The split nature of the character has fluctuated greatly in the mythology over the years. Sometimes Clark Kent is very awkward compared to Superman, sometimes there’s not a huge difference in their comportment and attitude. Christopher Reeve was especially excited to play up the difference in the two personas and based his Clark Kent on the delightfully awkward comic performance of Cary Grant in the film “Bringing Up Baby”. The result was, of course, adorkable. Though having a dog might have made him even more likeable. 🐶 Thanks, a super-fun reaction! And a great take on the overall production. 😊

Nice reaction, glad to see you were interested in prepping with an earlier version of the movie. I haven't seen it in a while and forgot how weird it is. I like it, but as you said it seems comfortable with slow development and different tones throughout. I love the western tone of the young Clark in Kansas segment including John Williams' score, which is clearly influenced by composer Aaron Copland, and also the casting of veteran actor Glenn Ford as his Earth father. Glenn Ford was a big Hollywood star in the 40s to 60s and made a number of westerns. Ford and Brando certainly add gravitas to the movie and balance out some of the odd or comedic roles.

This isn’t a bad movie, but Superman causing the Earth to rotate backwards to reverse time stretched my suspension of disbelief way beyond the breaking point. Don’t know why. Breaking the laws of physics is really common in movies, and most of the time it doesn’t bother me. This time it did. My favorite Superman movie is Man of Steel, though I have to say that Margot Kidder in this movie and its sequels is my favorite Lois Lane.

Thanks, Camilla, for reacting to "Superman" (1978). It's a fun mixture of comic book superhero and campy humor. I think Camilla might be too young to be in on the visual irony of the scene where Clark Kent rushes to a pay phone, only to discover the '70s open-air pay phones sans enclosed booth that they used to have in the comic books and occasionally in the old TV show. Of course, pay phones have completely left the building in today's modern era. She's also seen actor Glenn Ford, who play Jonathan Kent, in the film, "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994) where Red and the other convicts are watching a black and white movie, "Gilda", starring Rita Hayworth. Glenn Ford is in that scene where "she does that thing with her hair."
