IT'S DWAGON TIME!!!

I won't lie to you, I had a rough time with this one. To be honest my experience with it could be a result of several different things but I still saw a dwagon so that was nice! Let me know what you thought about this one. I personally felt like I had more fun with the first movie BUT I did also watch that on the weekend and not on the worst day of the week cough MONDAY.

Anyways, hope you enjoy and we have one more to go!

Xenoprism

Personally this is my favorite one of the Hobbit trilogy, and the third one is my least favorite. There are some parts where it drags and has unnecessary love triangle stuff, but I love every moment with Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug, so it's ok🙂‍↕️

Awe, sad to hear that but looking forward to watching the reaction tomorrow! It's also my personal favourite of the three . I thought it was paced decently, and as with Xenoprism, I am enthralled whenever we're with Smaug. Bilbo and his interactions are funny, witty, tense, and interesting. Plus we get some more time with the dwarves and how they are building more of a relationship with Bilbo. And we start to see the shift in Thorin more so. Lots of little subtleties in general and it feels less 'kid-ish' in this one in comparison to the first, though there are still some silly moments.

I feel like the first hobbit movie is by far the strongest, and honestly that's cuz it's most similar to the book. I'm all for making changes to make an adaptation better, but these changes didn't feel in line with the core themes of the books to me

It’s dwagon time baybeeeee Gonna watch this tomorrow, and it’ll be fun cuz I just rewatched Two Towers and ROTK this past week, so going from those masterpieces to this is gonna give me WHIPLASH

Conor OSullivan

Definitely wait for a fun day like a Saturday or Sunday to watch the last one then! As the others have said, while there are some saving graces for this one the last one is the pinnacle of everything that’s wrong with this trilogy. Buckle up for it 😅

GINA

I have to agree! I think I really enjoyed the lighthearted side of the first movie because that's how the book felt and though there were a few things different, there was a lot that triggered my memory of things that happened in the book and I really enjoyed that. I wonder if I would've had a better time with the second movie if I hadn't read the book.

GINA

oh the last one is going to be watched while I have the most energy and will to live as possible haha

Zac

Just started watching the reaction but wanted to say, yes that this the same guy that burped in your face in LotR, lol. He is also the director of the movies, Peter Jackson.

Zac

I never watched the 3rd movie and now I remember why, I just found this one so unenjoyable. Everything that happens in this movie feels like it takes twice as long as it should and it feels like you're constantly waiting for something that never comes. I remember not liking the cgi in these movies at all either. And you were right, the orcs and Legolas stuff felt pointless. I started to read the book a long time ago but never finished, but I feel like if I had read it, I would like the movies even less based on how people are saying it strayed from them after the first one.

blueshell

Yeah I am not fond of the trilogy, so you're definitely not alone. I enjoyed your reaction, though, so thanks for making the sacrifice 😆 It was just a bad idea to adapt The Hobbit into a sprawling epic when it's so much shorter and light-hearted compared to LOTR. The story behind the production is fascinating. Lindsay Ellis does a great breakdown on YouTube if you're interested.

AHH MY NECK Man, pacing in this one kinda sucks huh? Felt like more of a slog than the first one, and I didn’t even particularly like the first one. I swear like 90% of this movie I just could not give less of a shit about the characters, the location, the plot, or anything happening on screen. Like, I do not care about any of the dwarves, I *barely* care about Thorin, I don’t care about the elves and I super fucking don’t care about the orcs and the stupid pale orc and that one other orc that just looked like the pale orc with battle damage. I did like Bilbo’s solo mission and meeting Smaug, that whole bit was good. It gradually lost me once the dwarves showed up and it just turned into a long chase sequence. Good lord this movie had some fucking unbearable action sequences. I actually can’t remember if there were any *good* action sequences in this movie. Maybe some of Smaug’s stuff what with the fire and such. And I liked the bit where Gandalf was battling against that black shadow thing and his light magic against the black shadow made for a cool visual. But that’s about it. I think i’d only seen the back half of this movie previously, but I’ve seen none of the third film so that’ll sure be an experience.

Caspian Lavin

Ahhh yes, Gina’s one true nemesis- the spacebar.

The problem I had watching these was that there was obviously a good movie in there somewhere but it was ruined. I would say everything added that is not from the book was boring at best and awful at worst. Just needless fluff added to force a third movie to happen because they knew it would be an extra billion dollars. Also, hearing how badly the actors were treated and the corporate mess in making these really makes me unable to like them. Making Gandalf figure out Sauron returned and then sit on his ass for 60 years was almost as stupid a decision as not giving Thorin, Fili, and Kili lore accurate big bushy dwarf beards so they could have handsome leading men in the posters. Your commentary did make watching these enjoyable though, and I could watch the best parts of these movies all day. Bilbo and Gollum, Bilbo and Smaug, Bilbo and Gandalf.... mainly just Bilbo.

oh, don't know where else to tell you, but a new mv just dropped called Welcome to Noxus - Bite Marks league of legends and it's got some next season of arcane implications. (yes riot announced arcane is done but they're making another show with fortiche taking place in noxus/ionia/demacia so might as well be de facto season 3 with new storylines). If you haven't seen it, the Enemy MV imagine dragons ft JID also has some arcane animations. also maybe dm'd u about lotr content... no pressure, just info.

GINA

specifically HBO Max's spacebar.

Alden Beckham

Some info on non book stuff if your curious- all the Galadriel/Saruman/Necromancer stuff is at least mentioned in the appendixes for LotR, and is happening at the same time as the events of the hobbit, so it is at least mostly cannon lol, but the pale orc just isn’t, it’s a plot device :/ And yes it’s the sexy man pub! :D These movies are eh but I love the reactions, glad to have gotten Patreon!

Nyarung

You said a few times "this might be controversial to say" followed by something negative. Trust me. None of it is controversial lol

Im Sebbs

Would love to see you watch Httyd! More DWAAGONS

Patrick Boyda

If you're here for more dwagon content, it's not really fantasy like this, but the Godzilla movies are right there. He's not EXACTLY a dragon but he's a big lizzy with a funny lil face

GINA

big lizzy with a funny lil face you say?!

GINA

DWAGONNNNNNNNN

Rocketboy

As someone who never read the book but only watched every LOTR and Hobbit extended version when they came out, I really loved these movies and your reaction! I get that differences with the book can sometimes disappoint book readers but I also believe that when people adapt a book in live action, its actually not made specifically for people who read the book. The main target would be the people who did not read the books, these movies want to target that new (and larger) audience instead of focusing on people who already bought and read it. It's all business at the end of the day but I 100% agree that they need to get as close as possible to the source so everyone can eventually enjoy the movie. I think they did a greta job on that, I feel like when it came out everyone loved it. It reminds me of Foundation (insane sci fi tv show in apple tv). The tv show add a huuuuuge genetical dynasty based on the first emperor's dna (he's cloning himself again and again and 3 clones of him live at the same time at different ages to run the empire) and that whole thing is just absent in the books but from what I've seen and heard everyone loves it (readers or not), it's one of, if not THE coolest thing of the show!

Rocketboy

we all have access to toothbrush as well in our society yet some dont brush theirs or just have different dental conditions! The ruler has a poor hygiene he's just a gross person who only drinks alcohol lol

Rocketboy

What I loved in the extended cut is that when Gandalf is escaping Dol Guldur, he actually finds Thráin, Thorin's father who was missing/presumed dead but actually captured and trapped there. Gandalf speaks to him and tell him about his son but i don't remember what happens to him afterward. I do remember the extended cuts adding a lot of cool things. I remember at the end in the theater I told my dad "I won't watch the next one ever" because of how it ended. That "I am death" really hits hard tho

Strauss

You should really check your memory xD But what is your source for "the barrel scene"? because they very much DO RIDE BARRELS down the river in the book, end of chapter 9 and start of 10...the whole orc chase there is not in the book though. The book is after all not very long and since this is a trilogy they took the book as a baseline and had to flesh out the story, adding details, trying to connect it with LoTR (gandalf/galadriel/sauron-sidequest). I do understand the Tauriel/Kili thing is weird...but I suspect its mostly so audience establish a deeper connection to him because of what happens later, so it would feel more impactful
