Gundam? (Patreon)

I want to check out some more Gundam (I've seen a little via sponsors) but there is a metric shit ton of it so my question is where is the best place to start?

I would say Gundam Thunderbolt (one of my personal favorites) is good if you want a more standalone one. It’s two OVAs: 1. Gundam Thunderbolt: December Sky 2. Gundam Thunderbolt: Bandit Flower If you want a series, Zeta Gundam is a sequel to the original Gundam movies you watched before. If you want to continue the main storyline this is the one to watch. If you’re interested in Alternate Universe stuff, the Gundam Iron Blooded Orphans series is what most modern viewers watch as their introduction to Gundam.

Short answer, 008th ms team or Zeta Gundam I'm glad you're interested in the franchise. It's kinda like Fate, in that there's a million spinoffs but the "core" is small. The original Mobile Suit Gundam which you've already watched -> Zeta Gundam -> the movie Char’s Counterattack. Gundam ZZ is sometimes lincluded, as it follows directly from Zeta, but none of the stuff it introduces is needed for the movie. There are some other shorter shows in the main timeline, like "war in the pocket" you already watched, Thunderbolt (I like the first Thunderbolt OVA a lot, but hated the second one, so it's hard to recommend for me) and 08th MS team. 08th MS team is a short war story from a grunt's perspective, more like a Vietnam movie or something. There's a prequel called "the origin," kinda like "fate zeo" but for Gundam. ngl I haven't actually seen any gundam shows outside the main timeline, so I can't really comment on them.

I have a soft spot for Gundam Seed (the first season), but I don't know how it compares to other Gundam series you might have seen already.

Yeah I would say Zeta Gundam might be the best bet. Zeta -> CCA -> various standalone -> (Hathaway if it ever finishes) -> F91 -> Turn A might be the most coherent order I never really thought of the connection between Gundam and Fate, but yeah they really are structurally similar. Especially Origin and Zero: both prequels loved by the general anime community but disliked by the hardcore fans for ruining characterization lol

I hate origin as an OVA but I like the manga The manga was a re-telling of the entire original anime that included a new backstory as part of it, the retelling changed some of the rest of the story to match the new backstory. But the OVA only covers the new backstory, which does not fit the original show. Since he watched the movies so long ago and Zeta builds on them so much, it might be a good idea for him to watch Origin as a reminder of who some of the characters are (it's only 13 episodes) before going into it. Then again, there was 5 years between the original gundam airing and zeta airing and people managed to figure out what was happening in zeta without any reminders! I just hate Fate Zero tho xD
