We learned two things in this episode

1) never celebrate too early

2) don't give Beth a beer expecting her to only have a sip (I swear if t his girl becomes an alcoholic....)

Oh and I'm being serious when I say I need confirmation and/or clarification on Beth and Townes' ages please and thank you.

Sorry for the sneeze at the 24 minute mark lol I forgot to cut it out.... everyone say BLESS YOU GINA

Beth was roughly 15 when they first met, and Townes was roughly early to mid 20s The hotel room scene is meant to infer that Townes may be secretly gay at a time when it was very much frowned upon

Another fine reaction, Gina. I'm thinking Beth is at least 17, maybe 18 in this episode. She was 15 at Methuen, when she started to say her real age. At one point, Townes says he was surprised Beth wasn't at the open "last year," so Beth would have had to play a lot of chess to be invited before that. Also, Cincinnati was "a couple of years ago," so that means 18 to me as it had to be a year after Methuen. I think Townes is bi, as Roger was seemingly looking at him with approval right before he left. As for the drinking, I think the show is demonstrating its corrosive effect (when abused) in a powerful way. I really like the discussion of genius and madness, which Alma was right to shut down, but it helps the viewer as this observation has some basis in reality. I've heard that pattern recognition among chaos is a sign of genius and I think that's intriguing. Is Alma a great parent? No, but she's trying to be a cool parent, and her judgment is weakened, I believe, from the alcohol, so it's not surprising to me. Also, I love the view of Beth from the camera's viewfinder - it's one of my favorite shots in the series. Again TQG evokes its time and place remarkably well. Everything in this show is perfectly on point.

OH! Then I accept!! I was wondering about him sharing a room with one bed but the hair moving scene and possible AGE GAP ROMANCE obviously took over any and all thoughts lol

GINA

Ugh thank you, you too <3

I also went to the DMV to get a Real ID yesterday. Why do they have to make the temporary license look like a damn wanted poster?

@24min you indeed did not cut the sneeze out 🤠

Townes’ camera is so cool. Old rolleiflex TLR, medium format 🎞️🎞️ Nothing beats that format, I shoot a ton of it day to day for my work

GINA

it's decided, the sneeze is staying in haha the true uncut unedited version here on patreon. What a gift lol

Did some quick google research. Beth Harmon was born on Nov 2, 1948. The hotel scene took place August of 1966 (if the show/novel didn't take artistic liberties with the month), so Beth would have been 17. Townes was in University when they first met, so he's probably 22+ at this point (since that was a couple years ago). Ickiness aside, technically the age of consent in Las Vegas (where that tournament was) and Kentucky (where Beth is from) is 16. So I would file this one under the gross but technically not illegal territory? Though tbh, I don't know how the laws were different in 1966.

Bless you Gina. Not a chess expert so I could be wrong but the reason Benny says playing open tournaments can only hurt him is that if you lose to anyone lower rated you lose rating. So if he's the best person in the tournament he can keep his rating by beating every single player (highly unlikely) or by just not playing. He clearly still plays in the bigger tournaments.

Bless your face, Gina. 🤲 (And since you sneezed during this episode, bless you! ✨)

everyone else is saying she was at least 17?

psspsspss

That was my reading too! He's sharing the room with that other guy (Roger?) and there's only one bed, plus that give my best to Roger from Beth and the way Townes reacted felt pointed

Toby Young

Yes, by the time she’s in Vegas. She was 15 when they met

Just to ease your mind... Townes is gay. That's what that scene was about. His 'roommate' walked in and was overly familiar with him (for the time), and reminds him of their dinner plans before walking out in a super skimpy outfit. Townes is attracted to her. Just not sexually. He sees how incredible she is (like everyone that meets her) and gets flustered when he's with her as a result. Also, the mom. The thing I like about this show is that there aren't good guys and bad guys. Everyone is nuanced. They all have their own demons. The mom loves Beth. She's encouraged Beth. She's learned everything she can about chess to support Beth. She's planned out her entire career for her. Yes, she's an addict. But so it Beth. Elements of their relationship were unhealthy but, ultimately, she wasn't evil. She wanted the best for her daughter.

at ~ 40 min she literally says that the tourney she saw him at where he didnt play was a "couple of years ago" so there was a time skip that they didnt make super obvious
