So, if Maomao’s speculation from a few episodes ago regarding a baby swap were to be right, then it might mean that the baby that died because of the honey was actually the son of the empress dowager (so in other words, the emperor’s younger brother, the baby born at the same time), and Ah Duo’s son was then raised as the emperor’s brother- who was briefly at the garden party, and was said to be rarely seen and rumored to be sickly. And you’re correct in thinking that a eunuch (as Jinshi is supposed to be) probably wouldn’t be able to have a whole lot of muscle mass. I think it was worded by Maomao herself in episode 1 that the only males allowed in the rear palace are the emperor and his kin- all others have to be eunuchs. Also, I think Lakan was trying to buy Maomao from the granny, not get her for free- but for some reason, she wasn’t considering selling her to him- then Jinshi walked in and did it, so I think that’s why Lakan called him a thief (for buying what he wanted without fuss and just as he thought he might have softened the granny up enough to be able to do so)- not that he thinks he intentionally bought the “prize” he himself wanted to spite him. And of course Lakan has figured out that Jinshi is higher up than he seems…

The incident in episode 8 took place at a different brothel, not the Verdigris House that Maomao and her adoptive father are associated with, so the servant girl we saw wasn’t the same one- and Basen was the one following Maomao and Jinshi around town, while Gaoshun was the one back at the house with the old lady Suiren while she was going through some of Jinshi’s old toys

Yeah I was constantly confusing those two men until I got into editing and got a slower and longer look at them. I did pick up on the running gag of Basen thinking he was in charge LOL

you know its kinda interesting to see all of those little actions Lakan is doing because at first you're like who's this guy , and all of those little actions are kinda vague but on a rewatch you know who he really is so you pay attention more.

i also went back to see frame by frame, and yikes, i did not remember seeing that scary face maomao was making

Remember that when you saw the granny pick her up and toss her to somebody, that was in Maomao’s mind- whether the granny would actually do that, I’m not sure. Another thing to know in this show- most of the things we’re seeing and learning about are through Maomao’s perspective- and even as smart as she is, she has her “blind spots” or just things that even she doesn’t fully understand (like the hairpin significance), so at times she could be an unreliable narrator

I know what you mean, but, personally, I trust her instincts about Granny because she's known the old woman all her life. Also, MAN that was a funny cutaway fantasy sequence lmfao
