Chapter 525: The Place Where Fire Is Born (Patreon)
Content
Land of Frost — Northern Wilderness
Madara's laughter gradually faded beneath the sound of his body rebuilding itself.
The incomplete Ten-Tails poured chakra through the wounds Cronos had transferred onto him, though its separate currents still refused to cooperate cleanly. Flesh closed across his abdomen in uneven layers. Broken ribs drew together beneath his hand, scraping against newly formed muscle before settling around organs that had only begun to regain their shape.
The deepest cut crossed his chest from shoulder to hip.
Its edges glowed faintly.
Madara's Rinnegan followed the distortion remaining inside the wound, where thin ripples moved through blood and exposed tissue as though time had forgotten which direction it should flow. The marks disappeared one after another, consumed by the Ten-Tails' regeneration before he could understand them.
Several paces away, Alaric waited.
The ruined basin extended around him for miles. The mountains that had once enclosed the valley had become distant walls of falling stone, their shattered peaks descending slowly through air still thick with conflicting gravitational forces.
Alaric stood upon nothing.
His boots hovered above the molten remains of the valley floor while the long edges of his torn coat moved around his legs. Red-gold energy rested against his body without flickering. The phoenix markings around his left eye burned steadily, illuminating the contours of his face as the Rinne-Sharingan watched Madara heal.
There was no urgency in his posture.
Madara had nearly taken his head.
Alaric looked as though he had merely allowed an inconvenient conversation to interrupt the evening.
"You are staring," Madara said.
Alaric's eyes moved from the temporal residue in Madara's wounds to his face.
"I was considering whether there is anything worth saving."
Madara's mouth curved.
"Within the Ten-Tails?"
"Within you."
The amusement remained in Madara's expression, though it no longer reached his eyes.
His right forearm finished repairing itself. The split bone joined beneath pale tissue, followed by tendons that drew his fingers inward before he flexed them open again.
"You believe I require salvation."
"I think you've spent so long calling your wounds wisdom that you've forgotten they were ever injuries."
Madara looked down at the blood covering his palm.
The Ten-Tails chakra robes spread over the skin and absorbed the last of it.
"You have mistaken conviction for illness."
Alaric lowered one hand into the pocket of his coat.
"Conviction is usually attached to something you chose."
"I chose the Eye of the Moon Plan."
"You chose what Black Zetsu placed in front of you."
"I chose to pursue the conclusion written upon the Stone Tablet."
"A tablet he altered."
"The deception does not erase the conclusions I reached before reading it."
"No," Alaric said. "It only gave those conclusions somewhere useful to go."
Madara's ribs finished sealing.
His spine straightened as the pressure inside his chest disappeared. The remaining injuries across his thighs continued closing, slower than the others because several pieces of tailed-beast chakra attempted to reinforce the same muscles through different structures.
He remained still while they worked.
"You speak as though a man cannot be deceived without losing ownership of every decision that follows."
"He can."
"Then your argument is weak."
Alaric's gaze did not shift.
"You're responsible for everything you did. That doesn't make you free."
Madara's smile thinned.
The words entered more cleanly than an accusation.
Alaric drew his hand from his pocket and examined the damage across his glove, where several seams had opened during their clash.
"You keep confusing responsibility with independence. You made choices, Madara. You killed people. You manipulated Obito. You tore tailed beasts from their hosts, destroyed villages, and tried to imprison the world inside a dream. Those decisions belonged to you."
He brushed dried blood from one knuckle.
"The fact that Zetsu guided you doesn't excuse any of it. It only proves that the man who believed he had escaped every chain was wearing one around his throat the entire time."
Madara's Truth-Seeking Orbs shifted behind him.
The movement was small, but Alaric noticed it anyway.
"You think naming the chain frees you?" he continued. "You discovered that Zetsu used you, so now you've replaced him with me."
Madara's brow lowered.
"I have replaced nothing."
"You spent decades chasing Hashirama's shadow. Then you chased the promise written on a stone. Now you've decided you'll spend however long it takes chasing my strength."
Madara's chakra robes tightened over his shoulders.
"Hashirama was the only man worthy of standing against me."
"And that became enough to let him define you."
"He did not define me."
"Then why did nearly every major decision in your life bend around him?"
The question passed through the broken valley.
Madara's Limbo clones remained spread across the adjacent world, their invisible forms standing among the collapsing remnants of mountains. None moved. Their stillness mirrored the original body too closely to be accidental.
Alaric stepped forward through the air.
The molten basin beneath him darkened as his shadow passed over it.
"You left the village because Hashirama chose peace you couldn't trust. You returned to fight him because you couldn't accept a world where his way survived yours. You bit off his flesh because you needed his power to complete your own. Even your Rinnegan came from combining yourself with the man you could never stop measuring yourself against."
Madara's fingers curled.
The Truth-Seeking Orbs spread farther apart.
Alaric continued approaching until only several yards remained between them.
"Hashirama died, and you still built your future around defeating what he represented. Then Zetsu offered you a plan that turned your grief into destiny. Now that the plan has been exposed, you've looked at me and decided the answer is another summit."
He stopped.
"You do not know how to live unless something stands above you."
The Ten-Tails stirred violently.
A pulse passed through Madara's chakra robes, bending the air outward. Loose stone rose from the basin and remained suspended around him.
Madara's voice remained quiet.
"You presume to understand a life you did not witness."
"I understand obsession."
"You understand power."
"I understand both."
Alaric's answer carried no heat.
The calmness made it heavier.
Madara studied him through the Rinnegan.
Alaric's body contained enormous chakra, yet his control prevented even a fraction from escaping without purpose. Nature energy flowed through him in perfect balance. The unknown Phoenix power moved beneath it like a second heartbeat, ancient enough to disturb the Ten-Tails while remaining obedient to the man carrying it.
No hunger appeared in his eyes.
No strain tightened his jaw.
Madara had seen powerful men pretend to stand above desire. Their bodies had always betrayed them through breath, posture, or the faint contraction of the pupils whenever they looked upon something they wanted.
Alaric showed none of it.
That absence was irritating.
"You claim to understand obsession," Madara said. "What did yours cost?"
Alaric's eyes narrowed slightly.
For the first time since the conversation began, silence lasted longer than a breath.
The ruined sky above the basin continued shifting. Bands of residual chakra moved between the stars, staining the northern darkness with red and violet light. Far beneath them, molten stone folded inward as gravity slowly returned to its natural direction.
"People," Alaric said.
Madara waited.
Alaric's gaze drifted past him toward the empty horizon.
"Time. Peace. Parts of myself that took years to recognize after they were gone."
His thumb moved along the torn edge of his glove.
"I know what it is to want enough strength that everything else begins looking temporary. I know what it is to measure safety by whether anyone in existence can still threaten the people I love."
Madara's expression changed almost imperceptibly.
"And yet you condemn me."
"I learned to stop worshipping the fear that created the obsession."
"Did you?"
Alaric looked back at him.
Madara spread one hand toward the devastation surrounding them.
"You built power beyond anything born naturally within this world. You possess eyes that should require the completed Ten-Tails, techniques that alter time, immortality that defies death, and a form of senjutsu that makes the beast within me recoil."
His fingers closed.
"You brought me here because you desired an opponent capable of testing all of it."
"Yes."
"Then you remain enslaved by the same hunger."
"No."
The answer arrived without defensiveness.
Madara raised one brow.
Alaric's expression remained composed.
"I wanted this fight. I didn't need it."
"You crossed worlds to cultivate my strength."
"I could have killed you before you became a jinchūriki."
"That does not answer me."
"It does." Alaric gestured between them. "When this ends, I return to my family. I eat dinner. I listen to my son explain something he learned. I deal with whatever political disaster developed while I was away. I live."
A faint breeze passed through the heat around him, lifting several strands of dark hair from his forehead.
"You won't."
Madara's Rinnegan hardened.
"You know nothing of what I will do."
"You already told me."
"I told you I would surpass you."
"Exactly," Alaric's hand lowered. "That became your entire future within minutes."
Madara's lips parted slightly, though no answer came.
Alaric looked at him without triumph.
There was something worse in his expression.
Pity.
"You found out your great purpose was a lie. You discovered that the voice guiding your legacy belonged to a creature hiding beneath the earth. You learned that your suffering, your brilliance, and your arrogance were arranged into a path that ended with another woman wearing your body."
The Phoenix markings cast warm light across Alaric's cheek as he spoke.
"You had the chance to ask what remained when the plan disappeared."
His gaze settled more firmly upon Madara.
"You chose another war."
Madara's chakra pressure expanded.
The remaining fragments of the mountains stopped falling.
For miles around them, stone hung motionless in the air while the incomplete Ten-Tails forced itself against the limits of Madara's control. Its resentment mixed with his own, producing a vibration that traveled through the basin until the molten ground cracked open.
Madara's gaze finally locked onto Alaric's eyes, unblinking. "The world has never offered anything worth choosing beyond struggle."
"You never looked."
"I helped build a village."
"And abandoned it."
"I trusted Hashirama."
"Until he disagreed with you."
"I warned the Uchiha of what would happen."
"And when they refused to follow, you left them behind."
Madara's jaw tightened.
Alaric continued before anger could become attack.
"You wanted loyalty only when it moved in your direction. You wanted peace only if it obeyed your understanding of peace. You wanted freedom for humanity only after removing its ability to choose."
Madara's voice lowered.
"Human choice produced endless war."
"So you tried to save humanity by erasing humanity."
"They would have experienced happiness."
"They would have experienced whatever dream was placed inside their heads while their bodies fed a tree."
"That was Zetsu's intention."
"The Infinite Tsukuyomi was yours before you knew what the tree would do."
Madara fell silent.
The statement left no room for the deception to carry the entire burden.
Alaric stepped closer, until only a few feet separated them.
Madara could have attacked. Ten Limbo clones stood ready. Truth-Seeking Orbs hovered behind him. The incomplete Ten-Tails had repaired nearly every wound Cronos inflicted.
He did nothing.
Alaric's voice softened.
"You were a child who watched brothers die until love became something you measured by how much pain it could survive."
Madara's expression emptied.
"You learned that attachment created weakness because every person you cared for became another grave. Then Hashirama showed you a future where children might live, and for a little while, you believed him."
The memory arrived before Madara could stop it.
A river.
Flat stones skipping across water.
Hashirama's ridiculous hair shifting in the breeze while two boys stood without clan crests, pretending their names carried no blood between them.
Alaric watched the faint change in his eyes.
"When that future failed to obey you, you decided the world itself was defective."
Madara's fingers trembled once.
The movement disappeared beneath the chakra robes.
Alaric did not smile.
He did not push closer.
"You were betrayed," he said. "You were manipulated. You lost people you loved. None of that makes you weak."
Madara's eyes narrowed.
"Do not speak to me as though I seek your comfort."
"I'm not offering comfort."
"Then what are you offering?"
"A way out."
The answer remained between them.
Madara stared at him.
Alaric continued in the same even tone.
"Release the Ten-Tails."
The beast convulsed inside Madara.
His Limbo clones shifted.
"Abandon the Eye of the Moon Plan," Alaric said. "Stop treating strength as proof that you deserve to decide how everyone else lives. Accept that you were used without turning that realization into another reason to dominate the world."
Madara's face remained unreadable.
"You expect surrender."
"I expect choice."
"To live beneath the authority of men weaker than myself?"
"To live without needing their weakness to justify your existence."
Madara's mouth curved.
The expression carried no amusement now.
"You would reduce me to an ordinary life."
"I would give you the opportunity to discover whether there is anything inside you besides war."
"War shaped this world."
"So did people who grew crops after it ended."
"Small lives."
"Real lives."
"Insignificant."
Hearing that, Alaric's eyes cooled.
Madara saw the change and continued.
"A farmer tills his field until another nation burns it. A father protects his child until a shinobi stronger than him chooses otherwise. Villages speak of peace while training children to kill. Daimyō trade human lives for borders, resources, and pride."
His repaired hand lifted toward the ruined horizon.
"You speak of returning to your family because you possess enough power to ensure that no one can take them from you. Do not praise ordinary life while standing above every threat that makes ordinary life fragile."
Alaric's gaze remained fixed on him.
"You think that disproves what I said?"
"It reveals your hypocrisy."
"No. It reveals why I use my strength to protect the life I chose instead of replacing everyone else's choices with mine."
Madara's eyes sharpened.
"You rule."
"I govern."
"You manipulate nations."
"I influence them."
"You place men under genjutsu."
"When necessary."
"You decide which rulers deserve their thrones, which wars may begin, and which threats are permitted to live."
Alaric's jaw shifted slightly.
Madara noticed.
"You differ from me only because your illusion allows people to remain awake."
The words landed, and for several seconds neither man moved.
The red-gold aura around Alaric continued flowing, smooth as heat rising from metal beneath a forge. His Rinne-Sharingan never left Madara, though something behind the eye had withdrawn.
Madara recognized it as disappointment.
Alaric released a slow breath through his nose. "I wondered whether you might be able to hear the difference."
"The difference exists only in scale."
"No," Alaric's hand rose between them. "The difference is that I know power does not make me morally correct."
Madara's smile returned.
"And yet you stand ready to punish me because I reject your judgment."
"I stand ready to stop you because you intend to enslave the world."
"A distinction convenient to the victor."
"It's a distinction understood by anyone who recognizes other people as people."
Madara's smile disappeared.
Alaric studied him for another long moment.
The attempt to reach him remained visible only through small details. The stillness of his shoulders. The way his fingers had loosened instead of forming a seal. The absence of mockery from his voice.
He had genuinely offered Madara a path away from the war.
Madara looked at that path and saw humiliation.
Surrender.
A life beneath others.
A world where his strength no longer granted him the right to reshape reality.
His answer had already formed long before Alaric spoke.
"I will not release the Ten-Tails."
Alaric's fingers lowered by an inch.
"I know."
"I will not abandon the power required to surpass you."
"I know."
"I will never submit myself to the judgment of weaker men."
Alaric closed his eyes, the Phoenix marking continuing to glow around the lid.
Madara watched him in silence.
When Alaric opened his eyes again, the trace of pity had vanished.
A quiet chuckle escaped him.
Madara raised a brow.
Alaric looked upward for a moment, as though amused by his own failed expectation.
"A lost cause."
The words carried no anger as he smiled faintly and shook his head.
"That should have been obvious."
Madara's Truth-Seeking Orbs moved.
Alaric was already in front of him.
His right hand closed around Madara's throat.
Madara's Rinnegan widened as his Limbo clones attacked from every angle.
The Rinne-Sharingan rotated.
Space opened without forming a portal.
The world folded inward around both men, and the Limbo strikes passed through an absence where their bodies had been.
.
There was no ground or sky... Madara appeared within fire.
It extended in every direction, without horizon or boundary. There was no stone beneath his feet, though he remained suspended within the burning expanse. No magma moved below him. No volcanic mountains interrupted the distance. No smoke gathered above.
Only fire existed.
Layers of it folded through one another, some red enough to resemble ordinary flame, others white, blue, gold, violet, or nearly colorless. Vast currents moved across the dimension like oceans without water, their surfaces curling into waves that stretched farther than Madara's Rinnegan could follow.
Alaric released his throat.
Madara moved away instantly, chakra gathering around his body while the ten Limbo clones attempted to follow.
They did not appear; the connection remained, though even the adjacent plane seemed unable to overlap cleanly with this place.
Alaric hovered several yards away.
His coat remained untouched by the surrounding flames. They bent around him without being commanded, curving close to his shoulders and passing beneath his boots like creatures recognizing their master.
Madara examined the dimension.
The heat registered against his skin, though the Ten-Tails chakra robes absorbed it easily. His restored body possessed resistance beyond any ordinary shinobi. Nature energy reinforced his tissues, while the incomplete beast distributed the strain across multiple chakra sources.
The flames themselves did not trouble him.
"What is this place?" Madara asked.
Alaric looked around with open curiosity.
"I'm not entirely sure yet."
Madara turned toward him.
Alaric lifted one hand, watching a strand of white fire wrap around his fingers.
"This is the first time I've used this kind of ability."
"You created a dimension without understanding it."
"I understood enough."
Madara's Rinnegan followed the currents.
Unlike Kamui, the space did not feel hollow or separated from natural law. It possessed its own structure, though every law inside it seemed organized around fire. Heat, light, movement, distance, and even the flow of chakra bent toward the same elemental principle.
"You pulled us into a world produced by your eye."
Alaric considered the description.
"That seems accurate."
Madara studied him.
The admission contained no caution.
Alaric had used one of the Rinne-Sharingan's highest dimensional abilities for the first time, transported a Ten-Tails jinchūriki into an unfamiliar world, and now observed the result with the relaxed interest of a man inspecting a new room in his home.
A current of golden fire rose behind him.
It spread into the shape of wings large enough to cover the horizon, then dissolved without disturbing his hair.
Alaric's smile deepened.
"Madara."
The name traveled clearly through the fire.
"Do you know how hot the sun is?"
Madara's eyes narrowed.
"The outer surface is several thousand degrees."
"Close enough."
Alaric tilted his head slightly.
"Then have you ever felt heat stronger than that?"
Madara raised one brow as the dimension changed.
There was no explosion; the flames did not grow larger, they simply became hotter.
Madara's eyes widened.
Heat entered from every direction at once.
The Ten-Tails chakra robes ignited around him, their pale surface turning red before the outer layer peeled away in burning fragments. His skin tightened instantly. Moisture vanished from his mouth and eyes before regeneration could replace it.
Madara drew the chakra robes closer.
The incomplete Ten-Tails roared.
Sage chakra flooded his body, thickening the barrier until its surface distorted the fire surrounding him. For one breath, the defense held.
Then the barrier began to melt.
The heat did not strike its surface alone. It appeared within the chakra itself, raising its temperature from the inside until the structure lost cohesion.
Madara brought his hands together.
Truth-Seeking Orbs surrounded him.
The black spheres expanded and joined, forming a complete shell around his body. Yin-Yang Release spread across the barrier, erasing the flames that touched it.
For less than a second, darkness enclosed him.
A red point appeared in the shell.
Then another.
The Truth-Seeking barrier softened.
Madara's Rinnegan widened as the supposedly indestructible substance began losing its shape. The black surface turned viscous, sagging inward in thick streams while heat penetrated through the Yin-Yang composition faster than it could erase the surrounding fire.
The shell melted.
Drops of black matter fell from it and vanished before reaching anything below.
Madara forced the remaining orbs apart.
"Water Release: Great Water Annihilation!"
An ocean erupted around him.
Billions of gallons expanded through the dimension, surrounding Madara in spiraling layers while Ten-Tails chakra reinforced every drop.
The water flashed into steam.
The steam separated into its constituent particles.
Even those particles glowed before disappearing into the fire.
Madara formed another sequence.
"Water Release: Water Formation Wall!"
The wall did not finish forming.
"Ice Release—"
The chakra destabilized before nature transformation could complete.
Madara's jaw tightened.
He extended one hand.
A complete Susanoo rose around him.
Blue chakra climbed through the inferno, forming ribs, muscle, armor, wings, and four colossal arms. The warrior expanded until its head towered above currents of flame large enough to consume mountain ranges.
Madara stood inside the crystal upon its forehead.
The Susanoo drew its swords as its armor began to glow.
Fine cracks opened across the breastplate. The wings curled inward as their chakra structure weakened. One sword bent in the giant's hand, its edge dripping away as blue fire before the arm carrying it collapsed at the elbow.
Madara poured more chakra into the construct.
The incomplete Ten-Tails answered with a surge.
The Susanoo grew denser, its armor renewing across every damaged section. New layers formed over the old, each reinforced by senjutsu and the Rinnegan.
They melted faster.
The giant's face lost its shape.
Its jaw slid away.
Its chest opened as molten chakra poured down its body in luminous rivers.
Madara abandoned the Susanoo before it collapsed around him.
He emerged into the fire with both arms raised, using Shinra Tensei to force the surrounding heat away.
"Shinra Tensei!"
The dimensional fire bent outward.
A hollow sphere opened around him.
Madara's robes smoldered as he stood at its center, chest rising with a breath his scorched lungs struggled to take.
The heat returned inside the repulsive field.
It did not cross the boundary.
It existed on both sides.
Madara's skin split across his arms. Blood emerged and evaporated before it could run. The Ten-Tails rebuilt the tissue, though each new layer burned as quickly as it formed.
He increased the force.
The repulsive field expanded for miles, shoving entire seas of fire away from him.
Nothing improved.
Temperature had become independent of distance.
Madara lowered one hand and opened a path through space.
The portal distorted.
Its edges glowed white.
Before the opening could stabilize, the dimensional membrane burned away, leaving only fire behind.
He tried Kamui through the Rinnegan's understanding of space-time displacement.
The target coordinates collapsed.
He attempted to exchange places with an object beyond the dimension.
No object answered.
The fire world had sealed itself around them.
Madara turned toward Alaric.
Alaric remained where he had first appeared.
The heat did not touch him.
White and golden flames moved across his coat like reflected light. His hair remained still. The torn fabric around his collar had not blackened, and the exposed skin beneath it showed no sign of strain.
His hands rested behind his back.
The Rinne-Sharingan observed Madara without visible effort.
Madara's teeth clenched as the flesh across his jaw burned away and regenerated.
The heat intensified.
His Ten-Tails chakra cloak disappeared entirely.
Black markings across his chest began glowing red. The incomplete horn softened at its tip. Madara felt the ocular fluid within his Rinnegan begin to boil before chakra flooded the eyes and rebuilt them.
He formed another Truth-Seeking barrier.
It melted before closing.
A Limbo clone forced part of itself into the dimension.
For an instant, its arm emerged beside Madara.
The arm ignited without visible flame, turning red before the adjacent-plane body recoiled. The connection transmitted the pain back through Madara, adding another current to the agony already consuming his physical body.
Alaric watched calmly.
His face held no satisfaction.
That indifference sharpened the humiliation.
Madara had endured death.
He had awakened the Rinnegan after decades of waiting.
He had controlled the Gedo Mazō, survived resurrection, and forced the incomplete Ten-Tails into his soul.
Inside this place, none of it gave him command.
The fire did not challenge his strength... it ignored it.
Madara's skin burned away from his chest, revealing ribs that blackened before the Ten-Tails replaced them. His left hand lost three fingers. They regrew and burned again before he could finish the next seal.
He attempted to absorb the energy.
His Rinnegan opened fully.
The first current entered his palm.
Madara's entire arm ignited from within.
The absorbed heat bypassed his defenses, racing through chakra pathways until his shoulder burst apart in a spray of burning tissue.
Regeneration pulled the arm back together, but the pain remained, and his breath broke.
A sound escaped his throat before he could contain it.
"Ghh—!"
Alaric's head tilted by a fraction.
The temperature climbed again.
Madara's protections collapsed together.
The remnants of his chakra robes vanished. His skin charred across most of his body. Regeneration fought continuously, restoring flesh into a world that destroyed it before sensation could fade.
His mouth opened.
The first scream emerged raw and involuntary.
"GRAAAAAAAAAAAAGH—!!"
The sound spread through the fire dimension.
Madara forced his jaw closed, though the muscles along his face had already begun burning away. His Rinnegan remained fixed upon Alaric through waves of light powerful enough to erase every shadow.
Alaric stood with his hands behind his back.
His phoenix-marked eye glowed steadily.
The fire bowed around him.
Madara pushed more of the Ten-Tails into his body.
The beast answered from desperation rather than obedience. Its fragmented chakra flooded every organ, creating layers of regeneration that replaced his body faster than ordinary destruction could consume it.
The dimension grew hotter.
Each new layer burned.
Muscle formed over bone, blackened, and peeled away. His lungs regenerated around a breath of fire, ruptured, then rebuilt. The horn upon his forehead melted down to its base before emerging again.
Madara threw his head back.
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRGHHHH—!!"
His scream carried through the endless fire until his voice broke beneath it.
Alaric watched him without moving.
There was no grin on his face now, no banter, no theatrical anger.
The stillness surrounding him created a deeper pressure than the heat itself. He looked less like a shinobi using a technique and more like the only living authority permitted to exist within that world.
Madara lowered his head through the agony.
His vision blurred, cleared, then blurred again as his eyes repeatedly boiled and regenerated.
Alaric's voice reached him without rising.
"You wanted a summit."
Madara's remaining fingers curled.
The fire tightened around his body.
Alaric's red eyes remained calm.
"Climb."
