So I unfortunately have some more bad news. :/

After finishing the assembly of the new computer and switching it on, I ran into a major problem. It wasn't outputting any signal whatsoever to the screen. And so in the hopes of pinpointing whatever is causing this issue, I've been switching out components.

I tried switching out the GPU. Still nothing.

I tried switching out the RAM. Still nothing.

Next, I'm going to try to remove the thermal paste (I just used the one that came with the CPU cooler, and in retrospect it did look kind of off) and apply some new paste. But in order to do that, I first need to get the right tools and compound to clean off the old paste. I bought some online, but that'll probably not arrive until next week.

So yeah, this means that I won't be able to render any images for a while longer.

Sorry, y'all. :(

Oof the bad luck streak continues.. no worries friend take your time things happen and keep your head up

Elzipper 7

Probably not your fault. Take it easy, okay?

Ver min

Did you connect it? Is your screen wireless?

John Johnson

Maybe let a computer shop take a look at it?

Shiny Umbreon

You dont need tools to clean off thermal compound, just a paper towel. But before you do that, I recommend connecting your monitor directly to your motherboards integrated GPU port, guessing it's DVI or displayport. It's possible your computer may not be set to use anything but that yet until you set everything up and install drivers.

MK3424

does the motherboard have a monitor connection? It might send the video signal through that instead of the gpu...

Macro Munchies

What type of power supply are you running for your 2 3090s

Shadow Nightclaw

In regards to thermal paste, the best/easiest method for cleaning it off is using q-tips with 90% isopropyl alcohol on it. Good for getting it cleaned out of the nooks, though you'll go through several q-tips. 90% isopropyl alcohol won't leave any residue to cause issues afterwards either. It's what I've done for removing old thermal paste for clients when I've had to replace the cooling fan for their computer processors in the past.

Loneclaw

Yes, of course I connected it.

Loneclaw

That's not really an option, since I can't transport the computer (it's too big and heavy, and I don't have a car).

Loneclaw

I'm pretty sure just using a paper towel isn't going to work. And the motherboard doesn't have an integrated GPU port.

Loneclaw

It's not possible to connect a monitor directly to this motherboard.

Loneclaw

1600W 80+ Titanium. But right now, while I'm trying to get it to work, I only use one GPU, so power shouldn't be an issue.

Loneclaw

Well, I have q-tips, but no 90% isopropyl alcohol. Thanks for the advice, though. I'll see if I can't buy some in a nearby store.

Shiny Umbreon

It's what I have used for years as I've built different computers. Products that make you think you need any more than that are just there to sell you something you don't need. Use isopropyl alcohol with it if you want to be extra safe. You can find footage of people doing it on YouTube if you don't believe me

Phero Foxdale

I miss the old days when it would just beep a code at you. *Old man noises*

Your motherboard should have a Q-code display, is that outputting anything? If it is, it should give you a better indication of what specifically isn’t working.

1withU

Looks like it should be on the top-right next to the mobo’s power connectors.

Loneclaw

It just outputs 00, which I think is an "all-clear"

MK3424

Ah.... tried unplugging the gpu, cleaning the connectors and plugging it back in?

1withU

Maybe try CMOS reset? Should be a button on the I/O panel of your mobo for that

1withU

Also there should be four LEDs for CPU/RAM/VGA/BOOT issues. Are any of them lit up?

Loneclaw

It's not really something I can check now, since I removed the CPU cooler. I'll have to replace the paste first.

Dagongeek94

I myself would just do a thermal pad instead lasts longer and can be reused if need be. As for gettinf the old past of most PC builders I see just use isopropl alcohol and a q tip

Glitch Flux

Oof, you keep having worse PC issues than I have in getting upgrades. Your luck will change soon and you'll be back to making amazing stuff, I'm sure of it.

TheoV2

Regarding PC issues, you for the big boi gpus are you certain that they are getting enough power? Have you tried only running one to get your BIOS updated? Make sure you don't have a dead GPU port on your MOBO

Loneclaw

Unfortunately, none of the nearby stores or the pharmacy carry isopropyl :/ I guess I just have to wait until the cleaning stuff I ordered get delivered.

Metal Fox

Sorry, here's some common stuff to ask: -Is it all connected? -Is the power switch on? -Did you hit the power button? -Is the hdmi connected to the gpu and not the cpu? -Is there enough watts from your power supply? -After these, is your monitor on the correct input? -The most important final question. Is there any scratches on any of your circuit boards (even tiny across a circuit)? If it still doesn't, you may want to upload pics of your setup, so we may notice something ^-^ Assuming you don't have like a local geek squad, lol

Loneclaw

For your first six questions: yes. No, there are no scratches on my circuit boards (at least none that I can see). Once I've managed to change the thermal paste and put the cooler back on, I'll see if it works. If it doesn't, I'll upload pics for help.

Reeka Lina

You need a discord so us veteran PC builders can help you better, man. When you power on the pc, do the fans spin? If they do, do they spin for 1 second or do they keep spinning? What lights are on at the Q-Code section of the board, and what color are they?

Metal Fox

Oh, and did you read the motherboard manual on which RAM is placed where, including which GPU slot? Most computers work in series, so it may not be reading your card, being placed somewhere else. (You can't stick it anywhere).

Loneclaw

Yeah, I'll look into making a discord server somewhere down the line. Yes, when I powered up the PC the fans spun and continued to do so until I shut it down. I'm not sure what lights were on, but I got the Q-Code 00 on the display on the motherboard. However, until I've replaced the thermal paste and put the CPU cooler back in place, I'm not going to turn it back on.

Loneclaw

I mean, I basically filled every single RAM slot with a stick of RAM, so placement shouldn't be an issue. As for the GPU... I actually placed it in the second slot. I figured that if I put it in the first slot it would be too close to the CPU cooling tower, and since all PCIe slots are x16 speed and since the manual for the motherboard didn't explicitly state that a GPU had to be in the first slot, I figured it was okay. Maybe it wasn't? >w>

Reeka Lina

I think you have a misunderstanding about thermal paste. That would never be a reason for the PC to not display. I would look at the motherboard's manual to find which RAM slots the manual considers to be the best configuration if not filling all slots

Reeka Lina

The new Threadripper Pro CPUs are not supported by this Mainboard. You need to get a 32 Gb USB stick, format it to FAST32, and use the "Bios Flash" button on the back of the mainboard while the PC is shut down fully! You can do this without a GPU or CPU or any other plugged-in components. You can update the bios, while the PC is fully turned off and no signal is sent to the screen.

Red Dusty Dino

Right, tis is time for you to invest in Luck charms or somehow appease the spirit you have possibly offended, so they stop hexing you with misfortune. Good luck with the computer mate!

Ethan

Naw thread ripper has no integrated graphic thus no motherboard port for graphics

Metal Fox

That's likely it then ^-^, skim through the book and see how they want the setup ^^ Like those below, the cooling has nearly nothing to do with the initial startup and display output. That'll change if your system gets hot enough to set off the safety systems that control your hardware

Metal Fox

If Loneclaw bought a Windows installer (thumbstick), that'll be enough. I don't believe they intend on pirating an OS, lol Unless you meant using Linux, which is free.

Reeka Lina

I don't think that is related to anything I'm talking about

DraconianTalon

One thing to watch for when replacing the paste is that with some motherboards, over tightening the CPU and cooler can squeeze things just enough the prevents the ram from being identified properly and thus no post. a YouTuber I watch that's has food videos is Jaystwocents. He has videos on things like this.

Loneclaw

Thankfully, both the motherboard and the cooler are designed to "tell" when you've tightened the screws enough. This evening, I replaced the paste and have put the cooler back on, and it seems to have gone smoothly.

kordophix

Definitely try re-seating the CPU, I've had that cause problems before, or when there isn't enough mounting pressure from the heatsink.
