Things I didn't expect in this movie:

1) having an emotional attachment to some giant hand looking aliens

2) THE TWIST

See when people talk about how well I predict the Marvel movies I just want to remind them that those plots and those twists are just so obvious in comparison to these other movies that absolutely bitch around my brain. Not to say Marvel movies are bad but god, some of these movies the thought that goes into them? Like fuck off. I LOVE IT hehe

Don't know if you read much short fiction, but Arrival is based on Story of Your Life by Ted Chiang. Would recommend both of his short story collections.

I will admit that I didn’t vote for this movie as a reaction but I do think it’s one of the best sci-fi movies in decades. Science fiction is supposed to challenge our perceptions of possibility and this movie does it masterfully. Also, as a linguistics person myself, I was downright giddy to see the representation. 🤣😎🤓

I feel like she would have had to tell Ian because the moment Hannah would have been dying from her disease, the realization that Louise knew all along would have dawned on him. I imagine her telling him about it sooner, albeit lead to divorce and a form of abandonment of their child, he could have tried to live life to the fullest with Hannah. And he probably does not hold rage against Hannah, of course, probably a simmering anger for Louise for forcing this life onto him, even though we cannot be sure if she can actually change the future even if she knows. So, she probably looks at Hannah with sorrow, but can live for the moments while he can, while he probably looks at Louise with contempt, but civility while Hannah is around. After all, for almost any parent, knowing their child is dying sooner than they would have hoped is a pretty hopeless feeling to have. Though it makes me wonder if Hannah eventually figured it out that her demise would have been known by her mom. I hope in my epilogue headcannon that Louise tells Hannah that she always knew towards the end of her life, and I hope in some part that Louise and Ian were able to give Hannah a full life in the years that she was around before it came to an end.

Arrival is an all time classic, hits all the points you need to fully feel a film and get lost in the story

So glad this one won. And we got a six word story from your past: Drowning. Life guard just staring. Bitch.

I once got swept down some rapids. In great enough quantities, water becomes positively murderous.

Lol Gina at one point forgetting that the kid died in a movie where the fate of humanity depended on giving a woman the ability to see the future like memories. I feel like there is a joke in there somewhere. I think my favourite thing about this movie is how they showed all those fundamental human communication concepts they were building with the aliens were the first things that broke down as international diplomacy fell apart. Could you tell this was the same director as Dune, Denis Villeneuve?

Frankie H

The director of this is Dennis Villeneuve who also directed Dune part I and II. So yeah, looks like we'll be seeing a lot of his work here. There's actually a phrase "canary in a coal mine." Miners would use canaries in cages and if the canary passed out/died the miners knew to quickly get out of the mine because the lack of air or toxic gases. Now the phrase means person or thing that gives early warning of danger.
