“Milord!” a grease-stained host shouted, intruding on Vincent’s limited quiet time.

He rubbed his throbbing temple and turned in his chair.

“What is it?” He asked, carefully keeping his voice neutral.

“Lookouts spotted something coming out of Steve.” The host said, thumbing over his shoulder.

“What?”

“Some kind of island?”

What? Is stuff passing through it’s digestive system unharmed now that it’s undead? That would make it hard to do what I want to do with it, Vincent thought, standing.

If the snake was shitting out all the islands he was trying to lock down so Zodiac had no place to run, then he would have to get more creative. Possibly by sticking the islands to the outside and wrapping the snake around them.

As long as they were close enough that Steve’s Cannibalize explosion would wipe them off the map, then it was fine.

It wasn’t a major problem, just an annoyance.

“It appears to be accelerating away from st-?”

Vincent was out the door before the man finished saying ‘away’.

The walls of the barge flashed past Vincent’s eyes, and he barely felt the stairs under his feet, emerging into the cold air of the 11th Floor.

“Spyglass.” Vincent said, feeling one drop into his palm.

He raised the glass to his eye and followed the pointing finger of his lookout, orienting on a twinkle of blue light.

Vincent’s mental finger was hovering over the string of Cannibalize, an instant away from vaporizing everyone on the Floor and using a Door to escape.

Wait.

Vincent saw that the Key Site was being tugged along behind the floating island, facing directly back towards Steve.

They’re wary of the explosion.

Damn. They’ve already figured it out.

Part of Vincent wanted to detonate Steve and be done with it, but he didn’t think it would have the effect he wanted if he blew it now.

Zodiac and his illusionist were probably far enough away to buy Doors and leave before the wave of flames hit them, and the people on the island might be spared by the Key Site acting as a breakwater.

It would amount to nothing. Or nearly nothing.

DAMN!

Enemies had just spent unknown hours to days inside the undead he had been proud of. Rather than be warded off, they had gone inside the damn thing, where he would’ve been able to kill them instantly…if he’d known they were there.

And now they had a shield against the Floor-wiping explosion, stolen out from his under his nose.

It was incredibly frustrating.

Vincent took a deep breath and let go of his anger, numbing the parts of his brain responsible.

Simply a move on the board. You make your, they make theirs. Anger is unproductive.

“Bring us to the island. We need to take it from them.”

“Is it Zodiac?” the host beside him asked.

“Too slow. This is someone else.” Vincent said, handing off the spyglass. “Someone who thinks they’re clever.”

In his mind, Vincent matched the aggressive, flamboyant, near-suicidal move against the other Lords that might’ve come to kill him.

Marksman would just shoot me. Or perhaps detonate Steve from a distance prematurely.

Bakton’s approach would be more balanced. He would never expose himself to that kind of risk.

Ghoul might manipulate Cannibalize itself to counter the spell.

Akul is too old for that shit.

The only people young enough to do something that stupid are the new Lords.

The only new Lords actually powerful enough to accomplish it are Carrie Envar and maybe…William Oh?

William Oh’s Stronghold is on the 10th Floor. It would likely be much easier for him to attack than it would be for Carrie Envar, whose Stronghold is on the 14th.

…It’s probably William Oh.

William Oh: Adaptable. Rogue/Ranger, Relic-focus Build with a sub in Terrain. Able to steal Relics from other Climbers, modify terrain, rumors of teleportation Abilities, Dimensional Storage, telekinesis, and unknown-yet-powerful detection Abilities.

In short, a slippery son of a bitch.

A thought occurred to Vincent.

He’s the one they told me wounded Tassos…how?

If I come after him myself, he’ll target my Relics to try and cripple my Build, and if I send a fae, he’ll likely have improved whatever technique he used to wound Tassos.

…Let’s just hit him with everything we have then, and overwhelm any fancy tricks.

Playing it conservatively would only give Wiliam Oh the ability to adapt and counter.

He had to be crushed from the onset. He might be shifty, but he wasn’t overwhelmingly strong.

He couldn’t take everyone at once.

…I could probably take everyone at once, Will thought as he studied his stats as well as the barge approaching from a distance.

The air in front of him was lensed in such a way that it made the distant barge filled with Climbers seem close enough to touch.

The problem was…

The hundred or so Climbers on the surface of the Barge, looking back at him with misplaced determination…weren’t actually infected with Norworms.

They were just stupid.

According to Anna, Void had stolen their support from Zodiac by removing norworms from the brains of dozens of their people and then accused Zodiac of being the real worm.

Since Zodiac had kept everything under wraps, he really did look like the bad guy.

Now, if Will unleashed Hammer of God on these Climbers, he would probably vaporize every single one of these misled bastards in the blink of an eye.

They were not as resilient as the island-sized snakes, no matter how much Resistance they had.

And if Will slaughtered hundreds of Climbers inside the Tower, the System might penalize him harshly.

Meat-shields.

Will’s current Build was optimized for overwhelming firepower, which didn’t work for this particular problem, since he didn’t actually want to kill all of them.

The sickle of Malignant Silence is also out. Even more so than the Hammer of God. It’s just too deadly.

Which leaves…the ring of explosive Doughmaking – unlikely – the wand of the Undead retainer, and the Coiled Serpent Amulet…assuming I steal it back from Heath, who it is currently loaned out to.

…And if I sneak Phantom Hand over there and hit Void with a projectile it’ll kill half his crew too, and it won’t deal any impact damage to his meatsuit, which is what I actually want.

The Coiled Serpent Amulet was ideal for single-target elimination. With his current Build, it would let him leap in and hit someone for outrageous amounts of damage before leaping back out.

Unless he’s got damage reflection or a damage chain.

With that in mind, Will settled on the wand.

He wanted subtlety.

Switch to Wand of the Undead Retainer?

Yes.

Pop!

Gods, I hate that sensation. Will thought as the finger housing Hammer of God popped and blackened, with the sensation of pulling out of the joint. It always sent shivers up his spine.

Will’s stats dropped precipitously, mostly Strength, by over three hundred. But the benefit...

180->125 Charges remaining.

Eleven butlers emerged from the other side, bowing as they formed out of ectoplasm.

“Stevie, Billy-bob, Noob…the other eight.” Will said, scanning the assembled butlers.

Over the course of his Lordship, they’d been indispensable for the purpose of making Will seem like he had any idea what he was doing.

Everyone wondered how his clothes were always clean, his paperwork always done on time, his home always immaculate.

It was easier for Will to let everyone believe that William Oh was superhumanly organized, competent and didn’t need sleep.

“What do you need, my lord?” Stevie spoke for the group as the senior-most butler.

“I want you to go over there and harry the enemy.” Will said, expanding the view so they could see the approaching barge as well. “Sus out if they have any tricks up their sleeve. Generate some fear of ghosts for me to use too, if you can. Don’t kill any of the Climbers save a rather skinny fellow wearing a fire opal crown. You’ll know him when you see him. Be careful around that one. He’s a necromancer, so he may be able to damage or turn you.”

“As you wish.” The eleven butlers sank into the floor and flitted away.

They were over twenty times stronger than they had originally been, but that didn’t mean they were unstoppable. Their original strength hadn’t been substantial, and they were up against level thirty-five to fifty individuals.

And now for something to distract them from the ghosts. They’re ill-suited to direct assaults.

Will took out the clay idol of Ouroboros.

Sourdough

125->124 Charges remaining.

Will flew outside the Island, and broke the clay idol over his knee, using Sourdough at the same time.

An Immortal Serpent the size of an island appeared beneath him. Will grabbed it with Phantom Hand and flung it forward as the clay idol slowly began to reconstitute itself.

“Scare them good, but don’t kill!” Will shouted after it, pocketing the clay idol.

One of the best benefits of Sourdough, aside from combining Relics, was changing a consumeable Relic, to a re-usable one, just by paying Charge.

Will’s Resistance and Ranger Archetype boost were high enough that it took just under a week to come back, rather than a month. With the Ring of Explosive Doughmaking, that became instantaneous.

To Will’s surprise, the Immortal Serpent began accelerating, somehow generating speed by wiggling in midair.

Well, if it works.

Will had been worried that it might miss entirely, but since it could swim through the air…that didn’t seem to be a problem.

Phantom Eye.

123 Charges remaining.

Will sent the eye out with his Phantom Hand for targeted strikes.

Maybe the snake would be enough of a distraction. Maybe Void would feel Undead treading on his terrain.

Would he be able to detect Phantom Hand as well?

Let’s see how this plays out.

Across the vast gulf of distance, Vincent was peering through a spyglass, when a massive snake appeared in between them and the island.

Well, it’s William Oh. Vincent hadn’t heard of a summoning ability like that, but the kid had a snake motif, so it was as good as a signature.

That means I need to watch out for Phantom Hand. Vincent thought as the surrounding hosts jumped to action, manning their whaling stations as the snake grew larger and larger.

Where is it?

Minutes later, rather than Phantom Hand, Vincent felt no less than eleven incorporeal undead flitting across the space between them, their presence as clear as a lighthouse beacon.

Does he have a necromancer with him? Vincent thought, frowning as he reached out and seized the approaching undead. Not a very powerful one, that’s for sure.

The undead showed surprising initiative, killing themselves rather than surrendering to his control.

Is that all-

Vincent felt a flicker of miasmatic structure behind them, over a hundred yards distant, just for an instant before it pulled out of his detection range again.

A grey object streaked towards them.

BOOM!

“Milord, we took a cannonball to the rear engine!” a host shouted as he emerged from the inside of the barge.

“So we did.” Vincent said as the snake loomed larger in the distance.

For some reason, his body was smiling.

Across the distance, Will frowned.

I was hoping the ghosts wouldn’t get caught so easily. Oh well. It’s good information to have.Author's note: I realized i was overdue to actually put together a kit that Will had built over the years he was on the 10th floor. Here it is. It's relatively simple without any super complex effects because it's mostly meant to make the items in Phantom Hand outrageously good....and because i didn't have the brainpower to make something outrageoulsy original 9 times in a row. This will require me to make minor adjustments to previous chapters, but nothing outrageous. you can get by just fine without backtracking.Tomahawk of the Dimensional Hunter

Steven

Any restrictions on spamming Immortal Serpents?

Dan N

"Effect increases against enemies larger than the wearer." But I heard William Oh was 15 feet tall and as wide as a warehouse!

Akkido

Probably just the time it takes for the idol to repair itself fully.

Macronomicon

yeah, if he was wearing the sourdough ring, he totally could do that.

Stanisław Drewienkowski

The question is: does the idol spawn AN Immortal Seprent or THE Immortal Serpent, if it is always the same one than it can be resummoned time and time again as long as Miasma in the area permits. If it is one Snake that gets resummoned than it being alive is the cap. Maybe if it dies it goes on internal cooldown too?

Stanisław Drewienkowski

And Steve is the size of a continent, even with his large stature William Oh still would get a hefty bonus

Exrotes

One of Will's fingers should probably be a dedicated Sourdough synergy relic for consumables, something that improves repair speed and maybe a multiplier on number of creatures summoned by idols.

Ethan B.

TFTC!! That's some damn nice gear for sure

FunkyFlame

Id love a recap of the sourdough ability that lets him combine relics, since it feels like the stats he's getting from the gear he has should be way higher? If he built hammer of god in like a month whilst on the run surely his kit after years of being a lord would be outrageous? I get that the phantom hand is amplifying it's stats but still. Maybe my perception of how many stat points and item can give is just skewed from seeing all his crazy items idk. TFTC!

matt

Cloak of the Honey Badger is hilarious.

Nùmenor

If he slotted the Cloak of the Honey Badger in phantom hand, would he have 100% damage mitigation, and would that make him impervious to damage?

Patron1kj6tz

How is he making 11 butlers instead of 5? Also how are they 20 times stronger instead of slightly over 5 time stronger? Did he upgrade the wand during the time skip, am I misremembering how phantom hand interacts with the wand, or am I missing/misunderstanding some relic effects?

David Weller

Well there's two ways to read that. 100% damage mitigation could mean impervious to damage. But it could also mean, " take half damage." And 200% damage mitigation could mean, "take a third of damage."

Ed Je

William Oh creates new relics just by thinking about them. As soon as he comes up with a new one, he remembers that he had already had it in his pocket the entire time.

Quazzy

Phantom hand buffs items, and scales on Acuity. His Acuity is a lot higher now, and he has a *lot* of relics that buff phantom hand

Tsorov

I think his Hands bonus grows with resistance. The higher his resistance, the better the relics in his hand become.

Gorane

Does will have any other consumable relics besides health potions and this idol of ouroboros. At the very least, it would make sense he had some other powerful potions besides health ie resistance or rage ones

Jonathan Williams

The real issue is..... He can basically spam consumables..... Why doesn't he have like 100 snake like summanable consumables.... It would take him all of a days worth of effort to have bought all available on the market and he should be actively scanning all the floors for it every day

Jonathan Williams

He should have like 100 or more actively spammable summon consumables..... Not hard for him to have bought and have on him.

HUAAAANG

The language around the mention of Ring of Explosive Doughmaking kind of implies he currently has it slotted. You might want to insert an "if" or "would" with the Wand being currently slotted.

Gorane

"whose Stronghold is on the 14th." Wasnt it said that Carrie doesnt yet have a stronghold ie she is a lord only by self proclamation

Gorane

Overall when Will got to the 11th floor, all the lords (and guests) from loeer floors were there. Did they just get past the 10th floor without going to Wills stronghold? So does that mean Will keeps the 10th floor keysites free and not under surveillance?

Patron1kj6tz

I know that, he should have a little over a 5x multiplier right now not an 11x multiplier. And even if he did have an 11x multiplier the butlers would only be 11x stronger not 20x stronger. That's what I'm confused about.

Macronomicon

everything that boosts phantom hand boosts the number of summons. His phantom hand boost is like...3.2x. and his Acuity is...371, for 11.8 (round down) summons. Their 20x power is a rough guess of mine.

Gorane

Could Will get the undead retainers to be invisible for wormDuncan if he used the ghostwalk ability?

Gorane

Also I am a bit confused about archetypes. Will was originally scout/infiltrator, then scout/rogue and now called rogue/ranger. What even is his archetype then?

Nate Hada

I think this is justifiable in setting for both efficiency and efficacy. It seems like power is predominantly tied to abilities and their primary and secondary effects. None of Will’s abilities directly affect summons (besides his affinity for snakes?) so it would be middling at best. I am not expecting anything remarkable from his snake summon, even setting aside his direction not to kill anyone. For the vast majority of problems, a direct application of force would be much more effective. In this case, the summons will only cause some slight distraction for the climbers while loth does something to the worm. (Likely separating him so he is forced to summon some fae that will get significantly injured before escaping up a floor) It is true that Will could use a summoning strategy with the right set. But just because he could have done it doesn’t mean it would be worth his time to build an entire set and buy consumables for a lackluster build. (More fun to play with miasma anyway)

Patron1kj6tz

I distinctly remember Phantom hand being 1% boost per point of acuity. *Does some math* Okay If he has 371 acuity, a (25+65 rouge, 65 dimensional, 65 eidolon) 220% bonus to that, it's multiplicative (3.71*2.2 not 3.71+2.2) then 3.71*2.2=8.162, which since this is on top of the base effect would end with (1+8.162=9.162) slightly over a 9x multiplier. Even if my math is completely wrong there's still the issue of them being 20x stronger when they only have a 11.8 multiplier on them. I'm either completely missing something or you're breaking the established in universe rules by having the butlers strength scale faster than their numbers.

CloudyBall

"....and because i didn't have the brainpower to make something outrageoulsy original 9 times in a row" If u get to 12 we can call u the Heracles of Patreon

CloudyBall

Additionally, it consumes a charge for a summon that might get AoE'd by the enemy Lord somehow by abusing some interaction... probably a bit risky to put all the eggs in one basket. He could also make it seem he can only summon 1 at a time and then spam them at a crucial moment, maybe?

Macronomicon

scout's under the umbrella of the ranger archetype, and infiltrator is under the rogue umbrella. they're like subtypes.

Mrfacemanlol

“For some reason his body was smiling” Void still alive in there?

Patron1kj6tz

In it's current state SD basically takes 20 relics, removes half their potency, and then adds all that to a 21st relic that loses 1/3rd of its potency. Most of his kit is giving slightly over 70 stats which would translate to each base relic having an average of 7 stats, on top of what ever other effects it has. I remember from the beginning of the story (and Caddocks musings about the relic effects Will was showing) that as potency increases linearly rarity/cost increases exponentially. I'm not sure where slightly more than 7 stat point with no other effect or slightly less with some effect falls on, but here are 10th floor relics we know of Pants of Darting +8 Kinesthetics +3 Acuity +15% Movement speed Once per battle, user may drastically boost their movement speed for a short time. Scales with Kinesthetics. Ring of Echoing Thunder. +8 Strength +3 Resistance +2 Focus Shockwaves created by the wearer are 30% more powerful. Shockwaves created by the wearer will echo, re-dealing half damage to any enemy hit by them. Dunewalkers +5 Strength +8 resistance +3 Kinesthetics Terrain Manipulation Abilities are 20% more potent. Sand and other unsteady terrain provide more support and take less energy to traverse. Scales with Resistance. Sand and other chafing irritants will be passively removed from the Wearer. I would think that he'd use as much 10th floor stuff as he could but it looks like he's been mostly buying stuff from akul to make his new kit. I would really expect for him to cram a dozen dune walkers into his build, it's basically perfect for him.

Macronomicon

why i got 11.8 with a 2.2X3.71, is because of the nature of the bonuses. you have to add 1 to the 2.2 bonus or else you're losing the first 100% bonus. Example: if you had a 100% total bonus, and multiplied your base number (3.71) by 1.00, it would do nothing, when you know it should be 7.42. instead, add 1 and multiply by 2.00 As for the 20x, either the eidolon bonus from the mask is double-dipping, OR, the 193% bonus from the wand is affecting itself. if neither works, then they're just 11x. I'll ask the discord if they think either should work.

Macronomicon

This is also a writing issue outside of world. If i wrote that he just whips out things that haven't eben properly setup, it's less satisfying, even if it would work. Even giving him that gear he's ostensibly had this entire time is a bit out of left field.

Macronomicon

I'll have to have a shopping episode where he can grab some new consumeables.

Macronomicon

I would have to do diminishing returns like David Weller suggested, because getting perfect damage mitigation that easily would be a problem.

FunkyFlame

Huh interesting, I guess he's leaned more into powering up the phantom hand instead of his base terrain manipulation abilities, which I can understand as the multiplied stat boosts can get pretty insane.

Joseph Snyder

You should probably go back in and make them all copesetic when it comes from the system for publishing. Like if someone says scout that's fine but the system should probably only ever refer to him as a scout ranger type.

Patron1kj6tz

Well now I feel silly about that math error. *Checks math again* Huh, a 371% boost getting a 220% boost is 3.71*3.2=11.872=+1187.2%. But just like how having 100 acuity doubles a relics effectiveness instead of doing nothing don't you need to add another 1 bringing the multiplier up to 12.872? Or am I making another math error? Also if each butler is getting a +193% boost to their potency then shouldn't they be triple their base not double their base strength? Unless they're only getting the 65% eidolon boost from mask of the phantom, which would be 11.872*1.65=19.589 (or 12.872*1.65=21.24) in which case it checks out.

Shyt

Like that character from jjk

Tyson Dougall

Wait if he has a 25% damage mitigation if he put that in phantom hand wouldn’t he be like overflow damage reduction? What would that even do
