For most of this shoot, I had NIKI positioned against the setting sun—backlit. Shooting this way takes a bit of courage and an eye for how the light hits the model, as well as where you place that golden disk on the horizon. That, in turn, determines your shooting angle.
The risk with backlighting is that you can lose detail in the face—or any part of the body turned toward the camera. When you try to recover those shadows in RAW editing, the face can end up looking flat, and the photo might appear slightly soft or out of focus. The trade-off, however, is a photo full of atmosphere. You can fix this using a reflector or artificial light. The result will be nicely detailed, but often at the cost of that natural mood and softness.
There’s another approach too—the one you can see in some of today’s shots. You position yourself with your back to the sun, watch out for your own shadow, and shoot the model beautifully illuminated by the soft, golden light of sunset. I didn’t take too many of these because, for me, they feel a bit too simple—kind of "punk style," where I don’t have to think much and just click away.
Still, these photos have their charm. Ironically, I stayed in the same spot, and it was the model who circled around me to end up facing the sun. The risk with this approach is that if the sun is still high and harsh, you’ll get sharp, dark shadows across the face and body. That didn’t happen here, thanks to the warm tone and gentle glow of the low-setting sun.
