Chapter 547: What a Master Is Supposed to Create (Patreon)
Content
Kenway Compound — Main Residence — Konohagakure
The door leading toward the eastern garden slid shut behind Izuna and Itachi, leaving the sitting room noticeably quieter.
Madara watched the doorway for several seconds.
He could still sense his brother moving farther into the compound alongside Itachi, and although Izuna had explicitly asked to speak with the younger Uchiha alone, some deeply ingrained part of Madara remained tempted to follow simply because Izuna had only been alive for a few hours.
He resisted... barely.
Kushina noticed his attention lingering there, though she chose not to comment as she refilled Minato's cup. Sasuke had become quieter since Itachi left, while Naruto kept glancing between the garden door and Madara as though uncertain which unresolved situation deserved more concern.
Haku, meanwhile, sat almost exactly as he had before.
Calm and straight-backed.
One hand rested loosely against his knee while the other held his tea. If Madara's passive chakra pressure bothered him, there was no evidence of it in his breathing.
Madara's Rinnegan settled on him.
Haku noticed immediately and lowered his cup while Madara continued staring.
Naruto caught the exchange and frowned. "What?"
Madara ignored him.
His attention had already returned to the moment on the rooftop.
He remembered sensing Haku elsewhere within the compound before the young man appeared beside Itachi. There had been no recognizable Hiraishin distortion, no Kamui transition, and no normal Body Flicker sequence for Madara's eyes to follow.
Haku had simply moved.
For a fraction of a moment, Madara's perception had failed to place him between one position and another.
That alone was unusual.
Madara had fought Tobirama Senju and learned to distinguish instantaneous space-time movement from ordinary speed before most modern shinobi villages existed. He had spent years battling Hashirama, survived combat at velocities that rendered ordinary shinobi incapable of following exchanges, and had only recently fought Alaric while the man layered impossible physical acceleration with techniques Madara still did not completely understand.
Fast shinobi did not impress him merely by being fast.
The method mattered... and Haku's method bothered him.
Madara leaned back slightly.
"You."
Haku raised one eyebrow. "Me?"
"What did Alaric teach you?"
The question changed the attention in the room.
Minato looked over with immediate interest.
Kushina paused near the teapot.
Naruto glanced toward Haku, while Sasuke's eyes narrowed slightly.
Haku regarded Madara for a moment before answering. "That is a very broad question."
"Then narrow it." Madara rested one forearm along the chair. "When you moved to the roof earlier, you did not teleport."
"No."
"You did not use Body Flicker, nor space-time ninjutsu."
"Correct."
Madara's Rinnegan sharpened, "Then what was it?"
Haku placed his cup onto the table.
Instead of answering immediately, he considered how much the question actually required.
Madara noticed the hesitation in Haku's silence. "You are deciding what not to tell me."
"Yes."
Naruto blinked at the blunt admission.
Madara's mouth curved faintly.
"Good."
"I can tell you about my training," Haku said, his expression remaining composed, "but I will not tell you everything about Sensei."
"Because he ordered you not to?"
"No."
That answer interested Madara more.
Haku continued, "Because some things are his to explain."
Madara studied him.
Loyalty without obvious compulsion... again.
He had seen the same pattern in the way Haku reacted to Alaric's absence. Concern existed, yet there was none of the desperate dependence Madara associated with people whose identities had been swallowed by stronger personalities.
"What were you before him?" Madara asked.
Haku's eyes lowered briefly. "A weapon."
The answer silenced even Naruto.
Madara's expression did not change. "For whom?"
"Zabuza Momochi."
Madara knew the name, though it meant little to him... just another so-called "Demon of the Hidden Mist," the kind of title given to small fry who made a name for themselves in a backwater era of shinobi history. One of the Seven Swordsmen, nothing more worth lingering on.
Haku continued before Madara could assume too much.
"Not because Zabuza placed a seal on me or forced me to follow him. I chose it."
Madara's brow shifted; Haku folded his hands loosely.
"My mother carried the Yuki bloodline. In the Land of Water, bloodlines were feared after years of civil conflict. When my father discovered what my mother and I were, he killed her and tried to kill me."
Kushina's expression softened.
Haku spoke without dramatizing the memory.
"I survived. Eventually, Zabuza found me. At the time, I had already decided that possessing power meant very little unless someone needed it. Zabuza needed a weapon, and I needed a reason to believe my existence had value."
Madara watched him closely, "You attached your worth to usefulness."
"Yes."
"That is common among shinobi."
"That does not make it healthy."
Madara's mouth twitched.
Haku glanced toward the tea before continuing.
"Sensei did not begin by giving me stronger Ice Release."
Madara raised a brow.
"He brought Zabuza and me to Konoha. He secured asylum for both of us, even though Zabuza had every reason to expect imprisonment or execution."
Minato nodded faintly. He knew that history.
"Eventually," Haku continued, "Zabuza told me something I needed to hear from him specifically. He released me from the obligation I had created in my own mind. He stopped allowing me to define myself as his tool."
Madara's eyes narrowed. "And Alaric?"
"Offered to train me."
"As another weapon."
"No," Haku met Madara's gaze. "As his disciple."
The distinction sounded almost trivial, but Madara knew better.
He had taken Obito and shaped him around a goal.
Black Zetsu had shaped Madara around another.
People liked giving control cleaner names... destiny, duty, love, purpose... but the result was often the same.
Madara asked, "And you believe the word made a difference?"
"No... what he did afterward made the difference," Haku's answer came without hesitation. "He never asked me to surrender judgment in exchange for training."
Madara became quiet.
Haku continued, "If I disagreed, he expected me to explain why. If I made a decision, he expected me to understand the consequences. If I failed, he corrected me. If I succeeded, he raised the standard."
A small smile appeared.
"Usually immediately."
Naruto muttered, "That sounds like him."
Haku glanced at him.
"It is."
Madara returned to the original question: "How long did he train you?"
"The first continuous period lasted approximately eleven months."
"Continuous?"
"We traveled."
"Where?"
"Minor nations, border regions, places most major villages only remember when they need somewhere to march through."
Madara recognized the criticism beneath the calm wording.
Haku leaned back slightly.
"We hunted missing-nin, dismantled bandit groups, disrupted slave routes, crossed regions where the weather alone could kill unprepared travelers, studied medicinal plants, cooked for ourselves, trained, and then trained more."
"You hunted while training."
"Sensei dislikes separating preparation from reality."
Madara almost smiled. That, too, sounded familiar. "What did he change first?"
"My fundamentals."
Madara's brow rose.
Haku continued, "My chakra control was already good. It was not good enough for him."
Minato smiled faintly at that.
Haku ignored him.
"He refined my Water Release and Wind Release until I could use both more efficiently under pressure, then forced me to stop treating Ice Release as a small collection of inherited techniques."
"Your mirrors," Madara said.
Haku nodded.
"Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals were the foundation. Sensei wanted the principle rather than the jutsu."
Madara became more attentive as Haku lifted one hand and formed a tiny crystalline plate above his palm.
"He made me ask what the mirrors actually allowed me to do. Reflection, redirection, movement, line-of-sight manipulation, environmental control."
The ice rotated.
"So I learned to create smaller mirrors without constructing the entire array, place reflective surfaces at unusual angles, move through them while preserving momentum, and use frozen terrain as part of the same network."
Madara watched the crystal.
"Localized weather?"
"Yes."
"Blizzards?"
"Yes."
"Internal freezing?"
Haku's eyes flickered.
Madara smiled faintly. "Your chakra control makes the possibility obvious."
"Yes."
The crystal dissolved.
"I can introduce cold through contact, water vapor, existing moisture, or sufficiently fine ice structures. Against weaker opponents, the damage can begin internally before they understand what happened."
Naruto grimaced, "That sounds awful."
Haku looked toward him. "It is intended to."
Madara's interest deepened. "And your sword?"
"My Kusanagi."
Sasuke's eyes moved toward Haku at the name.
Haku continued, "Sensei taught me swordsmanship as another extension of movement rather than something separate from ninjutsu. The blade gives me a stable line through which I can channel chakra, control engagement distance, and create ice structures without interrupting close combat."
"Fūinjutsu?"
"Yes."
"How advanced?"
Haku considered that carefully.
"Advanced enough that I can disrupt or restrain certain chakra systems, create layered barriers, store equipment, seal targets, and interfere with techniques that depend upon externally maintained command pathways."
Madara's gaze sharpened. "Edo Tensei."
Haku nodded once.
"I developed methods capable of disrupting command pathways if I can properly establish the seal."
Madara gave a quiet hum, acknowledging that was not trivial.
Kabuto's Edo Tensei had demonstrated how difficult it was to interfere with a perfected reincarnation technique once the bodies were active.
Madara tapped one finger against the armrest.
"You still have not answered the speed."
Haku's mouth curved faintly as he said, "I wondered how long you would tolerate the rest."
"Not much longer."
Minato almost smiled.
Haku straightened slightly.
"Sensei started with reaction training."
"What kind?"
"Metal projectiles."
Madara waited.
"At first, ordinary speed. Then faster."
"How fast?"
"Supersonic."
Naruto stared.
Kushina looked at Haku despite already knowing enough of his training to stop being surprised by Alaric's methods.
Madara's expression remained flat. "Only supersonic?"
Haku's eyes narrowed slightly.
"Eventually he curved them."
That alone was enough to draw a reaction from Madara as he leaned forward. "Mid-flight?"
"Yes."
"With what?"
"I am not explaining his method."
Madara's mouth curved as he said, "Vulcan."
Haku did not answer; he did not need to.
Madara had already seen Alaric manipulate metal on scales that rendered tiny projectiles almost insultingly easy.
Haku continued, "I could not rely upon watching the projectile itself because the final line could change after launch. Sensei forced me to read the movement around it."
"Pressure."
"Air displacement."
"Chakra."
"When applicable."
"Intent?"
Haku nodded. "He blindfolded me after I became too comfortable."
Madara gave a short chuckle. "Of course."
"For weeks, I trained without sight. I learned to read footsteps through the ground, minute changes in breathing, heartbeat acceleration, weight distribution before a movement, chakra fluctuations preceding ninjutsu, and hostile intention when someone could not completely suppress it."
Minato's attention had become fully engaged.
"That explains how you move through crowded combat without looking."
Haku nodded once, explaining that the point was not to replace eyesight but to ensure losing sight did not make him helpless.
Madara's gaze moved briefly toward the garden where Izuna had gone.
The parallel was impossible to miss.
Haku finally answered his original question: the movement principle is called Zero Friction.
Madara repeated the name quietly.
Haku placed one foot flat against the floor.
"It is not literal in the scientific sense at every stage, but the principle is simple. Reduce resistance from the terrain and surrounding air as much as possible while preserving acceleration."
Madara's eyes narrowed. "You manipulate the contact surface."
"Ice helps."
A thin layer formed beneath Haku's sandal.
"The ground stops resisting me in the normal way. I can accelerate across an ice path with very little loss, then create new surfaces ahead of myself."
"And the air?"
Haku hesitated for a brief moment.
Madara caught it, "Another secret?"
"Partially."
Madara accepted that.
Haku continued, "Enough Wind Release and precise chakra control can reduce the drag I experience during movement. Once acceleration builds, my mirrors and ice surfaces redirect momentum rather than forcing me to stop and accelerate again."
Madara understood, and his expression changed.
"You are not moving instantaneously; the mirror changes your vector while preserving most of your velocity, allowing you to store speed between directional changes."
"Exactly."
Minato's eyes sharpened with appreciation. "It resembles teleportation because there is almost no visible deceleration."
Haku nodded.
Madara smiled.
Now it made sense.
Not space-time ninjutsu, nor a trick of perception.
Physical motion pushed toward an absurd boundary through environmental manipulation, reduced resistance, and preserved momentum.
"You built a movement system around Ice Release."
"Sensei did first."
"You perfected it."
"I am still improving it."
Madara's smile widened slightly as that answer pleased him.
Then Haku added, "The taijutsu helped."
Madara's smile disappeared.
"What taijutsu?"
Haku stood, and the room immediately became more attentive, although his chakra remained calm.
He moved into a loose stance.
One foot angled, shoulders relaxed, lead hand positioned deceptively low.
Madara's Rinnegan widened by a fraction.
Haku shifted his weight.
The transition was familiar... too familiar.
Madara slowly stood.
Naruto looked between them. "What?"
Madara ignored him.
Haku demonstrated a short sequence without striking anything. His hips rotated first, followed by a flowing elbow path that could become a backfist, palm strike, or grappling entry depending upon the opponent's response. The rear foot slid into position for immediate forward pressure while the shoulders remained loose enough to disguise the next attack.
Madara's expression hardened.
"Again."
Haku repeated it as Madara stepped closer.
"That second transition."
Haku performed it more slowly.
Madara's eyes narrowed. "Where did he teach you that?"
"During the journey."
"That is not what I asked."
Haku lowered his hands.
Madara stared at him, "That is mine."
The room became completely silent.
Sasuke's Sharingan activated instinctively.
Naruto looked confused.
Minato understood faster, "Your fighting style."
Madara did not look away from Haku.
"The entry, the shoulder rotation, the false retreat before re-engagement. That is not merely Uchiha taijutsu." His voice lowered. "That is how I fight."
Haku nodded. "Yes."
Madara's Rinnegan sharpened. "You knew."
"Sensei told me the foundation came from an exceptional Uchiha combat style."
"Did he give you my name?"
"Eventually."
Madara laughed once without humor.
"How?"
Haku remained silent.
Madara stepped closer, "Alaric was born generations after my supposed death."
"Yes."
"He knew my personal taijutsu well enough to reproduce it."
"Yes."
"Not clan forms."
"No."
"My style."
Haku met his gaze. "Yes."
Madara's chakra pressure increased without conscious intent.
The teacups trembled.
Naruto straightened.
Kushina's chains stirred faintly beneath her sleeves.
Minato watched Madara carefully.
Haku did not move.
Madara asked, "Where did he learn it?"
"I do not know."
That was true. Madara studied him for a moment longer, but there was no deception in Haku's chakra... only certainty of ignorance, and Madara could tell.
"What else does he know about me?"
Haku's expression became almost apologetic.
"More than I am going to discuss."
Madara's eyes narrowed, "You are very comfortable refusing me."
"Sensei encouraged independent judgment."
A pause followed, then Madara chuckled as the pressure eased. "Of course he did."
Haku resumed his seat.
Madara remained standing another moment before doing the same.
"How did he alter it for you?"
"I am lighter than you."
Madara gave him a flat look, "That is obvious."
"My center of gravity is different, my reach is shorter, and my fighting style uses Ice Release in ways yours does not. Sensei changed the entries so that I could use faster angular shifts rather than relying upon the same amount of forward pressure."
Haku lifted two fingers, adding, "I also freeze through contact."
Madara's brow rose.
"Every strike?"
"Not always enough to damage immediately."
Haku explained, "A palm strike can reduce temperature in muscle tissue. A block can freeze moisture along the skin. Repeated contact accumulates. An opponent may believe the first few exchanges were harmless until movement begins slowing."
Madara smiled. "Cruel."
"Efficient."
"Well... that's just a lenient word for cruel."
Haku lowered his hand.
"Zero Friction lets me enter and disengage quickly. The taijutsu ensures that each contact changes the next exchange."
Madara now understood why Haku had become dangerous enough to earn a reputation beyond ordinary S-rank shinobi.
"How many strong opponents have you killed?"
Haku's expression changed slightly.
"I do not count my reputation by corpses."
"That was not the question."
"No."
Madara's mouth twitched.
Haku continued, "Kakuzu was among the more difficult opponents."
Madara knew the name.
"The Akatsuki immortal."
"Yes."
"You killed him?"
"I defeated him."
Haku did not decorate the statement.
Madara recognized the difference.
"Sasori?"
Haku nodded.
"The puppet master."
"How?"
"By denying him the kind of battle he wanted."
Madara waited as Haku explained only enough to answer.
"I froze puppet joints, controlled the battlefield, interrupted poison delivery where possible, and forced his real core into positions where he could not hide behind numbers."
Sasuke's expression became thoughtful.
Haku added, "Against opponents who depend upon layered weapons, overwhelming them faster is often less useful than making the layers stop functioning."
Madara nodded faintly.
A strategist, not merely a prodigy with a powerful bloodline.
"The Raikage knows you."
Haku's eyes shifted as he said, "He acknowledged me after I evacuated wounded shinobi during a battlefield collapse when you invaded the Kage Summit."
"Speed again."
"Yes."
"I was too busy to notice... how many?"
"Enough."
Madara smiled.
"You dislike boasting."
"I dislike wasting time."
That answer sounded enough like Alaric that Minato nearly laughed.
Madara leaned back and studied Haku for several seconds before speaking. "The Ice Devil."
Haku gave no visible reaction.
"That is what they call you."
"One of the names."
"You dislike that too?"
"I do not particularly care."
Madara considered him. "What did Alaric do when people started calling you that?"
Haku's mouth curved faintly. "He laughed."
Naruto snorted. "That sounds right."
"He said it was dramatic."
Madara actually smiled. Then his expression became serious again. "You said he fought you for hours."
Haku nodded.
"Controlled training."
"How controlled?"
"For him?"
Madara waited.
"Very."
A quiet laugh escaped Minato before he could stop it.
Madara's brows rose.
Haku elaborated, "Sensei scaled himself to what I needed. Sometimes that meant forcing me into exhaustion. Sometimes it meant allowing a technique to work once so I would learn why it would fail against someone who had already seen it."
"And when you caught up?"
"He changed the conditions."
Madara understood immediately.
Weight, terrain, visibility, numbers, chakra restrictions, and different ranges.
Alaric had not trained Haku toward one benchmark.
He had denied the boy the comfort of believing a benchmark was final.
Madara's gaze settled on Haku for a long moment.
Then he asked a different question. "What was his greatest lesson?"
Haku looked at him.
Naruto expected an answer involving Ice Release.
Sasuke expected combat.
Minato suspected otherwise.
Haku remained silent for several seconds before speaking.
"That becoming useful to someone is not the same thing as having a reason to live."
Madara's expression changed.
Haku's hands rested loosely together.
"I used to believe my value was determined by whether Zabuza needed me. If he needed a weapon, then being the best weapon I could become felt like purpose."
His eyes lowered.
"Sensei taught me that usefulness can be part of a relationship without becoming the entire reason you exist."
Madara said nothing.
Haku continued, "He also taught me that a disciple is supposed to become capable of making decisions without the master standing behind him."
The room had grown very quiet.
"If every important choice I make requires Alaric Jonathan Kenway to tell me what is right, then he failed to teach me."
Madara's fingers stopped against the armrest.
That sentence struck closer than Haku could know.
Or perhaps Haku knew more than Madara assumed.
Black Zetsu had built a path and persuaded Madara it was destiny.
Madara had built a path and placed Obito upon it.
Neither relationship had been designed to produce independence.
They had been designed to produce continuation.
Haku looked directly at him. "Sensei wants me capable of disagreeing with him."
Madara's brow rose.
"Have you?"
"Yes."
"And?"
"We argued."
"That was all?"
Haku almost smiled. "What were you expecting?"
Madara thought about it. "Most powerful men dislike being challenged."
"Sensei dislikes stupidity more."
Naruto laughed.
Kushina covered her smile with her cup.
Even Madara chuckled before looking at Haku differently.
The young man sitting before him possessed enough speed to briefly escape Madara's immediate tracking, an Ice Release developed beyond the limitations of ordinary inherited techniques, advanced fūinjutsu, refined sensory abilities, swordsmanship, battlefield experience, and a modified version of Madara's own taijutsu.
Yet none of those things explained the loyalty.
That came from somewhere else.
Alaric had given Haku power without making himself the reason Haku possessed it.
Madara understood the difference now because he had spent too much of his life doing the opposite.
He thought of Obito again, a broken boy beneath a collapsed world.
Madara had not asked who Obito might become; he had asked how useful Obito could become to Madara's plan.
His gaze lowered; for once, no defense immediately appeared.
Haku lifted his tea again.
Madara looked toward him, "You still call him Sensei."
"Yes."
"Even now?"
"Yes."
"You are feared across nations."
Haku took a sip. "That has nothing to do with whether he is my teacher."
Madara remained silent.
Haku added, "If I become stronger than him someday, assuming such a thing is possible, he would still be my Sensei."
Madara's mouth curved faintly. "You say that as though you have considered it."
"Every student should want to surpass the teacher in something."
"Now you sound Uchiha."
Haku's expression became dry. "Your taijutsu may be contaminating me."
Naruto burst out laughing.
Madara stared at Haku for one long second.
Then, unexpectedly, he laughed as well.
The sound was quieter than Naruto's, yet genuine.
When it faded, Madara leaned back and looked toward the garden where Izuna and Itachi remained out of sight.
Alaric had defeated him, and that was easy to understand... power recognized power.
Alaric had exposed the lie beneath Infinite Tsukuyomi, broken the Ten-Tails, survived everything Madara offered, and returned Izuna from death. Madara could categorize those things, even if he could not reproduce them.
Haku was different.
Haku represented something no battle had shown.
Alaric did not merely collect techniques.
He did not merely accumulate weapons, bloodlines, dōjutsu, seals, or impossible abilities.
Given enough time, he could take a hunted child who believed his only purpose was to die usefully for another man and shape him into someone the shinobi world feared as the Ice Devil... without demanding ownership of what emerged.
Madara looked at Haku.
The title Sensei suddenly carried considerably more weight than it had an hour ago.
"Hm."
Haku raised a brow.
Madara picked up his tea.
"Perhaps working for him for five years will not be completely intolerable."
Naruto stared. "That might be the nicest thing you've said since you got here."
Madara slowly looked toward Naruto, prompting Naruto to immediately take a drink to avoid the gaze.
Kushina sighed while Minato smiled into his cup.
Haku, however, said nothing.
He merely allowed the faintest smile to reach his face before drinking his tea.
