Apparently Sony did have plans for a third, and fourth film and a sinister six spin off where six of Spider-Man’s villains team up to take him down. However due to the film underperforming, and Sony getting hacked those plans were scrapped. The movie flopping is what lead to the Sony/Marvel deal, so if it wasn’t for this movie flopping we probably wouldn’t have Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. Apparently one of the ideas was to somehow bring Gwen back from the grave, and introduce Venom. I think the problem with the film for me is what a lot of people have said. I feel like with the introduction of Rhino, Electro, and Green Goblin they were too interested in setting up the sinister six movie. I also feel like they should have just focused on Electro, and not Green Goblin. I know Goblin is the more iconic villain, but it would have been nice to focus on a new villain. Also apparently Electro isn’t blue, and is just a regular guy. I don’t understand the change, because it probably could have saved money not making him blue.

In the comics Peter has had several different romantic partners over the series very long run, Mary Jane just happens to be the longest and most well known love interest. At various points Peter has also been involved with Betty Brant, a co-worker at the Daily Bugle who appeared in the Sam Raimi series as J. Jonah Jamison's personal assistant, as well as Felicia Hardy AKA Black Cat who appears in this film as Harry Osborn's assistant, played by Felicity Jones. But Gwen was Peter's first true love and her death in the comics has always been an iconic moment in Spider-man lore. It has been one of the few deaths in Marvel that hasn't been reversed or somehow magically undone at a later date, making it a lasting part of Peter's story. Knowing her fate in the comics, a lot of fans knew this death was coming, even as early as the first Andrew Garfield film when we were introduced to Gwen instead of Mary Jane, but it became even more apparent that it would happen in this film as soon as we knew Green Goblin was being introduced again. This is another comic book moment adapted very closely from page to screen. Gwen being carried off by Goblin, dropped, and the long fall followed by the failed catch are all taken directly from the comic book page. This movie was definitely setting up a sequel or two, however those unfortunately never came to fruition after Sony cancelled this series due to under performing in their eyes. You gotta remember that the MCU was in full swing at this point in time and Sony was also hoping to cash in on the super-hero crossover craze. The "Sinister Six" would have been something like an Avengers level crossover event, but with some of Spider-man's most famous villains. The fact that Harry/Goblin is still alive at the end of this film and wants to put together a team "but keep it small" is almost certainly an indication that the Sinister Six was coming. In addition to Rhino who appears at the end we also get a glimpse of Dr. Octopus's arms and Vulture's wings held in storage in the "special projects" area of OsCorp. If only we had gotten The Amazing Spider-man 3!

Looking forward to your reaction to Jamie Foxx and Paul Giamatti as villains in this movie.

Those were solid web-slinging noises and actions @ ~2:00:45.

oh wow that's fun to know that Betty and Felicia are also little comic-book references/romantic characters! dang poor Gwen never stood a chance 🥲

yeah I meant to look him up in the outro but I looked him up after - I really am curious what the thought process behind the CGI blue was and what those discussions were like 🤣😭

Blind Entertainment

Out of curiosity I looked it up, and apparently they went with the blue, because they felt he’d look too campy with a more comic accurate adaptation.
