So, first of all, the audiobook for book 1 of The Legend of William Oh should be available for Pre-order March 3rd of next year, releasing two weeks later. That being said, the audiobook people are looking for comparisons to other already published books to help them figure out exactly where to best advertise it.So they want stuff like 'The Legend Of William Oh is like XXX but funnier/more violent/Etc.'Or, 'The Legend of William Oh is like if XXX and XXX got together and had a mutant baby.'My problem is I don't know enough modern stories to give them good comparisons, so I was hoping to ask you guys what stories you compare mine to when talking about it.And yes, this is cheating on my homework from Soundbooth, but as long as nobody tells them, we should be cool.

It's like Dungeon Crawler Carl, but less morbid. As much as I like DCC, the entire premise is morbid as hell. (Anything that can ostensibly be categorised as "indoors" is now meat slurry to be chimerised into monsters for the "survivors")

GryphonKnight

William Oh is like Calvin, from Calvin & Hobbs, grew up in a tower climbing world with Hobbs as his friend Loth

Adam McGuire

If Hitchhiker's guide to galaxy had a baby with Dungeon Crawler Carl

Ethan B.

The cradle story for pacing might be a fair comparison maybe?

Natalie

I'd say more like Discworld meets Hitchhikers, meets DCC and they all watch early seasons Rick and Morty

NorkNork

If Dennis the Menace and Ready Player One had a hyper-violent baby with a baker girl fetish.

JT

The Legend of William Oh is as if Dungeon Crawler Carl and the Name of the Wind had a malformed child. William Oh is a hyped up version of Tower Of God Crossed with the wit of Dungeon Crawler Carl. I don't know. I think yall should lean into the self referential takes like you do at each chapter. It's what caught my interest.

Paul Rauner

Frodo and Deadpool had a baby

Macronomicon

well, it's not going to be a blurb that the audience gets to read (i think?) so self-referential doesn't really have any context.

Arnon Parenti

William OH is the best Tower litrpg you'll ever read.

ReadingObsessed

William Oh is like if Primal Hunter was about a teenage Chuck Norris

IA

So...I was having lunch with Soundbooth when you posted this, and my phone was on the table. They know you're outsourcing their homework, but I swear I didn't go out of my way to tell them 😳

Moon Winchester

William O is gon from Hunter X Hunter and Loki from the Loki TV show both tries to raise a kid. He ended up being the sort of weird middle ground.

blue turtle

The general tone of your reminds me of butcher of ghandora. In the manner that both your story, and theirs are set in rather dark settings; and yet somehow manages to be comical. Structurally your story reminds of the manwa Tower Of God. Combined the two and feel like it pretty close to your novel

Ranger Science

I’d compare it to Dungeon Crawler Carl. Your audiences have heavy overlap, and it doesn’t really matter how accurate / close the comparison is; ride the DCC popularity wave :)

Frank

I’m gonna second all the “it’s like if dungeon crawler Carl was less depressing” posts.

ContraCowboy

If every litrpg daydream about what I would do to break the system was a book

Alexis Lionel

William OH is like if Chuck Norris was reincarnated.

Not You

“Mark of the fool” has been hitting some of the same notes for me

Dorian Grizzle

If Terry Pratchett played video games

karmaslap

Just please don't intentionally miscategorize it as cyberpunk for extra views like many scummy publishers/aithors do

Enko

Weird chapter

Kelfu

Dungeon crawler carl if he actually did something

ParadoxFox

It reminds me a little of Senlin Ascends in that there’s a deeper mystery around a tower that seems to have been constructed by godlike beings. However, a big part of William Oh is the action and the best comparison there is Cradle. Will smurfing around reminds me of Eithan in particular. When it comes to builds and litrpg, I don’t have a great comparison (maybe Shadow Slave, but that’s a bit more obscure) but that’s one of the things I really enjoy about the story.

Andrew

Going to throw it out there. He who fights with monsters. It has some of the same wit and charm with the main character and the interesting magic system. I think William Oh goes more mathematical than word-y of HWFWM for the magic system. Also HWFWM goes more introspection\moody in later books similar to DCC.

austin kutz

It's technically a tower climber LitRPG. You may not like it, but compare it to those

Cyrus McEnnis

Chuck Norris is absolutely the thing that comes to mind with the hype of Oh. The game system itself has always put me in mind of a tower climbing Diablo clone. So I'd put it thus: "It's as if Chuck Norris & Diablo had a love-child who's trying their best to exploit their way through a world similar to that of Second Life Ranker!"

Roeland

As said by William Oh's hype man

Sce7tm

Not overly modern and a bit outside the LitRPG scene, but what about Artemis Fowl crossed with Percy Jackson? Kind get the adventure vibe of PJ with the smart/morally gray protag of AF.

Cyrus McEnnis

Actually: It's the story of best kobold Loth as she navigates the confined human society of a tower climbing RPG with the assistance of her minion, Chuck "William Oh" Norris.

McIntosh Ewell

Young Sinbad from the Magi anime is what I think of in terms of Will and his crew. I also feel like they'd fit right in with the Bridge Burners of the Malazan army. Though Will's Legend is much less grimm in theme. I'm also reminded of the spaghetti space western feel of shows like Trigun and Outlaw Star

SunderGoldmane

“The legend of william Oh is like if that one chick you really like had a baby with that one other chick you really really like and was raised by chuck norris” ?

Hell 5pawn

This isn't cheating. It's research. It's like the adventures of Percy Jackson, the shenanigans of a typical D&D game, and with a dash of the hype from Chuck Norris.

Mirah H

The Witcher meets One Piece in Hades style

Mirah H

The comparison should be accurate because as a reader, I do use these comparisons for choosing things and have been put off of authors from poor comparisons

Not You

Also I’m crazy, this has chrysalis vibes too. Humor, power, presence. Also crazy lore dumps and jokes before chapters

Eman

William Oh to me is like if Vox Machina were on a quest to clear and discover the origin of the Backrooms.

austin kutz

What jokes? Those are genuine prophecies

unmellow the gamer

It's the humor of the perfect run with the action and emotional investment of azarinth healer.

Ranger Science

Ehh, guess I didn't convey the idea well enough, because *yes*, you don't want to be misleading... but there's a practical limit to how effective a comparison vs a description can be. I can say "Dresden Files is Die Hard x Harry Potter", and I can say "WO is DCC but light-hearted and they're going up instead of down". I can expand on those, but the more I expand on them, the more they're just a description of the work hobbled by trying to be a comparison. A comparison (IMO) just has to hook someone enough, based on their like / dislike of the other work, to get them to read the description. Do you have specific examples I can go look at, to better understand where you're coming from?

DM

As if Miles Cameron’s “The Red Knight” met the cunning and determination of Craig Schaefer’s Harmony Black.

Natalie

For sure. DCC is a good story but by the gods is it macabre

Natalie

A good point. Maybe: William Oh is like if He who fights with monsters and Dungeon Crawler Carl had a child that wasn't an edge lord?

Cj

I work at a book store, and I always recommend your stuff to fans of Matt dinnamins Dungeon Crawler Carl. It the only litrpg I know of to get a full nationwide release, I always say your stuff is like DCC but wither a closer focus to the actual litrpg builds and systems

Mus

Xxx but funnier/bettter is bad form. Comparisons that say if you like this because of Xxx so you will like this because of Xxx are better as it lifts both parties and doesn't put another story down

ParadoxFox

This is actually the best description yet

Dax C

I’d say the tower climbing, system and abilities remind me a lot of how the Cradle series feels. I think people are comparing it with DCC as a compliment - Cradle and DCC are both “in the system, kicking ass… but there’s something external that’s going to happen”. DCC is definitely darker though. I personally disliked HWFWM past book 4, but that’s another one that leans that way. If readers like litrpg, witty/smart op protagonists and system tower climbers and competency porn… that’s where/who to advertise to imo

Chris Gast

I realize this is a bit late, but maybe you can use it sometime. My wife says "its like milk and oreos had a baby" and, "this book is great for people who have eaten peanut butter and jelly".
