I just realized I should share what I've got going on with you guys, so it doesn't sneak up on anyone (me least of all)I'm planning on bringing the series to a merciful close soon. I'm not entirely ruling out further books in the same world or even more in the series, but not just yet. Give me some time. In the meantime, the next few chapters will serve as the endcap of the series for a while.Next month: I will be going on a road trip with my wife to visit her grandmother for her hundredth birthday.I plan on using that time to brainstorm and storyboard my next project.I'm planning on a palette cleanser for myself, something a bit more action-y, and less...eldritch horror buried inside your own mind, just waiting to wake up.I want to take the lessons and techniques I've accumulated and apply them all to a mindless tower climber series for funsies.I also want to try to write a slightly different flavor of LitRPG, which I'll call the 'gear-based' litRPG.If you've ever played Remnant 1 and 2, (or diablo 2-4) where you build a synergistic set of gear that allows you to do some pretty gnarly stuff when combined with the character's base stats and playstyle, you'll know what I'm aiming for.Example: a ring that shocks the enemy when you dodge, another ring that extends lightning duration, and a necklace that makes dodges boost your magic power. The build would be high stamina to dodge endlessly, with a quick weapon to take advantage of the stun granted by the shock effect to do crits. The characters can only wear a very limited amount of gear, so no wearing ten rings on each hand. The MC will of course have a massive advantage that others do not. I've got a great idea for HOW he gets it, but I'm still nailing down the specifics, and I'm gonna try to prevent the exponential growth glitch I foolishly included in Industrial Strength Magic. Also, how many Girlfriends should the MC have? (this is mostly for my amusement, and not legally binding, lol)

The polycule was cool - but oddly disconnected at times, I found. I liked heather and nat, and nat and Perry, but there wasn’t so much heather and Perry which I thought was a shame as they had really good chemistry. I say go for one, and if you want more, go full throuple balls-to-the-wall

Deathburn

I vote for no romantic or sexual relationships, but if that isn't an option I have no opinion on it

marty klinger

Let’s finish up stitched World Series! I’m looking forward to his apprenticeship!

GrandSageGand

I voted one but on the other hand intelligent magic item waifus that he has to balance against each other, one per gear slot he feeds them items that are slot specific to boost the power/gain synergistic abilities, like only he sees them and this is what makes him op but everyone else thinks he is schizophrenic

Kronos

Is Wake of the Ravager completely done? For some reason I’d thought that there was another book planned for it down the line lol. I like the sound of that Gear-based book!

Clifton Thrasher

Super excited for the coming story work but also want to know about WOTR, and the apocalypse system

Macronomicon

I have like, 70k on my computer, my plan is to quietly work on it in between until i have enough to publish and endcap the series...assuming i have the energy for it, lol.

vetro 26

This sounds so good can't wait I love mindless tower climbers just as much as anyone else

Sean

The tower climber sounds cool! Idk if this is obvious but you should look through path of exile unique items as well. There's tons of unique interactions and builds that use a bunch of interlocking mechanics to achieve some super fun stuff. The one I think most people know is the cast when damage taken ward looper. I think there are other arpgs with cool gear ideas too I'm just most familiar with Poe

Apotheosis

No girlfriends, just wives, each piece of gear needs to be acquired as a dowry from a noble house so his progression is finding new and interesting ways to convince noble women and their families to marry him in spite of his increasingly large harem.

Emily Gurnavage

While I dislike harems, 2 or *rarely* 3 can be good if everyone is a real character still and the relationship dynamics exist and feel real. Which is harder for every added person, until you end up with, as you worded the bottom vote option, "cardboard cutouts" (or worse). So id prefer either 1 or 2 (voted 2) but if its more than 1 again I feel like the dynamic needs to change a bit. The heather and nat and perry and nat thing was interesting and funny and at times worked well, but its a bit disappointing that Heather and Perry never fully worked things out (yet). They have grown closer, but I still wouldn't consider them in a romantic relationship (even a non physical one) with how they act. More like divorced parents sticking together till the kids grow up. Which I guess is a completely valid route for you to write them, but is just not awesome *for me personally* (others are welcome to love it). Id love to see a healthier and more loving relationship in the next go around, no matter how many people it involves or what the dynamic is. People acting like Heather and Perry can still have a good overall relationship, but those 2 do not to me and I love me a good romance (which I do realize is not the focus of this story).

thaughton2

I put two on the poll, but my actual answer is whatever number fits the characters, as long as the participants are fleshed out. I agree with Charles that Perry and Heather never really had a chance to shine, if there's another throuple, fleshing out all sides of the triangle would be great. But not fleshing out Perry and Heather's romance felt intentional at times, so maybe you already know that.

Parably

I want you to make fml so freaking precious that I can’t help but root for her despite her being absolute evil incarnate. Like she tries her best to be the evil but can’t help but fail and be good. lol I imagine a scene of her trying to poison baby rabbits but somehow she gives them a super power up and they create a rabbit kingdom that hail her as their god and no matter where she goes when she runs into a rabbit they call her goddess.

Apotheosis

Honestly, from the start to the end I never liked heather. Maybe cause gingers are destined to dislike each other. Maybe cause she's too similar to me, personality wise.

mhaj58

I think stories like Blood and Fur along with Animecon Harem prove that harem doesn’t have to be a trash genre. A monogamous series is enjoyable in itself but I enjoy the relationship dynamics and seeing how an MC navigate through women problems can be very interesting in its own right.

Scott Crawford

But have you considered 1 girlfriend and 1 boyfriend?

Charles Heller

All my cousins are gingers and they get along like a house on fire, so…

Ishanator

Is zero girlfriends an option?

Gam

I subscribe to beware of chicken as well and there wasn't even suppose to be a romance, but it naturally went that way. So I would suggest writing... love interests? And the ones that make sense stay. The others move on to worse pastures.

JhanicManifold

Super excited for the new story! You're honestly one of my favorite writers, and I've read a looooot of litRPG. If I can offer some feedback, I think part of what made Industrial Magic so satisfying to read was establishing early on a sense of Awe at the power of the strongest characters like Solaris. Like, some series have the MC increase power "into a vacuum" so to speak, and new more powerful characters get introduced as the MC gets more powerful. Those series tend not to be that satisfying, and it mostly feels like wheel-spinning. Getting early encounters with the Powerhouses of the world feels critical to making the MC's powerups not feel cheap. Some of the best moments of the series for me were Perry getting acknowledged by the powerful beings in the world.

Selkie

You do two girlfriends/love interests very well. It was well done here, it was well done in Wake with TWO love interests. It fell apart when you added more IMO.

David Weller

Never played Remnant, but I've played a lot of D2 and D3. I'm pretty sure I have an idea of how you want to make it. It could be really fun. Yes, I would like it if you avoided the infinite power glitch like you have in the Princess series and ISM series. 😆

Nematrec

How about an open relationship? 1 permanent girlfriend, but they both enjoy sometime with other people now and then. Sometimes even together.

HN

Is the MC a girl or a boy in this scenario? ;)

Big casino

The man says he wants less eldritch horror but chooses Remnant as his example. Press X to doubt. In all seriousness that sounds cool as hell for a system and I am excited for a new story. Not that I’ve gotten bored of this one or anything but I could sense it reaching critical mass for a while now and was hoping you wouldn’t give it the DBZ treatment and just increase the power levels till they mean nothing. I feel like nowadays everyone just lets a story go forever cause it makes money. I can’t wait to hear more of the new idea!

Scott Crawford

Either works, I'm here for some bisexual representation

cRoMaToR

Nice, always loved tower novels, but wasn’t WotR on your schedule next?

Macronomicon

yeah, D3 is about right, with all the equipment synergies.

Macronomicon

I dunnno man, I like girls a lot, like... a perfectly healthy and rational amount.

Kote's chronicles

I actually came to comments to ask this as well. ;-;

Paratus

At first I was thinking "Why not go back to Wake of the Ravager", then I saw this line: " less...eldritch horror buried inside your own mind, just waiting to wake up."

William

I'm not sure how I didn't notice that as one of Mac's recurring themes. I got "synergy optimization to the moon" and "girls girls girls" and "main character always has plenty of time to think", but not that one.

DM

Hey two of my favorite authors in one thread! Good times!

Exrotes

We don't need just a handful of girlfriends we need a series where the MC goes full Chinese Emperor and has hundreds of concubines constantly shipped to his door in an attempt at currying political favour that then get coralled into the factions by his actual wives having never even seen his face.

Jacob keaton

3 girls is good. It’s what Robert Jordan used so it will always hold a special place for me. And polycules are fine, but I also enjoy when the lovers have competing interests or are even antagonistic, only to have to sometimes set aside their differences for the good of the MC.

independent Thoughts

You have to go full Tenchi Muyo! Where the MC is swarmed but doesn't choose any of the girls.

Cyrus McEnnis

Honestly, the way you write relationships I'll be happy with anything

Khent Mercer

I really don't care how many as long as it's stable. Most harem books are all about the chase and a woman is largely forgotten as soon as she has been 'acquired' but of course we couldn't just have a player mc (this would not bother me) he most own them for eternity. I feel these mcs have more in common with serial killers than good romantic partners and the fact that I've never worried about this with you is why I support you on Patreon.

PJ LeBlanc

Hoard is a recent series on RR that has been handling '3 love interests' incredibly well. Would give it a read if you decide on 2+ again. I'm team 2-3 but not more than that.

Jacob keaton

And while I’ve never played the Remnant games, I have personally put an embarrassing number of hours into Diablo 2, followed by a number of hours in Diablo 3 that is only less embarrassing in comparison to the hours spend on Diablo 2. So while I don’t know what your means is of giving an advantage to the MC for the “gear based LitRPG” you’re planning but that sounds wonderful, I will give my experience of what made the most OP builds in my memory: rune words. Because they let you build up levels of synergies that you not only had no business reaching(up to 50% greater than would be normally possible), but they allowed you to completely skip putting points into even your main skills. My favorite of my many many disgustingly overpowered characters in D2 was a Holy Shock Paladin that put exactly zero of his ability points into Holy Shock. Rather, all his ability points went into abilities that made Holy Shock more powerful, and Frenzy. Frenzy let you attack a bunch of times and worked with, you guessed it, Holy Shock. Where did the points for Holy Shock come from? Two pieces of gear, rune words, that gave 15 points each. That’s a level 30 Holy Shock. You can’t even normally put points into abilities beyond 20. Honestly, the Frenzy was practically overkill. Holy Shock is an aura ability , and adding damage to your attacks is basically a bonus, the main point is to do AOE damage. I only ever even saw bosses, and even that was basically only for long enough to wave hello. So anyway, outside of runewords, the only other thing I can think of that would be a great way for an MC to be overpowered is to ignore(or even just reduce) stat restrictions. Stat points are for vitality, with quite literally every other point being planned out in advance to save even one more point for vitality. Damage from stats is worthless compared to what you get from gear, and damage from gear is worthless if you’re dead. So yeah, sounds like this series will be right up my alley.

Hayden Leech

How about one partner and and equally hot girl that’s trying to steal him from the actual love interest. Hes definitely tempted and she’s not making it easy… but no! Could be fun drama.

A

normally i wouldn't have a strong opinion but at this point you need to write a monogamous relationship just to prove you can

Smit

Gear Based LitRPG sounds amazing. I've always thought that conditional passives were fun in games. Reading a litrpg about BuildCrafting is right up my alley. Also as a player of remnant and Diablo I approve, lmao. Maybe make it so that the MC is an enchanter who can have a custom equipment slot or something of a 'Conditional Phrase' or a way to link up a build that didn't work before but does now. I.E. If he had a Thorn Effect and everything scaled off of getting hit, but his conditional phrase turned 'Getting hit' to 'Hitting Something'

Gerald Monroe

Couple of things unexplored with harem mechanics: For periods of my life I have had more than one girlfriend. Bruh. It's not all its cracked up to be. Very very tiring as it's difficult to have enough energy for both women. And another thing unexplored : top notch women, especially when the MC is in his slow rampup phase, have other dudes they are interested in. Sometimes someone arguable better in some key way than the MC, sometimes they just go with whoever's around. The stereotypical way this is handled is the MC explores around, running into 10/10 stacked hotties around every corner and corner bakery, they join his party, are amazing and eat up a bunch of text time describing how powerful they are, powerful and hot. And anyways then another joins, and another. No dudes allowed. And they just kinda wait their turn with the MC. This ain't how it works.

STORRM

aww man your not doing a full sci-fi nanobot litrpg with a mech-tinker power set on an abandoned space station in deep space as a fight to survive with waifu bots because every one ells turned in to a dead space horror.... hmm you know, maybe you could do a story with out existential horror.

Dennis

How about a female MC?

Gardor

No romance? Just a dude actioning around, not being codependent with and horny for the second female character he meets?

Mahadma

Happy birthday to your grandma! @mindless tower climber: I found the single-mindedness of Dungeon Devotee refreshing, I'd welcome such a fast-paced and focused story from you. @relationships: I'm intrigued by the idea of you doing a single-person romance, just because you're doing thruples really well and you've done a couple of them already.

SunderGoldmane

I have enough stories on deck with female MCs. If it’s a female mc I’m out.

SunderGoldmane

“Path of ascension” had a first fling in its early chapters that I thought was fantastic. The character had multiple experiences, wasn’t harem, felt real, clean nice no drama moving on afterwards. It was nice. If you wrote multiple independent relationships with a a few girls during the tower climb and wrote them with the intent of also writing how they move on then that would be new and interesting to read.

SunderGoldmane

Multiple separate relationships at different stages of the characters climb of the tower would have a chase effect without ending after acquisition. A cute girl you meet in base town and both like each other’s company doesn’t have to be the same girl who watches your back while fighting the last boss. And it is possible to have had mutual fun with both in one life and it not be messy. I’d love to read a story that explores that angle of a relationship being it’s own complete little story arc based on the stage of the characters life. Goals change, dragging people along with goals they don’t want leads to nasty break ups and needless hurt. Semi rambling, I really want to see max tackle multiple independent relationships within a single story and involving a single MC. (Using the word single so many times has me thinking how interesting it would be to read the single/bachelor/in between relationships stage inside a tower climber story.

Emily Gurnavage

Eh - sounds fun at first glance, but "no means no", yknow? Its always a bit creepy and offputting when a character continues going after one thats made it clear they aren't interested. Doubly so if they are in a relationship already. Stalkers ain't cool unless its a scene of them getting their asses beat. Swap the genders, and maybe my point is clearer. Many people would be pretty upset about a guy constantly trying to seduce a woman who has already said no and is in a happy relationship.

Romil Aggarwal

I usually hate gear-based stories. There are quite a few of these on RRL. I especially hate them if they involve multiple chaps of making new gear by mixing magicon with flowing nanium over ultra meta yoga flame or made up sh*t like that. but then superhero genre was quite stale but you did a banger job so I'm excited! and tower climb stories are kinda my fav.

Lecompte Dusang

I mean... If your gonna go harem, might as well go open harem. No first rate person, outside of a historical time piece (emperor and his second palace) is going to play second fiddle to one guy. I think it is okay to have adult relationships in novels... you hit it off, have a great couple of weeks and then you both agree to move on. Can even have the occasional Netflix and chill after that... doesn't mean you're a thing. I'm excited for the climax of Paradox. You've done well. Enjoy the time away.

Citrusyyy

PLEASE MORE PRISON SHOWER SCENES ;) If you know you know. Only the OGs will remember <3

Stephen E Wilson Jr.

Two girls is enough for fantasy in my mind. 3 at max. 1 is too realistic. I don't want realistic in my escapism.

daniel koval

I could seriously go for a really well written one on one relationship

keubpard

JUST ONE PLEASEPLEASEPLEASEPLEASE

Mechalith

As much as harem fiction can be fun, the trade-off of getting ten nearly-characters instead of one or two actual characters usually isn't worth it, IMO.

BlaueFeder

kinda confused, for what story is this poll? (team 1 gf always)

John Nielsen

Any plan on finishing Industrial Magic?
