So I've commissioned a cover for book 1, and i wanted to go with that dynamic -fighting a million people at once- vibe that the Conan covers did so well. The artist then shot back with 'what is the character wearing'. and I drew a complete blank. What I'm wondering is, since the joke of the entire story is that everything about him is exaggerated, should we have him dressed conan-esque with as many muscles defined as possible, because the cover represents a dramatized retelling of how it went...or should we have him dressed like a normal adventurer with full-length pants and shirt? Thoughts?

Gaunt

Pants with lots of pockets! Threadbare, ripped shirt a la orphan and he's kinda rough on clothes

Deinos

Soooo... Did you ever watch Borat?

Matt

Main cover be the Conan version and have a secondary cover on the first page like some books do where he's dressed practical? The way the exaggerated intro quotes lead into the accurate retelling for the chapter

Fabhar

How would Jason Salazar describe him? I suppose that's the real question.

Forint

I say you play further into the legend. A thick fur cloak and tassels of cloth everywhere. Is he even a man? Or some creature of bone and shadow stalking the tower?

Pseudo

He wears something with snake skin.

Forint

Ooohhh, maybe a little bit of religious symbology? Like the Jesus halo?

The Golem Crafter

I do love this idea lol. I also love stories that have art of certain impact full scenes as well

Gibby

Maybe a vest and pants? Something sleeveless to show off the arms

Minh Tran

If he is fighting a ton of enemies it makes me think of when he's trying to escape from that army so maybe ill fitting clothes and super makeshift and shoddy weapons, a phantom hand above him with arrow heads flying out of it.

Seth

As dramatic as possible.

Ethan B.

I love the idea of it being exaggerated with maybe even women Swooning in the farther background.

Macronomicon

You know, after you said that, i had the idea of the inner cover just being him with the exact same pose wielding a pillow at the orphanage.

Cuban Pete

The most mismatching looking armor reminiscent of a low level MMO character using what they have

dragonsFire

If we're going with fighting a million people at once, why not use the scene from the 6th floor where Will gets into a barfight and has laws written about him?

Deinos

For heaven's sake no man, that is insane! Give him a G-String like for normal people.

Imp

He's an underfed orphan with a rogue build. Strength is his lowest stat. I think going Conan-esk is a bit misleading about who and what Will is, even for an exaggeration. I'm thinking more like Errol Flynn swasbuckler with torn up tunic, pants and cape

LucasTheLost

My first thought was the over the shoulder thong thing.

Eli Loeb

Dramaaaaaa!!!!

austin kutz

A Jesus halo that's actually a snake eating its own tail, but not like an adult snake, nothing majestic, more like a baby snake eating its own tail. Then each book can have a slightly bigger snake until it's coiling around a tower to the heavens for the last book cover

DeathlyOreo

While I think the idea of having him be an uber-muscular hero-of-legend on the cover is hilarious, I'd personally prefer it be more in line with his actual character (young scrawny orphan, mismatched set to get the best bonuses, uncaring of clothes if they aren't relics). The conan thing is funny after being pointed out, but I probably would've just been confused if I saw a generic "strong guy" on the cover. And covers with ripped, shirtless bodybuilders fighting half a dozen enemies are a dime a dozen in the litrpg space. It would have to be REALLY exaggerated for it to not come across as just a standard premade male MC fantasy cover, imo.

Lebog

This is unrelated to the question. But give him a kilt for his future equipment. I want to see the mental gymnastics he plays with it

closeded

Normal makes more sense, I think loth would recommend more diplomatic outfits if he was dressed like a barbarian

Joshua Gunty

Agree with everyone else that huge muscles would be hilarious but fairly misleading to potential readers literally judging a book by its cover. If you go with a bunch of mismatched garbage gear on the book 1 cover you can have him continuously improve his armor noticeably on each cover, show his growth.

Darren Deloach

I kind of want to see a "split screen" of both. So the reality vs the legend

Cameron

I think it'd be interesting to have multiple cover types. Each one more exaggerated than the last, before culminating with the reality. A desperate kid in way over his head.

Schuh

He's obviously wearing an armless tuxedo

God

I always imagined him as scrawny and agile since he was raised in an orphanage and is still a teen, plus he is a scout build. Maybe that should be the base and the buff adventurer should be like a translucent aura that shows how he is perceived by others.

Ano Ano

Should definitely be the full Conan rippling thews and metal banana hammock. Then maybe in a little bubble to the side, a little fully clothed, grubby chibi Will.

ReadingObsessed

Patchwork-leather chest piece. Gaudy golden bracers. Torn plaid pants. 100% a 'I'm wearing this for the effects' build.

Jake Malony

Honestly, Pick any early/middle scene in the story and illustrate that. In which case, it's likely sub level 10 when Will really leaned into his scout/ranger archetype.

Michael

Split it down the middle and show both, Conan with the axe on the left side with the mask, thin clothing on the right that’s ‘for the stats’ It can be a thing for him ‘wearing’ his legend

GoodMornin2U2

Have him wear completely mismatched armor. Like how people in RPG’s equip whatever armor has the best stats, even if it’s pink and has rainbows and doesn’t match with their dark heavy armor

Manu Sniter

Mismatch armor, and not bulky as Conan but maybe like Blade.

Kurt A

Definitely give him the goat mask

Psykohamster

Both. Both is good. Have the Conan-esque figure fighting a bunch of monsters with the real Will super imposed in front of him, showing the difference between the legend and the scrawny reality. Also, I will finally be able to throw my money at you (for the book).

Emily Gurnavage

Book 1? I think goin wild with it for book 1 fits the story better. The cover for book 2 is where he should look more accurate. The early chapters had a lot more of the pre-chapter funny-ness (I imagine its hard to come up with many new ones by now so you gotta spread em out) and a lot of emphasis on the public perception of Will being dramatically larger than life. The rumors were worked into the story at times and his reputation as a sort of local legend was important. So the option with crazy muscles and wildly fighting off a crowd sounds like a good fit for book 1 to me.

FossilWreckers

Real Will in a face off with the legend.

HorizonEyes

as an artist myself, grab as many reference photos as you can, try not to just say what you want. Use Pinterest for items and smaller things if you want to add that if you can, Pinterest gives you boards which you can mash things together with, which will allow the artist (and myself) to compile it onto the character. Will should have all the gear that you have described before, or maybe something that you want from the future, otherwise I would go with a ram head, like before but with his rings, missing hand showcases with more lighting, (lighting and shading is also very important to convey if you want a good ending result, because it can change everything and how it looks. I remember you describing Will, so It also depends are you going with his legend or Will himself? The legend would be really cool, seeing a godlight being with a goat skull mask, with crazy muscles, flight, and the tower in the background, I would also suggest placing him near the origin of the gravity goats because that is what we know of him, otherwise you may need to create where his father was from, which we haven't gotten to yet in the story. It's not for me to decide, but here are some things that may help if you wanted to see an example of what you could do for them in order to get better results: https://pin.it/1Cu9R8Ev2 There is another book that has a MC with missing hand: The Wraith's Haunt series has several covers that have the motif's and such similar to your own series.

Gessy

If it's all in one book and not two then split of beginner scrawny goat boy and legend with full set... *∆* can't wait to see end result!!!

Heedless

Skinny kid build, but posed and equipped like a Conan novel cover. Really heighten the contrast between the legend and the boy, just as in the books.

Quazzy

I'd be waaaay more likely to pick up a book with a scrawny kid on it doing seventy different things to fend off as many enemies (flotila knife-fight scene would be AWESOME) than another generic power fantasy cover

Mariposa

In book one he wasn't as built as he would be now. So I agree with others that he should be lean, but with defined muscles. He didn't exactly have enough money to put on any fat or heavy muscle. Second his shirt should be sleeveless. That way it can highlight his lack of hand while fighting off this huge mob. Which would make him epic. Regular pants, boots, and his relic jewelry. Maybe some minor embellishment to give him some presentation.

Cyrus McEnnis

I'd go the other way. Sure have the Conan style cover, but have Will portrayed as a skinny boy in the clothing he got from his foundation quest - clean shirt & oversized pants that are possibly oversized for him to grow into. Basically so he looks like a struggling orphan waif who's crushing his enemies before him and eating the lamingtons of their womenfolk.

Joe

DO NOT FORGET TO BE COMICAL 👍. William Oh gives us many laughs, and his humble beginnings are wonderful. For first book cover it would be awesome to be similar to the Conan barely dressed with barely anything, with the mask added for dramatics; dressed like post first trial fight: scrawny, lean tone of muscles as in the beginning. The horn outline already looks great for the mask. Remember his fighting style before he got his lessons from Bakton and Ghoul? Lean into “Every fight you’ve ever been in since you became a Climber has been a white-knuckled ride on a wild horse that could throw you any second, constantly bouncing from desperate gambit to desperate gambit […]”. Your writing has been great, the story is funny, fresh, outrageous. And the beginnings similar to “diary of wimpy kid” is great for luring attention, and a captivating read.

Kote's chronicles

Obviously they are wearing blood. A splash here. A drop there.

雨宿りAma yadori

You have two very solid options. Does one of them work better for the cover of book 2? If so you can do both without compromise.

Joe

Wow, that edit made my post really lengthy. Sorry for going too long on it. At first, i was ignoring the greater than life legend, and outrageous exaggerations, little by little you sold it to me.

Joe

Is that the fight where he comes out with clothes all shredded, rags barely covering him? I like this idea.

Ral

I like the cover portraying 'The Legend of William Oh.' I don't know marketing but I like the affect of the cover creating an image of what the paranoid orphan will become, or the stories of him.

Joe

Or behind the current illustration fight, the Legend, standing imposingly behind him, equipped with the Family set, arms crossed, bigger, taller, larger than life. A superimposition between both sides of the story. Also, it creates a luring cover, which sparks curiosity for the story contained within.

Joe

And the colar has to pop outrageously like the coffin heist party. 😂

Joe

Legend standing behind him arms crossed, tall as myth?

Luke Hardy

A lvl 15 artists depiction of a Jason Salazar story.

Joe

Hahahhaha

Darren Deloach

That's good. I was thinking more the same scene one with Will fight a small group in mismatch armor, scrambling to winand one scene showing the "Jason" style retelling with a hundred enemies, effortlessly defeating them etc

Mrfacemanlol

Split the cover right down the middle 1 half is the “legend” the other half is the real will

Trathnonen

Definitely like the idea of a giant, hulking barbarian of a man rendered in full detail, but with a skinny punk's shadow behind him to represent the real Will. Or definitely something involving snake tattoos or a hydra or some such.

David Burchfield

I really like the the idea of a split cover with Jason in the Middle, one showing a desperate ragged scrawny kid looking Will with that vicious intelligent gleam in his eye and smirk on his face dressed in mismatched scraps, and the other side showing Conan Will in A Barbarian Harness handling the same situation with utter ease but without that gleam.

Skibbidi

Jason describing Embellished William Oh to a crowd. And William off to the side shrugging and killing something

Moon Winchester

I’ve been reading this entire book with the mental image that Will is just butt naked, wearing a goat mask and I’m not gonna change that

Cozy Book Corner

It would fit how Bee, Ria, and Anna have been popping up as tangled and saving the day, too!

Max Lopo

The essicated faces of his enemies stapled unto his pauldrons.

Notcreepycreeper

1 armed scrawny ass kid wearing an extremely imposing/borderline grotesque goat mask. Other arm is ghostly but giving almost skeleton hand vibes. Think eldrich/cryptid Instead of Conan or average adventurer. Except his pose is all classic Conan

Serpentssnare

Give his mask blingingly glowing eyes! Like in "The Thing" movie poster. Otherwise, you could have him wirey/skinny for accuracy because he's usually outsmarting his enemies even in Jason's stories.

Raivshard

Or the other way around, skinny punk rendered in full detail, with an absolute unit of a shadow

Max Lopo

1) too many hands. 2) dude should be scrappy if it's book 1

Not You

Exaggerated backwards. Everyone else is super fancy/decked out, and he’s slaughtering them while dirty and wearing threadbare stuff

SunderGoldmane

You could have him in nothing but a loincloth and necklace. Then have one of the first jason excerpts retooled as a kind of forward/preamble/titlecard in the book talking about how he once fought a million people in his skivvies. “William oh was born strong enough to fight a million people and he once did exactly that while having his junk and trunk artfully covered by a piece of fine linen cloth. The cloth was self cleaning.” Or something like that. It would let you lean into that conan imitation and set the tone for the book before even the first chapter begins. Also sets precedence for you to take similar liberties with the cover of your next book and have jason integrate it into lore friendly.

FreakShow

Full Conan, and don’t forget the over exaggeration of the companions he’ll be protecting from the enemies

McIntosh Ewell

I'd say you should go with full Sinbad regalia from the Magi anime

Nate

* the cloth is also said to have the scent of a million different roses

SunderGoldmane

“I heard it smelled like liliac and goosenbeeries.” “Goosenberries? No way! It was enchanted to be scentless!” “I heard was a handkerchief from a a noble lady. “I heard it was an apron gifted to him from a baker down main street.”

ParadoxFox

I feel like the boar mask guy from Demon Slayer is a good character model

Mrfacemanlol

Same stance killing a horde of enemies just one side is covered in blood scrawny as shit and beat to hell. The other side is a pristine and ripped Will with much more enemies that make that side will look much larger

SunderGoldmane

I vote for a secondary art of him wielding a pillow at the orphanage!

Benjamin Walsh

He should be dressed the way Jason would describe him.

Benjamin Walsh

Conan-esque but one thing exaggerated and missing his pants (or something).

dijet

Absolutely exaggerated, it'd feel like Jason drew the cover and I'm all for it.

m.a.w.m.

It's been a month since the last post, what's happening?
