Loved your reaction to one of the best films of the 20th century! I am one of the few people that I know who read the novel before seeing the movie. Stephen Spielberg did an amazing job bringing the film to life given the struggles and hardships he and his crew experienced during the shoot. One of the subplots from the novel that Spielberg abandoned completely was that Matt Hooper (shark guy) was having an affair with Chief Brody's wife (they had been acquainted earlier in life and Hooper had been attracted to her then). Also in the novel, Hooper actually IS killed by the shark. The mayor IS in fact one of the villains in the story. His focus on the summer dollars is understandable TO A POINT. But when the dollars start to matter more than multiple human lives, there is a problem. In the novel, the mayor is on the hook for a lot of money to the Mafia, which helps to explain his desire to keep the beaches open. The largest great white currently living is a female that is estimated to be 21 feet long and weighs some 2500 lbs. The shark in this film IS huge for sure, but it is within reason for a real living shark. Jaws 2 is ok (not great but at least watchable), the other two are trash in my opinion. The shark IN 3 is said to be some 35 feet long with jaws more than 4 feet wide, outside the realm of reality by a large measure. That's getting in to Megalodon territory (there is a Meg film, but I have never bothered to watch it....just can't suspend THAT much disbelief....) I dare say that the jumpscare at Ben Gardner's boat is one of the scariest things I've seen in a film. For reference, $10,000 in 1975 is nearly $60,000 in today's money. This movie WAS inspired by the jersey shore shark attacks in 1916 (which Brody ACTUALLY references when he and Hooper are trying their best to reason with Vaughn about the problem the town is genuinely facing). The author of the book, Peter Benchley had a cameo as the news reporter doing his story on the beach right before the third attack. The famous line "you're gonna need a bigger boat..." was actually ad-libbed by Roy Scheider on set and has become one of the most famous movie lines in cinema history. Quint's story about the Indianapolis is about a factual event. One of the things that I find fascinating is that Captain Mcvay, the commanding officer of the vessel is the only captain in us naval history to have been court martialed for the loss of a ship sunk due to enemy activity. The story initially had been (as depicted in the film) that radio silence had been maintained due to orders in regards to the secrecy of the mission. Declassified documents actually proved that no less than THREE distress calls HAD been sent. None were acted upon because one commander was drunk, another thought it was a Japanese ruse, and the third had given orders not to be disturbed. In fact, Mochitsura Hashimoto, the commander of the japanese sub, testified IN Mcvay's defense (one of the sticking points was that Mcvay was not employing a zig-zag course that, in theory at least, helped make surface ships harder to hit with the torpedoes of the day....) that he would have been able to hit the indianapolis even if Mcvay HAD been ziggin and zagging. Eventually, long after the war had ended, Mcvay took his own life, at the age of 70. Bill Clinton would officially exonerate him posthumously. Dunno if ya'all noticed, but during the scene right AFTER the indianoplis story, as the three men are mustering on deck and Brody is checking his revolver, but there was a naturally occurring shooting star in the background. It was captured on film totally by chance. With regard to Quint destroying the radio, MY personal theory on the matter is that Quint had begun to suffer from "ahab obsession syndrome". The shark had turned into his personal Moby Dick. He didn't want ANYONE robbing him of the kill (also robbing him of the ten thousand dollar payday...). This film essentially conjured the summer blockbuster category out of thin air. 286 million dollars at the box office IN 1975 (1.6 BILLION in 2025 dollars) made studios realize that it was a strategy they could bank on. I would recommend another ocean film to you (assuming you haven't seen it) by James Cameron called The Abyss. It is easily in my top five movies of all time. SO good.....

Ah jeez we didn't even realise it was based on a novel, I wonder what it would be like to read it now we've watched the movie.. The storyline is so good I think I would enjoy it thoroughly but this movie just hit so well with the audio and the cinematic shots I think I may actually enjoy watching it as opposed to reading it. I appreciate you filling in the blanks with some of the storyline, I think the mayor aspect would've been beneficial to the movie just to heighten the tension more and show just how deep the corruption was running! We haven't seen a lot of sharks so it is so hard to picture the true size of them but I also really don't want to know how big they can be or I'll never get back into the ocean again 😅 Completely missed the shooting star but what a cool shot to have got and what luck to have captured it! Crazy how well this movie did but then again it was honestly one of the best movies we have watched on the channel so not surprising that it did so well. I can only imagine how good this would've been to watch on a big screen! Would be so cool to see this with a live orchestra, I've seen a few movies overseas do this when the soundtrack is that good and I think this would be a cool experience!

Benchley released the novel in 1974 (year I was born, so I’ve got that going for me) and somebody wisely jumped on the film rights. Spielberg had a lot of trouble with the mechanical shark (nicknamed Bruce, after spielberg’s lawyer….) I can honestly say that I have NEVER seen a shark in the wild, so I must rely on comparisons between objects I can measure. I will also admit as a child, I had an irrational fear of great whites sneaking into swimming pools….. ALSO, my aunt took me to see one of the rocky films in the 80’s and jaws two trailer BEFORE the rocky film scarred my imagination for life……

Love you guys but she really needs to work on trying to stop talking over the actors. Try to wait for the times when nobody is speaking because there were so many times when she talked right over some of the moist important lines in the movie. I mean ...for real, this happened over and over. Interrupting people is so frustrating to hear whether it is in life or somebody talking over the characters in the movie. just treat them like we are all there with them and wait till nobody is speaking.

Hey im Lauren 😊 It's hard to know when there will be no talking as that vast majority of movies we have never seen. Sorry it gets frustrating for you! We hope there will be some others that are not as talkative that you may enjoy a little more! Thank you for saying you love us generally though! We will try and get better!

BTW, Quint was actually using piano wire that he picked up from a local music store where all of the filthy rich snobby democrats go to blow weach other's tiny little flutes.
