The soldiers who excecuted the Germans were French troops.

Hey there Lauren and Harry. I KNOW this was a hard one but it is certainly a key part of the overall story. So the German officer in the photo is, in fact, Erwin Rommel, a skilled strategist who had fought the allies in north africa. He was everything except a nazi, he denounced nazi activities, he was a co-conspiritor in the failed assassination attempt of Hitler. And for that he was given a choice to be executed, and his family shamed, or take his own life, and keep his honor intact as well as his family safe from suffering the same faith. He never was a true nazi. If you examine the scene closely, you will actually see the black ribbon attached to the frame of the photograph, indicating a FALLEN soldier. The camp that Easy Co helped liberate was the Kaufering concentration camp complex, a sub-camp of Dachau. It is important to remember that as awful as THAT was to watch, Spielberg actually had to tone DOWN the atrocities that Winters and his soldiers found that day for the sake of being able to show it on TV. My jr hi history teacher was a man named Jimmy Gentry. He fought with the 42 Infantry division and participated in the battle of the bulge. His unit actually liberated a different section of Dachau. I remember just once as a his student a time when he talked about that experience. It WRECKED me to hear from an eye witness the experience of coming in to the camp and seeing the pure evil that went on there. One of the hardest things I have ever experienced was seeing a grown man cry remembering the devastation of Dachau. I can see his face clear as day in my mind, some 40 years later and it just hurts my heart. I find it interesting that Harry was talking about how americans at the time viewed the conflict vs how people in europe who were on hitler's door step AND his shit-list viewed. I think Harry had a good point in that. I also think that by and large, there was a sense of patriotism and duty to defend the helpless that existed to a higher degree IN the us during that time period. I also think that is part of the reason that THIS series IS so important for young americans to watch AND for folks from other nations to watch as well. So many people from my generation and younger have had life comparatively SO EASY. Band of Brothers helps to put that in perspective, in my opinion.

also meant to talk a little about Franklin D Roosevelt but had a minor crisis (Alcimede hopped up in my lap and was BLEEDING all over. Turns out she had somehow torn one of her claws off. She's OK, sleeping in my lap as I type this {still taking her to the vet just to be absolutely certain she is fine} but that threw a wrench in my comment typing mission. Roosevelt is the only US president that got elected for four terms. In fact the constitution was amended such that 2 terms is now the max any one person can be ELECTED to. He won relection in 1944 but his health was failing and he died in mid april. Harry Truman, his vice president of only 82 days, assumed the office, and and served two terms.

Oh we hadn't picked up on Rommel, Harry did know of him but completely missed this when watching! Thanks for letting us know, what incredible detail they get into these episodes. Wow that must've been life changing hearing his experience, I still struggle to comprehend what it must've been like to find the camps not knowing what they were. It amazes us that after the war these heroes just continued on their life as normal and you could've come into contact with them daily and never know what they saw and did. I feel like these types of series should be compulsory for younger generations to watch to truly understand what other generations did not only for their country but their family and others across the world. It really does change your perspective on life but also on what sacrifices they made without hesitation. Also hope Alcimene is ok and it was just a claw that came out!!
