here are just a few movies that are pre-1960s that I know I should've seen by now! trying to make sure to hit some of the older classics as we're hopping around all different genres and time periods 😇

Henry Graham

No bad choices here. Just watch them all.

Michael T

You can't miss with ANY of those, Camilla. All of them 10/10.

Grinznmore

Better described as classics. in my opinion it would be nice to have at least one a month. This list would be an excellent starting point.

Thomas Fahey

Musicals deserve a special category. You must have seen a few.

Adrian Duenas

Citizen Kane defines deserves your attention. Filmmaking 101 all wrapped up in one movie

There should be a 5th option. "All of the above"

Dorsalfinsky

I went with Singin’ in the Rain, but it’s really my least favorite of the four. But it is major fun. But it’s trailing so I’ll leave my vote be and gladly watch any of the others. After the batch of early Kubrick stuff. Holy wowzers.

Dorsalfinsky

Actually, Rear Window comes in last on my list. Something doesn’t pull me in. Unlike two of his other movies that are accessible and so good and total works of art.

I'll concur with that. Musicals are a unique genre & while they've fallen out of fashion somewhat, they are technically different than "old movies." But... i've thought about this before. I think musicals must be extra hard to get past the copyright hits, as they're at least 50% copyrighted music. But you might think about "White Christmas" and/or "Holiday Inn" for next year's Solstice festivities. 😉

For future consideration, you might consider the "noir" genre. Many modern movies still use techniques pioneered in that era. Be sure to hit the big ones, of course: "The Maltese Falcon," "Touch of Evil," "Double Indemnity," & Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train." But my personal recommendation is "Rififi." It's French & is sometimes referred to as "the first heist film."

Myoclonic Jerk

Do you speak French? 😂 Otherwise, you'll need subtitles. "Rififi" is definitely my most highly recommended, of course because i like heist movies ("Double Indemnity" is a close 2nd).

As others have said, I say watch all of them! Another one I would add to the list (it came out in 1960) is The Apartment by Billy Wilder. He was Hitchcock's equal, but he doesn't get nearly enough recognition today as perhaps the greatest screenwriter-director of all time. I promise, you'll love it! Also, before watching Jimmy Stewart's Hitchcock collaborations like Rear Window or Vertigo, I highly suggest reacting to It's a Wonderful Life (Stewart's personal favorite). It will really help to understand the impact of Rear Window and Vertigo to get a sense of Jimmy Stewart's presence in American movie culture in the 40s FIRST. (Please make sure to watch the black-and-white version. I'll post the link below. Avoid the colorized version -- bleccchhh!!! -- and the "abridged version", which edits out some crucial scenes -- double bleccchhh!!!!) And please try not to read the summary on Amazon! It's very spoilery!! https://www.amazon.com/Its-Wonderful-Life-4K-UHD/dp/B081PM9PYX

I'd recommend "12 angry men" as well. Definitely one of the best pre-1960s movies. Also it's the fifth highest rated movie of all time on IMDb.
