NEW SHOW ALERT!

I knew that this had to do with chess but I didn't realize we also had a nine year old pill popping junkie on our hands too!

A very intriguing first episode and I can't wait to see what leads her to where she is in the beginning of the show. Also if that custodian dies or I never see him again, I'm going to RIOT!

Let’s go!!! You’re in for a treat

GINA

a pill shaped treat?

Duolingo has chess lessons on it's mobile app.

The chronically late chess player you are thinking of is probably Magnus Carlsen (the best chess player in the world). He does in fact win most of the time anyway. It's crazy how good he is. He was world chess champion for 10 years straight and only lost the title in 2023 by choosing not to compete because he got bored of classical chess

Hi Gina, I hope you don't have a good day. Excited to rewatch this with you!

GINA

Shut up really? Let me wipe the dust off the app and get back on it

Immortal

You can online chess like chess. com. They show possible moves and play against other online players

GINA

Oooh wait let me check that out as well

GINA

Yes that guy! He’s so casual about it all like it means nothing to him it’s crazy

Arelzian

He has also done stuff like play 10 people at once without looking at any of the boards and won all 10

Excellent reaction, Gina. I'm glad to see you had many of the same observations as I did my first time around. This show has much to say in episode one that will continue throughout the series, such as the role of girls and women in traditionally male pursuits, the orphanage system and life beyond it, and pumping kids full of tranquilizers, even though that last point seems to have moved from the schools to the parents. You mentioned that Beth has no manners, and I agree, though I don't blame her. Does Methuen teach manners? Not really, they just expect the students to absorb the lessons of those etiquette movies - never a realistic expectation, even in 1954 or so. As an aside, those movies were just going out of style when I was in school (in the late '60s and early 70's - I'm 63 and I barely remember them). I'm looking forward to watching the rest of this show with you and hoping that you find it as wonderful as I have each time I've seen it. I think this will be the seventh time. Yeah, it's that good.
