I’m thinking they’re not saying that the old wives tale message that Ruka sent actually worked to change her gender- I think maybe it was just the butterfly effect- maybe the message (whether it was correctly decoded or not) caused some minor change in her mother’s actions- like maybe if it arrived before Ruka was conceived, it somehow led to her being conceived at a slightly different time or under slightly different circumstances- like perhaps a day, a week, or even hours before or after it originally happened- and dad’s sperm at this slightly different time/circumstance (the one that fertilized mom’s egg) happened to carry the X chromosome instead of the Y lol

Also, with this scenario I gave, you would think that there would be more physical differences to Ruka than just her biological gender- even her name would probably be different if she were born a different gender than originally, but I think keeping this to just the gender change is a forgivable oversimplification in an otherwise tightly dense story
