Land of Frost — Northern Wilderness

"Let's do it."

The casualness with which Alaric said the words did nothing to lessen their weight.

Madara stood beside Izuna's coffin while snow moved through the ruined wilderness around them, gathering along the blackened earth before the wind carried it onward. The crater left by his battle with Alaric stretched far beyond sight, filled with broken stone, vitrified ground, and mountains whose silhouettes no longer resembled what they had been only hours earlier.

Somewhere beyond those ruins, Obito's original body had just received the memories of his shadow clone.

Madara knew it... and so did Alaric... neither man intended to allow the resurrection taking place here to become anyone else's concern.

Alaric crouched, his right palm settling against the frozen ground.

Madara's Rinnegan immediately sharpened as chakra flowed downward.

There was no explosion of power.

No visible dome rose into the sky.

Instead, thin lines of fūinjutsu moved beneath the snow with frightening speed.

They traveled away from Alaric in every direction, slipping beneath shattered mountains, sinking through underground stone, and crossing the edges of the immense crater until Madara could no longer follow their physical reach.

The formula continued growing.

A second layer formed above them without becoming visible to ordinary sight, followed by a third, then dozens more.

Madara watched different functions stack upon one another.

Sensory suppression, chakra masking, space-time interference, dōjutsu obstruction, sound isolation, and spiritual concealment.

Even natural energy itself began curving around the perimeter instead of passing through it in a way that might reveal unusual activity to a sufficiently skilled sage.

Madara's brow slowly tightened.

"You intend to conceal a resurrection."

Alaric kept his palm against the earth as another sequence of characters spread beneath his fingers.

"I intend to conceal this resurrection."

Madara looked toward the horizon.

"If Obito searches through Kamui?"

"He finds empty terrain."

"With the Rinnegan?"

"He sees whatever chakra would naturally be here."

"Sensory ninjutsu?"

"Nothing."

"A barrier specialist?"

Alaric glanced up at him."They get a headache."

Madara stared as Alaric smiled faintly, his gaze returning to the ground while the final layer settled.

For one strange instant, Madara felt the world outside them disappear.

The mountains remained visible. Snow still crossed the wilderness. Wind continued moving over his hair and robes.

Yet everything beyond the barrier suddenly felt impossibly distant.

If the Five Kage stood several hundred meters away, Madara suspected they would look toward this place and find nothing worth investigating. If a sensor specifically searched for him, the chakra signature returned would belong to an empty section of frozen wasteland. Even space-time perception seemed to slide around them as though the sealed region occupied a position adjacent to reality rather than completely inside it.

Alaric lifted his hand and nodded his head in satisfaction. "Good enough."

Madara looked across the enormous hidden perimeter. "Good enough?"

"I could make it stronger."

"Why have you not?"

"Because then I'd be showing off."

Madara's expression flattened.

Alaric, on the other hand, just stood.

The cigar between his fingers had nearly burned down to its end. He looked at it, took one final drag, then extinguished it between two fingers before slipping what remained into a small spatial seal.

His attention shifted toward the coffin, the humor leaving his face in an instant... something Madara noticed immediately.

Alaric stepped closer and laid one hand against the edge.

"Open it."

Madara did so without answering as the lid moved aside.

Izuna's bones rested exactly where they had before.

The younger Uchiha had been reduced by time to a carefully arranged skeleton preserved upon dark funerary cloth. Sealing techniques had prevented the remains from scattering or degrading beyond recognition, although decades had taken everything softer than bone.

Madara stared down at them.

He had opened this coffin many times before... but never for this.

Alaric reached inside, his fingers stopping just above Izuna's sternum.

Madara's breathing slowed.

"What happens first?"

Alaric did not look away from the body.

"I make sure he has something worth coming back to."

Madara's eyes narrowed slightly.

Before he could ask what that meant, Alaric placed two fingers against one of Izuna's ribs.

The world around the coffin fell into absolute silence.

Snowflakes stopped above the open lid.

Madara's hair froze halfway through its movement in the wind.

Even the microscopic vibrations inside the coffin seemed to cease.

His Rinnegan widened.

Something had changed that was not chakra.

Alaric's fūinjutsu appeared.

A circular formula formed beneath Izuna's remains, but Madara recognized almost none of its architecture. The symbols possessed the precision of sealing arts, yet they did not behave like ordinary seals. They were not restraining chakra, containing matter, or binding a spirit.

They seemed to be defining a condition.

A black ring formed around the coffin.

Inside it, twelve smaller marks appeared like measurements upon an invisible clock.

Alaric's eyes narrowed before the ring turned backward.

Madara's breath caught in his throat, refusing to leave his lungs as the bones changed.

At first, the alteration was so subtle that he wondered whether his Rinnegan had deceived him.

Hairline fractures disappeared from Izuna's ribs.

Age-darkened surfaces lightened.

Tiny pieces that had broken away centuries earlier appeared from nowhere and returned to their original positions, joining seamlessly with the larger bones.

Madara leaned closer.

The skeleton was becoming younger... not reconstructing, but reversing.

The distinction struck him with enough force to make his Rinnegan widen further.

The bones did not grow new material; they merely reacquired what they had once possessed.

Centuries of decay retreated as mineral loss reversed itself and weathering vanished.

The skeleton regained the strength it had carried shortly after Izuna's death.

Then the process moved beyond bone.

A faint darkness appeared within the hollow rib cage.

Madara's fingers tightened around the side of the coffin.

What initially looked like shadow thickened into dried remnants of tissue.

Rot returned.

The smell arrived a moment later.

Madara's nostrils flared while Alaric did not react.

The body moved backward through decomposition.

Blackened strips of ancient flesh appeared around the spine and ribs, forming where nothing had existed a heartbeat earlier. Tendons returned to joints. Brittle material thickened around the shoulders. Fragments of long-decayed organs appeared within the torso as discolored masses.

The sight should have been grotesque... and it was, but Madara could not look away.

Centuries were unraveling before him.

The corpse passed backward through every stage nature had inflicted upon it.

Dry tissue softened.

Rotten flesh filled sunken spaces.

The empty abdomen became crowded with organs still damaged by decay.

Dark skin stretched unevenly across newly reconstructed muscles.

Hair returned in loose strands against the funerary cloth.

Madara's heartbeat began accelerating.

"Izuna…"

Alaric's concentration did not shift.

The circular formula rotated backward another measure.

Decay vanished... the smell disappeared first as the rotten flesh brightened.

Black tissue became bruised purple, then red, then healthy.

Muscles filled out along Izuna's limbs as though an invisible sculptor were working beneath the skin. Tendons strengthened. Fingers recovered their shape. Nails returned to clean beds. The chest expanded to the proportions Madara remembered from his brother's youth.

The face changed last.

Madara took one involuntary step toward the coffin.

Cheeks that had collapsed into bone centuries ago rebuilt themselves.

The jaw filled, the lips formed, and the nose recovered its original structure.

Dark hair spilled outward across the cloth, becoming thick and unmistakably Uchiha.

Madara's composure cracked.

He knew that face.

Not from memory distorted by decades, genjutsu, or a dream.

Izuna.

His younger brother lay inside the coffin, young and whole.

Exactly as Madara remembered him shortly before death had begun stripping everything away.

Almost.

Madara's expression changed when he looked at the face more closely.

The eyelids rested over empty sockets.

There were no eyes beneath them.

Alaric noticed his gaze and exhaled calmly, "That's correct."

Madara turned toward him.

"You deliberately left them absent."

"No," Alaric's fingers remained against Izuna's chest. "They weren't in his body at the point I brought him back to."

Madara understood.

The eyes had belonged to him by then because Izuna had already surrendered them.

Whatever Alaric had just done had not fabricated an idealized version of Izuna.

It had restored the body according to its actual history.

Madara looked down again and saw that his brother's skin possessed warmth.

He could see it through the Rinnegan.

Blood filled the vessels.

Organs were intact.

The heart existed within the chest.

Yet it did not beat.

The lungs did not move.

The body was not alive.

It was simply no longer decayed.

Madara's throat tightened. "What did you do?"

Without answering, Alaric lifted his fingers from Izuna.

The strange circular formula beneath the coffin vanished.

Time resumed as snow fell and wind crossed the barrier again.

Madara stared at the restored corpse.

The dark burial cloth had shifted around Izuna during the reconstruction and now covered him from the waist downward, while Alaric extended a small Wood Release platform beneath the body so it could be lifted from the ancient coffin without disturbing its alignment.

Madara's Rinnegan moved over every inch.

There was no illusion, no transformation technique, and no foreign body wearing Izuna's appearance.

Every cell he could perceive matched the biological signature preserved within the bones.

More disturbing still, the chakra pathways inside the body possessed the exact dormant structure of an Uchiha.

Original.

Madara slowly looked at Alaric. "That was not ordinary fūinjutsu."

"No."

"What technique?"

Alaric gave him a brief glance, "The useful kind."

Madara's eyes narrowed, but Alaric turned back toward Izuna before interrogation could begin.

He would not explain the Hourglass of Samsara. Madara already understood too much.

There was no reason to tell a man who had spent half his existence attempting to overcome death that Alaric possessed an Ascendant-level branch of fūinjutsu capable of governing age, time, and the placement of matter along its own history.

The technique had accomplished exactly what Alaric required.

Izuna's body was not a clone, nor was it rebuilt from interpretation.

It was the original body rewound along its own temporal existence until it reached the condition Alaric selected.

That mattered.

A soul could recognize flesh.

More importantly, it could recognize its own flesh.

Alaric placed his right hand flat against Izuna's sternum, and Madara immediately became still.

The air changed again.

This time, there was no rotating temporal formula.

The chakra gathering beneath Alaric's palm felt different from anything Madara had sensed during their battle.

It was not destructive, which made it more disturbing.

The Rinne-Sharingan opened fully.

Alaric's ordinary chakra moved first, perfectly controlled and unnervingly dense after becoming the Ten-Tails' final jinchūriki. The Gedo Mazō shifted within its prison as the technique formed, but Alaric closed the exchange pathway before the beast could contribute anything.

Phoenix chakra remained isolated.

This technique belonged to Alaric alone... nothing else.

Black and white characters emerged beneath his hand.

They spread over Izuna's chest, moved across his shoulders, and descended along both arms before joining into a complete network surrounding the restored body.

Madara recognized fragments of concepts.

Life, death, identity, return, body, and soul.

Yet the arrangement contradicted every resurrection technique he knew.

There was no sacrifice circle, no human vessel, no invocation of the King of Hell, and no Outer Path construct waiting to exchange the caster's vitality for another life.

Alaric closed his eyes.

"Shinsei... Tensei."

Madara's Rinnegan widened.

The technique activated.

WHUUUUUUUUUUUUM.

Something reached outward, but Madara could not see where.

That disturbed him more than if a portal to the Pure Land had simply opened above them.

Alaric's chakra passed through Izuna's restored body and encountered the biological identity encoded within it. The technique read everything without explanation: cells, lineage, chakra pathways, the residual spiritual imprint left within Madara's transplanted eyes, and the history connecting those things to the soul that had once inhabited the body.

Then the search began.

Alaric's awareness moved beyond ordinary space.

The frozen wilderness disappeared from his perception without his body leaving it.

There was darkness, but not empty darkness.

Distance without direction.

He allowed Shinsei Tensei to follow the signature.

Izuna Uchiha.

Not the memory of him inside Madara, not the chakra inherited through transplanted eyes, not an Edo Tensei approximation reconstructed through knowledge of the dead... only the original soul.

Alaric searched while Madara remained fixed on the physical world, watching for any sign of change.

Nothing happened.

Five seconds passed.

Then ten.

Madara's fingers curled.

Alaric remained perfectly still.

The markings across Izuna's body glowed faintly, but the chest remained unmoving.

Madara had stood before armies without impatience.

He had waited decades for the Rinnegan to awaken.

He had remained attached to the Gedo Mazō while age reduced his body to a husk because he believed the future would eventually arrive.

Twenty seconds beside Izuna's motionless body felt longer.

"What is happening?"

"..."

Alaric did not answer.

Madara took a step closer.

The impulse to seize him appeared and died immediately. Interrupting a resurrection halfway through would be idiotic even by standards Madara rarely bothered acknowledging.

His Rinnegan shifted toward Izuna.

Nothing.

Madara's jaw tightened.

"You said you could reach him."

Silence answered.

"..."

"..."

Then Alaric felt it.

A tug.

It was faint... very faint.

Distant beyond any physical measurement, yet distinct enough that Shinsei Tensei recognized it immediately.

Alaric's eyes opened.

Madara saw the change.

"You found him."

It was not a question, but he at least would have appreciated an answer.

Alaric, however, did not respond as his hand pressed more firmly against Izuna's sternum and the resurrection formula brightened.

Far beyond the boundary separating the living world from the dead, Shinsei Tensei caught hold of the spiritual signature that matched the body beneath Alaric's palm.

There... Izuna.

The soul resisted for less than an instant.

Not consciously, because it was the boundary of death itself that resisted.

Alaric's chakra surged.

THUUUUUUUUUM.

Snow blasted outward from the coffin, whipping Madara's hair behind him.

The anti-detection barrier absorbed the spiritual pressure before even a fragment could escape beyond its perimeter.

Alaric pulled... and something entered the world.

Madara saw it.

His Rinnegan widened so dramatically that the rings seemed to contract around his pupils.

A translucent figure appeared above Izuna's body.

It was only for an instant, Madara alone saw dark hair and a familiar face... the shape of the younger brother he had watched die generations ago.

"Izuna!"

The soul didn't answer him and simply descended, and the restored body reacted before contact as every dormant chakra pathway illuminated.

Alaric guided the spirit downward rather than forcing it.

This was the critical point.

A reconstructed body could reject a soul because its spiritual identity did not perfectly match.

Izuna's body did not.

The instant his soul touched it, recognition occurred at every level.

Original flesh, bones, chakra network, and biological history.

The body accepted him because it had never belonged to anyone else.

The soul accepted the body because, despite centuries separating them, it was still home.

Alaric closed his fingers slightly against Izuna's chest.

"Connect."

The translucent form collapsed into the body.

THUUUUM.

Izuna's back arched, and Madara froze.

The heart moved... one weak contraction, then another.

LUB-DUB.

Madara stared.

LUB-DUB.

Blood moved through Izuna's arteries.

His fingers twitched against the cloth.

The lungs remained empty for another terrible second.

Then Izuna inhaled.

"HAAAAAAAH!"

The breath entered violently, his chest expanding.

Madara took a step backward as though struck.

Izuna coughed, a living cough.

His throat contracted. His fingers curled. Muscles that had been dead for generations reacted to cold air touching newly awakened skin.

Madara wanted to speak, to say something... anything... but the words would not come. He could not.

The man who had fought Hashirama Senju until entire landscapes changed around them, who had awakened the Eternal Mangekyō, acquired the Rinnegan, manipulated death, controlled the Gedo Mazō, and briefly carried the Ten-Tails within himself stood beside a coffin with his lips slightly parted and no idea what expression belonged on his face.

Izuna's chakra ignited... small compared with Madara's, yet enormous by ordinary standards.

Uchiha.

Unmistakably Uchiha.

Unmistakably his.

Madara's breathing stopped.

There was no Edo Tensei ash across the skin, no cracks, no corpse-like sclera, no binding tags hidden inside the skull, and no sacrifice lay beneath Izuna's flesh.

Madara could hear the heartbeat.

Could see blood moving through living vessels.

Could sense the soul occupying the body rather than being chained to it.

Alaric slowly removed his hand as the black and white resurrection markings faded, and Shinsei Tensei ended.

No second body died in exchange.

Alaric remained standing.

His chakra reserves had dropped, but only enough to irritate him.

Madara looked from Izuna to Alaric, then back again.

For perhaps the first time in his existence, Madara Uchiha looked completely, utterly lost.

Izuna's brow moved as his empty eyelids tightened.

Madara leaned forward without realizing he had moved.

One hand rose slightly, but he stopped himself before touching his brother.

Izuna inhaled again.

His head shifted against the restored cloth.

The muscles around his empty eyes reacted instinctively as consciousness returned to a body that remembered sight even though the eyes themselves were absent.

His lips parted as Madara's heart hammered.

Izuna opened his eyeless lids.

"…Huh?"
