Today we're taking calls into the fifth dimension. The only problem is — Theda didn't realize this was the premise. So there are also calls from the normal dimensions as well. @ Theda, check out some other Imamura films when you can, they will all give you something to say besides this is good / this is bad. The Insect Woman is the one I like the most for teaching, The Pornographers is the most personally significant to me, Profound Desire of the Gods is probably most relevant if you liked Ballad of Narayama. Ballad is also a remake of a 1950s film by Kinoshita Keisuke, another director who is overlooked in English language reception of Japanese film, though he’s much more “commercial” than Imamura. Kinoshita’s stuff is all on Criterion Channel & also he was open-secretly a big gay. my Imamura story is one time I was taking a cab to the bus terminal that goes to the airport and the cab driver had been a cameraman for Imamura during his television documentary days.

also the point about the millennial subjectivity of like “we’re just rich people being boring but there’s a background disaster and war that doesn’t touch us” vs Ballad’s gross in-your-face ancient humanity: Imamura was combating trends towards aestheticizing or romanticizing the “Japanese” “primitive” past which were popular in the midst of the postwar reconstruction and economic miracle, which I think is not dissimilar to what Theda described & why it hits like that today.
