

Yes, I've already tested it. Unfortunately, this is not an addon, but a separate development branch. I don't like this part. And not much faster than the current Optix rendering. But thanks for the tip ;)

wildeerstudio

Yes, I used Optix and denoiser. That's how these numbers came out. Well now back to Eevee for now. ;)

Shmaded

I'm planning on getting a 3090 evga kingpin so if you need the rendering when I'm sleeping let me know :)

Might be worth waiting to see what AMD are about to announce. Nvidea pricing suggests to me they might be a bit more competitive in this cycle

Crazy indeed - it’s equivalent of running your own on-demand AWS EC2 P2.16xlarge for 115 days straight... And for the clarity - that’s a machine with 16 NVIDIA K80 GPUs, 64 vCPUs and 732 GiB of memory.

ANIMENIAC

Good Luck on the 3090's. The 3080's literally sold out in less than ONE SECOND!!!!!!!!!!!

Mark B

Stick with Eevee, it's plenty good enough for what you're doing and is much more time efficient.

Kev

just out of curiosity, are you using intels fancy "new-ish" denoiser? I don't have much experiencing with rendering or anything 3d related, but I played with blender a little bit a while back and rendering without blenders denoiser and then running intels yielded way better images at like half the render time. You're probably already doing that though
