Volume 1 was all about progressing the plot, while Volume 2 was all about character development and making sure all plans and characters are aligned and in the best position to go into battle. Volume 1 had lots of physical action, but Volume 2 had the heart - the moments of reconciliation, the moments of reunification and the moments of unconditional love. I think it hurts splitting up the episodes because we all just want to go go go and defeat Vecna, but I think we needed all of this character stuff to make the finale hit that much harder. So now if anyone dies we feel so much more attached and connected to these characters. I personally think Will's "coming out" scene was one of the best scenes in the entire show. First off, this show is always about misfits coming together to create their own found-family, who would do whatever it takes to save each other...and this season - like season 1 - feels the most united in that messaging than season 2,3 or 4 did. It also shows that Vecna truly underestimated Will...he tried to scare him into thinking if he revealed his true self to his family & friends that he would be abandoned, but Will found the strength to overcome this fear (unlike Vecna who has NEVER faced his fear of what happened in that cave) so Vecna couldn't have a hold over him anymore and that Will could be at peak strength to fight him....so I think Will is truly the centerpiece of this whole show....Vecna taking Will because he thought he was weak will truly be his undoing...because Will has done what Vecna can't...he faced his biggest fears. Season 1 started with Will being taken because everyone viewed him as "weak" - the town, his schoolmates, his father, even his friends - but this season showed us how he was fighting and surviving in the upside down all alone - but then when he was rescued Will was made to feel weak by being overprotected by everyone, especially his mother, and treated as fragile - and then he got possessed by the mind flayer - which reinforced this idea that he was "weak," but he survived - Will is the ultimate survivor...he has kept surviving and trying to live a "normal" life - then in season 3 & 4 his friends are moving on without him and his sexuality is blossoming and he is alone in that struggle because being gay in the 1980's in America during the height of the AIDS epidemic - especially in a small town in Indiana, which is truly isolating and scary - so on top of all his trauma, being way too overprotected and dealing with this secret and shame about himself - he is still being told he is weak...but he was never weak. He is probably one of the strongest characters because even being abused and tortured- emotionally, mentally, physically - and having your own consciousness and body be responsible for countless deaths - he always maintained a sweetness and kindness and he is still finding his own inner strength to accept himself and reveal his true self to everyone in his life and then use his newfound powers to defeat the scariest monster who is the cause of most of his trauma. Like damn! If that isn't some crazy character development, I don't know what to say. So yeah, maybe the twists and reveals in volume 2 felt underwhelming, but I wasn't really watching the show for the sci-fi nature of it all...I was watching it for these characters- particularly Will because his character arc always fascinated me since he was always kind of in the background - part of the team, but not quite...now he is truly the centerpiece and the main weapon against Vecna...cause even though I love El and she is badass....she was never able to hurt Vecna like Will was able to in 5X5 ....so this showdown between Will & Vecna is going to be insane I think! ....sorry for the long ramble...just my thoughts on the show so far!
