I don't know if anyone has already told you or if you've found out by the time you read this comment, but the reason Inara left her home and is so afraid to commit to anything is because she's dying from some terminal disease. It's not really a spoiler because it wasn't going to be addressed until later seasons but they wrote her character with that in mind, if that helps explain any of her actions.
