Maomao's personality and humor is one of the main reasons this anime is one of my top 3 anime of all time i never read the light novel as I just don't enjoy reading too much. I would read the manga if it wasn't as behind as the anime, and beside the manga is being adapted from the novel which is a lot different than if the manga was the original source of material.

I think the previous emperor was likely physically/sexually abused by the women around him when he was growing up, and that’s why he had such strong and fearful reactions when women approached him and he could only be comfortable around younger girls- doesn’t make it okay that he went on to abuse them as well, as they say hurt people hurt people. In episode 8 Maomao quickly stops herself when she starts remembering the emperor’s tastes and thinks that maybe the previous emperor isn’t actually the father of the emperor’s younger brother given that the mother was around 30 when she had him- but I’m pretty sure that she got pregnant when she assaulted him in that flashback- now whether that baby actually is Jinshi or the baby that ended up with Ah Duo because of a potential swap- Anshi/the empress dowager and the previous emperor would still be related to him as his grandparents if the swap happened, and he could still look a lot like them (Ah Duo also has very similar features to the previous emperor, so the genetic traits would have been reinforced I suppose)

Yeah I was slow to realize what they were implying with his mother but it makes total sense what was going on once you factor in his abhorrence to touch
