We knew that Gaoshun is a bit older back in season 1- when we found out that Basen is his son, and 19 years old just like Jinshi- still I think he’s only around 40, I’m pretty sure he married and had his kids really young

I think it was a little confusing for me when I first watched too- but she’s not there as just a food taster, she’s the personal assistant to Gaoshun on this trip since Basen is acting as Jinshi’s assistant- and I think what knocked Basen out was the aperitif, so he’s just not used to alcohol lol- but you were right about the food being aphrodisiacs, Jinshi was probably served that food to lower his inhibitions and perhaps take advantage of him in some way given his status

Master Jinshi is currently the "crown prince" which mean their role is next person in succession. While i'm not an expert in chinese succession(i could be very wrong about this), crown prince/princess are often selected by the emperor. We know that the emperor have 1 daughter, which is that little baby girl, with two concubines that are currently pregnant. It is possible for the emperor to change the next heir if he wanted to, maybe he's waiting for a boy, or when his children become of age, he might not want a literal child to become an emperor and rather wait until they become of age. Sometimes people can be weird and actually chose their siblings or even someone unrelated to become the next heir over their own children. I'm sure its quite different than the british monarchy and its set several hundred years ago. And it's fiction so it may not have to be accurate either
