Chapter 528: The Brother Beyond Death (Patreon)

Unknown Fire Dimension
"But…"
Madara's voice failed beneath the pressure building inside his skull.
His fingers dug into Alaric's forearm, though whether he intended to remove the hand from his shoulder or hold himself upright remained unclear. The incomplete Ten-Tails dragged against the damaged seal within him, turning every pulse of chakra into a wedge driven between his restored body and the soul anchoring it.
Alaric did not pull away.
Madara stared at him through eyes that had watched clans rise, villages form, brothers die, and every hope he once possessed rot into something harsher. Yet none of those memories explained the man before him.
How did Alaric know Izuna?
The question struck first.
Izuna's name had never carried the same historical weight as Hashirama's or Madara's. Later generations remembered him as the younger brother who surrendered his eyes, another dead Uchiha from an age already reduced to clan records and battlefield stories.
Alaric had spoken of him with precision.
He knew that Izuna's original soul mattered more than a reconstructed body. He knew Madara had carried his brother's eyes throughout the remainder of his life. He understood that no illusion, however perfect, could replace the person Madara remembered.
Questions multiplied until even the Ten-Tails' rebellion could not drown them.
Had Alaric examined his memories?
Had he spoken with anyone?
Had he learned the history through the same impossible source that revealed Kaguya, Black Zetsu, and the altered tablet?
Or had Alaric known Madara long before Madara knew him?
Madara's fingers tightened.
"How…" His voice came through clenched teeth. "How do you know his name?"
Alaric's expression did not shift.
"I know more history than I should."
"That is no answer."
"It is the answer you're receiving."
The fire around them continued flowing through the endless dimension, although its heat had begun to decline now that Phoenix Sage Mode had ended. What remained could still erase ordinary ninjutsu and burn through unprotected flesh, but Madara's altered body was no longer disintegrating as quickly as the Ten-Tails rebuilt it.
The beast recognized that change and pulled harder.
A second pale limb burst from Madara's back.
The malformed arm stretched outward, fingers spreading through the fire as the incomplete Ten-Tails attempted to find an existence beyond the jinchūriki seal. Several dark channels across Madara's chest tore open, releasing chakra that twisted into the beginnings of another shoulder.
"Ugh..." Madara drove more black receivers inward as the escaping limb convulsed. "You will remain where I placed you."
The Ten-Tails answered through his throat.
A roar emerged beneath Madara's voice, deep enough to make the surrounding fire ripple.
"Decide..." Alaric's hand pressed down upon his shoulder, steadying the division between body and soul. "...quickly."
Madara's glare returned to him.
"You would make Izuna another chain."
Alaric remained silent as Madara continued.
"You exposed Black Zetsu because he placed purpose in front of me and called it truth. Now you offer my brother and expect me to walk where you point."
"I told you it was a bargain."
"A bargain constructed from the one life I could never dismiss."
"Yes."
"There it is..." Madara's mouth pulled back, exposing his teeth. "You speak honestly because you believe honesty cleanses manipulation."
"No."
"Then what separates this from Zetsu?"
"You know what I want."
"..."
"..."
The answer struck with uncomfortable simplicity, and Alaric kept his gaze level.
"I have not altered a sacred tablet and waited decades for you to mistake my plan for your revelation. I told you the price directly. Release the Ten-Tails. Abandon the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Stop threatening everyone else's freedom. In return, I restore Izuna."
Madara's breathing turned rougher as the beast dragged another line through the seal.
"This is just you purchasing my obedience."
"I want to purchase your surrender."
Madara's Rinnegan hardened, but Alaric continued before anger could replace thought.
"Your obedience would be useless. I don't want you kneeling beside me, carrying out orders, or pretending you believe something because Izuna's life depends on my approval."
His thumb shifted against Madara's shoulder, feeling the unnatural separation beneath the flesh.
"I want the Ten-Tails out of you before it tears apart the tailed-beast fragments and destabilizes your resurrection. I want the Infinite Tsukuyomi abandoned because it threatens the world. Once Izuna lives, I will not kill him because you displease me or take him away because you refuse to cooperate."
Madara's eyes searched his face.
"You could."
"Yes."
"You expect me to believe you would not."
"No. I expect you to judge my actions after I prove the first part."
Madara's grip loosened slightly.
The offer remained a chain.
He could feel it wrapping around something deeper than Black Zetsu's deception had ever reached. If he accepted Izuna from Alaric, every decision afterward would carry the memory of who had returned his brother. Every conflict would become suspect. Every moment of restraint could be dismissed as payment for a life purchased through surrender.
Madara had spent decades discovering that his supposed will belonged partly to another.
He could not willingly place Izuna at the center of a new debt.
"No."
Alaric watched him.
Madara forced his body straighter despite the malformed limbs growing from his back.
"I will not trade my brother for submission." The words emerged more firmly as he continued. "If Izuna returned through your power, every action I took afterward would carry your hand upon it. Every choice would become something purchased."
Alaric's eyes narrowed slightly.
Madara felt pain tear through his abdomen when the Ten-Tails severed another interior restraint. He endured it without allowing the sentence to break.
"I would wonder whether I abandoned my path because it was wrong or because you found the one price I could not refuse." His Rinnegan held Alaric's. "I will not let Izuna become another leash."
The fire passed between them, and Alaric said nothing for several seconds.
The refusal could have been pride.
Madara had sacrificed armies, villages, and generations of lives to preserve his belief that he alone possessed the strength to shape peace. Rejecting Izuna's return might only prove that his identity mattered more to him than the brother he claimed to love.
Yet Madara had not dismissed the resurrection as weakness.
He had rejected the debt.
For perhaps the first time since discovering Black Zetsu's manipulation, Madara had identified a path designed to move him and refused to step onto it despite how desperately he wanted what waited at the end.
Alaric's expression became thoughtful.
"That may be the first independent decision you've made in a long time."
Madara's mouth tightened.
"I do not require your approval."
"I wasn't giving it."
The malformed arms behind Madara spread wider.
The Ten-Tails drove its chakra toward the fracture again, forcing his shoulder partly away from his body. His fingers tore through the fabric of Alaric's sleeve as a wave of agony crossed his face.
Alaric's gaze dropped toward the seal.
"You're running out of time."
Madara gritted his teeth, the refusal remaining inside him... complete and painful... yet beneath it another truth waited.
Rejecting the bargain did not require continuing the Eye of the Moon Plan.
He had tied the choices together because Alaric had presented them together, but they did not belong to the same decision.
Izuna's resurrection could not purchase his surrender if Madara surrendered for reasons that belonged to him.
Black Zetsu had corrupted the plan.
Kaguya's return waited at its end.
The Ten-Tails was already trying to abandon and destroy him.
Continuing the Infinite Tsukuyomi would no longer prove independence. It would complete the path constructed by the being who had manipulated him.
Madara's eyes shifted toward the endless fire.
If he released the Ten-Tails, he would lose the power that had finally allowed him to stand near Alaric's summit. He would surrender the body that had restored life beyond death and transformed his chakra into something approaching Hagoromo.
The loss tasted like defeat.
Then Izuna's face rose through memory.
Not as a promised reward... but as the boy who had once fought beside him, who had entrusted him with his eyes, and who would have despised becoming a tool used to purchase Madara's choices.
Madara inhaled through lungs the Ten-Tails had rebuilt.
"I will release it..."
Alaric's attention returned to his face.
Madara continued before suspicion could interrupt him. "...The Infinite Tsukuyomi is finished."
The statement felt heavier than any technique he had used.
It severed the future he had spent decades constructing. It denied Black Zetsu's final purpose and left Madara without the certainty he had once drawn from the Stone Tablet.
The emptiness that followed did not feel peaceful... it felt honest.
Alaric's hand remained on his shoulder.
"And Izuna?"
Madara's expression hardened.
"I will not accept his life as payment."
"That wasn't the question."
Madara's eyes narrowed.
Alaric regarded him calmly.
"You can abandon the plan because you choose to abandon it. You can release the Ten-Tails because keeping it will destroy you and the fragments inside it. Those choices do not require payment."
Madara's fingers loosened from Alaric's sleeve.
"If you still want Izuna restored afterward, ask."
Suspicion returned immediately.
"You would revive him without the bargain?"
"I offered a bargain because I needed a decision quickly."
Alaric's gaze flickered toward the pale limbs emerging from Madara's body.
"You made the decision without accepting the price. That changes the situation."
Madara stared at him.
"You would grant something so valuable without claiming anything in return."
"I didn't say that."
The old sharpness returned to Madara's eyes.
Alaric's mouth curved faintly.
"You will owe me a favor."
"..."
"..."
"A favor..."
"Yes."
"What kind?"
"I'll decide later."
Madara's glare intensified.
"That is a chain with its length concealed."
"Then refuse it," The answer came lightly, but Alaric's gaze remained serious. "Izuna's resurrection will not determine whether I help you survive tonight. The offer remains available after this ends. You may inspect the technique, verify the spiritual link, and decide when you are no longer being torn apart by an ancient monster."
Madara's jaw shifted. "Proof first."
Hearing this, Alaric raised one brow.
"I will release the Ten-Tails," Madara said. "I will abandon the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Before I permit you to invoke whatever technique you claim surpasses Rinne Tensei, I will witness proof that Izuna's soul can still be reached."
The demand carried none of the desperation he felt.
Alaric considered it for a moment, weighing the request in silence.
Reaching Izuna would not require the complete activation of Shinsei Tensei. Madara's Eternal Mangekyō chakra carried a spiritual imprint inherited from his brother's eyes, strengthened by decades of use and the transformation of those eyes into the Rinnegan. That connection could serve as a path toward the dead.
Revealing the search carried risks.
Hagoromo already sensed that Alaric's soul did not belong cleanly to this world. A technique reaching beyond death might expose more of Shinsei Tensei's structure than Alaric preferred. Madara's Rinnegan would observe every visible layer, and his intelligence made partial knowledge dangerous.
Alaric could limit the demonstration.
A single response... enough to prove Izuna remained reachable without revealing how Alaric intended to restore him.
"Agreed," Alaric said.
Madara's eyes sharpened.
"You will show me now."
"No."
As the Ten-Tails struck the seal, Madara's body folded around the impact.
The malformed arms behind him tore wider, dragging a section of pale torso through his back. A vast mouth began forming above Madara's shoulder, its teeth emerging from chakra while the creature forced its upper body between the layers of his existence.
The jinchūriki seal split.
A white fracture crossed Madara's abdomen.
Then it opened.
The incomplete Ten-Tails roared through him.
"RRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!"
The sound belonged to beast and man together.
Madara's body arched as an enormous mass of chakra erupted from his spine. The escaping creature did not emerge in its complete form. Its head forced itself outward first, followed by shoulders woven from the fragments of the Gedo Mazō and the stolen chakra of the nine tailed beasts.
The fire dimension reacted; flames rushed toward the exposed beast.
Alaric lifted his free hand and the surrounding fire bent away.
The reduction in heat did not extinguish the dimension, but it created a temporary hollow around Madara and the escaping Ten-Tails. Without Phoenix Sage Mode, controlling the realm required far more concentration. The Rinne-Sharingan rotated while Alaric imposed his authority upon the nearest currents and prevented them from consuming the beast's exposed chakra.
Madara fell against his grip.
His living body began collapsing as the Ten-Tails withdrew the life force used during Rinne Tensei. Skin paled. Muscles shrank across his shoulders. The incomplete horn cracked near its base as the power sustaining it pulled backward through the ruined seal.
Alaric's fingers tightened upon him.
"Do not fight the release."
Madara's Rinnegan glared upward.
"If I stop… it tears out my soul."
"It's already doing that."
Black fūinjutsu spread from Alaric's palm across Madara's shoulder.
The script passed over his chest, circled the damaged seal, and divided into three layers. One wrapped around Madara's living body. Another reached the remaining Edo framework. The third enclosed his soul, preventing the Ten-Tails from dragging all three states apart as it escaped.
Madara felt the separation stabilize.
"You prepared this."
"I prepare for everything."
The Ten-Tails pulled harder.
A second head attempted to form beside the first, produced by competing fragments that could not decide upon a stable shape. One carried a single Rinne-Sharingan eye. The other possessed a blank face split by an enormous mouth.
Alaric's expression tightened.
The incomplete beast could not be allowed to separate chaotically. If the stolen fragments tore away from one another inside the fire dimension, several might lose the identities and resonances connecting them to the complete tailed beasts.
He needed to preserve each current.
Nine sealing rings appeared behind Alaric.
They spread through the hollow he had formed, each carrying a different pattern derived from Hagoromo's original division of the Ten-Tails. Alaric had seen the structure only hours earlier within the shared subconscious, yet the logic had already become part of his fūinjutsu.
The rings rotated.
One responded to sand and wind, another glowed with blue flame, and a third carried water dense enough to resemble armor.
The remaining rings awakened in sequence, finding the fragments associated with each tailed beast and preventing them from collapsing into the Gedo Mazō's shell.
Madara watched the pattern shift.
His Rinnegan narrowed slightly, not in recognition, but in calculation... trying to understand what he was seeing. The structure was familiar in the way a language half-remembered from another life was familiar, yet the logic behind it refused to settle into anything stable.
"…"
The escaping Ten-Tails thrashed, its half-formed arm striking Alaric as he lifted his forearm.
The collision drove him several feet through the fire, though his hand never left Madara's shoulder. Pain spread through his bones. Without Phoenix Sage Mode reinforcing his body, the incomplete beast's raw strength carried far greater weight.
Alaric exhaled slowly as the broken forearm straightened beneath Eros.
The Ten-Tails struck again.
A black receiver shot from Madara's palm and pierced the creature's wrist.
"You said not to fight the release."
"I am preventing it from killing us before it finishes."
As the beast's mouth widened, a Tailed Beast Ball began forming between its teeth, and Alaric's Rinne-Sharingan fixed upon it.
"Gakidō."
The forming sphere twisted away from the Ten-Tails' mouth and entered the absorption seal opening over Alaric's palm. Its chakra flooded his pathways with enough force to make the earlier Truth-Seeking Orbs feel delicate.
His shoulder jerked and blood ran from both nostrils.
He maintained the seal until the Tailed Beast Ball vanished.
Madara watched him through a haze of pain.
"You are weaker."
"My Sage Mode ended."
"And you remain here...?"
"Yes."
The Ten-Tails tore another section of itself through the seal.
Madara's heartbeat faltered.
The life force sustaining his restored body began following the beast outward.
Alaric immediately changed the fūinjutsu around his chest. The bodily anchor drew upon Madara's own remaining chakra instead of the Ten-Tails, while the spiritual layer sealed the residue of Rinne Tensei inside his soul.
Madara gasped.
For the first time since becoming the jinchūriki, his body felt small.
Mortal.
The absence of the Ten-Tails exposed every weakness beneath the transformation. His resurrected life had been purchased through the beast's vitality, and removing it threatened to reclaim the payment.
Alaric understood the problem.
Madara would survive only if the life created through Rinne Tensei became self-sustaining before the Ten-Tails completed its escape.
The process would require a substitute source.
Alaric placed his other hand against Madara's chest.
Eros could restore Alaric's own ideal condition. It did not naturally belong to another person. Yet its underlying principle... the recognition of a body's highest stable state... could guide a seal designed to preserve the living form Madara had already achieved.
Golden characters appeared beneath Alaric's palm.
Madara's heart struck once.
Then it stopped.
Alaric narrowed his eyes as he forced the formula deeper. "Do not die yet."
Madara's mouth curved weakly despite the pain. "You offered… my brother…"
"I noticed."
"You would look foolish if I died before answering."
"That is the primary concern."
The faint humor lasted no longer than a breath as Madara's heart remained still.
The Ten-Tails then pulled.
Alaric's seal found the memory of Madara's restored heartbeat inside his soul and imposed it upon the living body.
LUB-DUB...
Madara inhaled sharply.
The incomplete beast roared as the final restraints began failing.
Its upper body emerged completely, vast enough to dwarf both men while the remainder remained compressed inside the broken seal. The nine identification rings tightened around its chakra, keeping the fragments distinct while preventing the Gedo Mazō's shell from swallowing them.
Alaric's Rinne-Sharingan bled.
A dark line crossed his cheek.
He could suppress the beast.
He could preserve Madara.
He could protect the tailed-beast fragments.
Doing all three without Phoenix Sage Mode demanded precision that left no room for another mistake.
Madara felt the seals surrounding his soul stabilize.
He released the black receivers binding the Ten-Tails, then the creature surged outward.
For the first time, Madara stopped fighting to keep it.
Alaric looked toward him.
Madara's face had lost much of the altered armor. His horn was crumbling. The pale chakra robes had thinned until living skin showed beneath them.
His Rinnegan remained clear.
"I release it," Madara said.
The words carried through the roar.
"The Infinite Tsukuyomi ends here."
Alaric nodded once.
The Ten-Tails ripped the seal open completely.
White light filled the fire dimension.
Its enormous body exploded outward from Madara's back, dragging roots, chakra, and fragments of the Gedo Mazō through the rupture while Alaric's nine rings closed around the separate tailed-beast resonances.
Madara's body went limp beneath Alaric's hands.
The beast's eye opened above them... its roar swallowed the endless fire.
