What's our maladjusted antagonist up to and how can we make him pursue his goal of supplanting Solaris while running up against Perry?Perry in the immediate future is going to deal with a little bit of shenanigans around his scrapyard, then get shipped off to Washington city for his Draft (specifically, he will be guarding the train that will be transporting a ton of food and supplies back from Washington city in exchange for the draftee's help defending it.)I don't have any strong ideas on what Chemestro can be doing in the meantime and how it can come into play. I don't want this guy to be forgotten, because he's been a fun antagonist so far.

Make Chem the sweeper assigned to the train detail. It is something that he has done in the past and a way to build his rep. 🤷🏻

PatronTurtle

Chem has finally found an amazing home. It has a garden that he finds he likes handling without powers when he is thinking. It'll play in as Perry accidently finds out and doesn't bring it up, but adjusts his view of Chem more

Inspired / frustrated by his defeat by the greater corruption demon, Chem bribes / forces a mage to summon the same demon again so that Chem can convince it to loan him power and minions to defeat Paradox with. The demon’s vendetta against Paradox causes him to agree.

Chemestro decides to play the long game. Orchestrating a fix for Perry to bust him out if he earns Perry’s goodwill and attempts to break him from the inside. Perry soon catches on and tries to make Chemistrio like him too much to inconvenience him further. Great antagonists make the best frenemies!!

Enaz the great

Studying social manipulation skills so he cause causes as much PR and emotional damage to Perry as possible

The Human

They're registered nemesi, seems unlikely they'd be paired

Chemestro builds his lair, and a factory in order to directly compete with the goods that Perry is outputting. Ex: chemically perpetual batteries that compete with perrys solar perpetual batteries. Or sabotages Perry's goods so that they fail and Perry loses reputation in the tinker market.

Jared Bowers

Logistical mix up and they didn't consult all the records it makes it funny.

Draeysine

Things on Chem's to do list: 1. Get Lair, 2. ????? 3. Profit 4. Pay more to Win more at Magic 5. Visit Therapist, 6. a fun, productive, and relaxing hobby. give this guy a veggie garden or something.

Crownfall

Do you have any opportunities to foil what he is doing against Perry's guard duty on the train or foil the last arc against chemestro like how perry struggled to claim and upgrade and defend his lair and income chrmesyros turn

Michael Vonica

I feel like he should be focusing on accumulating money, leverage, contacts, and partners, probably through sneaking around and using his powers and chemical skills. Solidifying himself as separate from his father, while building a foundation he can use to support himself in the future. His goal isn't just to beat Perry, but to replace Solaris. And Solaris isn't just strong because of his power, he has ways of making the world work for him when he needs it.

Michael Vonica

Also, while his conflict with Perry is great, my favorite part is that he feels like he is more than just that guy who hates Perry. Chemestro has his own stuff going on, too.

djineater

I feel like it would be funny to see chemistro get hit on. Like he follows perry to a cafe or something and in an effort to get info from a waiter, accidentally ends up flirting with her and she flirts back. Culminating in a ‘follow up appointment’

Maybe Chem's just traveling on the train for some other reason - like maybe the therapist explained what a "vacation" is to him and he decided to try it.

Derek Engols

Sweeper overtime, could easily throw him onto the train you mentioned as either Perry's appointed boss, the trains assigned sweeper, or something. This gives you some interesting paths of reality to go down and some multiversal jank. Given Perry's armor is trying to resist him, the discovery of that alone would be a bit alarming. Give perry some quest with branching possibilities, you mentioned level 5 perks. Well, as this system is trying to prioritize Perry's safety literally over everything and he's stuck in between cities in high tide, why not show a bit of that aspect? How does it help him? Would it's ability to prune reality also help him in a more direct way? Would it give him quests with ominous suggestions as the the results? Would it forewarn him to a possibility of derailment? Is that Too strong?

Derek Engols

Hah I thought the same, then expanded comments. Could be a good catalyst for character development, or it could lead to chems downward spiral of bad decisions? Like, imagine him trying to play crowd control, or end up hurt and being taken care of by someone on the train? Big hit to that pride he's been nursing,

Derek Engols

Does he still think that's Perry is using a separate tinker while he's a mage?

LordDark

Best thing in my opinion would be to see hi life falling apart. Grandma decided to rescind her offer. He got robbed 3 times. His nwe LAIRS got exposed twice and his therapist is kidnapped and held hostage by mole people who have an incessant need to be told tunnel collapses are not their fault

Chemestro starts altering his brain chemistry to improve himself to increase efficiency

JoBo12

It would be interesting to see Chemstro attempt to build his own team. After all while he is powerful he is still only one person needs people to back him up in situations. It would also serve to showcase his struggles in dealing with people, leading to him further acclimating to normal society. This team as an eventual found family could also lead to his growing realization that his father is a massive dick. Seeing as Chemstro is no Tinker himself it might be logically for him to recruit either a Tinker or a Technomancer first. On the other hand, I also like the idea of having him discover a normal hobby in his civilian identity. Could even make a civilian friend (who could be used in the future to get Chemstro invested in some other plot).

PuppyCrusher

I would love to see him developing his lair/production/logistics while also developing his emotional range. Example: he sees Perry hiring people for his scrap yard. He doesn’t understand, as the robots would work longer, be cheaper, and less issues. He doesn’t know about the deal with Locus, and his stunted emotional range maybe keeps him from grasping the sublet nature of the benefits of being part of the local community. But he reasons his way to some logic on why he would hire people, so he hires people too. For admin stuff, loading docks, stuff like that. Maybe he make a store where he can sell his less illegal stuff to the public and a low rate. Like insulin, or chemo medicine. He stars interacting with people more. Docks guys joke around with him, his older receptionist always trying to set him up with girls from her church, and giving him advice (you need a real name, you need to dress better, you need to put in more face time with people who work for you, etc). Maybe the lady who does his payroll lady is single mom (windowed by a hero during a fight with a cowl?) with a couple of kids. He starts spending a lot of time with them to learn why they are better than AI or just automating it. Que relationship montage: after a night is drinking with the guys, he helps one of them doge wife aggro by sobering him up with his powers right before dropping him off. He cures the payroll lady’s kid of some long term illness with his powers. Company meeting to help him pick out a real name. They are all living squalor? Not effective to bottoms line; build dorms that are closer for them for their family’s. And put in a ramp for Sarah’s grand mother’s wheel chairs, and Justin’s daughter loves slides, so an absurd play ground for them. Realize he can heal a crap ton or illnesses with his powers, and goes on healing rampages. Doesn’t understand why he feels completed to spend time with these people and help them. Bring back therapist. He like helping people. By the time Perry gets back, Chemoestro is THE most popular hero in the city. Everyone loves him. Chemestro Day! No civilians in the city will tolerate any shit talking about him; only hero EVER to help people like he does, AND he is a sweeper in the wall. People turn against petty fast when him and Perry fight. But Chemstro started the fight!! Doesn’t matter, how dare he fight with this hero who has done so much for him. Perry makes a public apology? Perry gets into “helping people” r computation with Chemestro Maybe Chemostero realizes this is how he wants to rule, with love and care. Why need to be a villain when being a “hero” is so much more efficient and effective? Rivalry ends by then becoming Frenemies; comparative rivals, not antagonistic.

Perry has been riding the edge of PR disaster recently. It's currently Paradox's biggest threat to his career.

Thomas

Chemestro needs to have a conversation with his therapist about sex and what it is. It could happen after he ends up in a situation where he somehow manages to get a date, could be with a guy, while looking for someplace where he can stay that is better than his shit apartment. Also he discusses magic with Dave more because of the demon and Chemestro wanting to add magic to his repertoire, just not magic from Perry's grandma.

SunderGoldmane

If you want an apocalyptic mimic then chemestro can learn how to apply his permeability to spirits and slip them out of souls. But that may not actually lead to apocalypse, we’ve already seen what happens when a spirit gets dumped on the ground, nothing happens. On a different angle. Chemestro could be reading from grandmas library and learning the things that Perry has started learning. But shenanigans and a draft get in the way of him being first to implement his paradox version of it. Instead, chemestro learns how to leverage his abilities into magical chemical engineering. A natural born alchemist that’s creating Breaking Bad level of pure spells. This has the added narrative bonus of chemestros approach to magic being nearly and inverse of Perry’s, Perry require impurities for spendthrift, chemestro can remove them in their entirety. Narrative bonus two: this sets chemestro up as competition for anti magitech consultant, and removes the monopoly Perry had on that market so far. Imagine Perry coming back from draft and Chemestro is now the hired anti magic security consultant for nexus, now Perry has to prove he’s not and that means doing some stupid stupid magic shenanigans.

SunderGoldmane

Dave could suggest that chemestro try refining his trashy and impure reagents with his ability. Turning a lb of trash aeronite or death-what’s-it into a half pound of unnaturally pure shit would start him on more alchemical interests in magic and it would upset Perry’s supply chain as he needs impure stuff for spendthrift. Wouldn’t even be don’t on purpose really.

SunderGoldmane

BoM has been put on screen already, has been established as a down to earth veteran in both combat and the “art of the game”. It would be cool to see someone with that archetype make there way into chemestros life as a kind of chief henchman/consultant.

SunderGoldmane

Self alteration of the system that determines what’s a good idea or a bad idea is a bad idea. Once you make a mistake is it’s exponentially difficult to correct that mistake. But if max wants to introduce another tick or handicap that is similar to tide effects then this could be a way to introduce it.

SunderGoldmane

Becoming an alchemist with his powers and selling himself as a better anti magitech consultant while also engaging in PR battle.

SunderGoldmane

This could serve as a teacher/mentor to magic as well for chemestro. The demon already asked if he was this realms version of a sorcerer. To the demon it wouldn’t matter if he was super powered or had a symbiotic spirit to use magic. The demon should recognize how useful his ability to distill chemicals truly is and point him in the direction of being a masterclass alchemist.

Thaco4

Boo, doesn't make for a compelling story.

SunderGoldmane

Chemestros taking a joy ride while reading about magic and alchemy. Studying up to be the new number one consultant for anti magic security to the nexues while Perry is doing work.

Brell

Chemestro rationally understands that he needs a network of inferiors because he cannot be awake and alert at all times, and allowing Perry to take the initiative in their rivalry would be tactically unsound. While trying to recruit minions, Chemestro accidentally gives his candidate the impression that they're on a date, and things quickly fly off the rails. When the dust settles, he shows up at Perry's motel, looking to blow off some steam by battling his nemesis, but instead finds himself consoled by Brendan and Sophie.

Maybe some fun vigilante bs? Or a romance arc? Ooh you could give him a trope filled adventure in the slums!

I don’t really see chemistry as an antagonist

Dave Quitit

I want the array of C running face first into his issues. His learned leadership style is "obey and succeed or get tazed". His only learned intimacy only occurs while he gym rats. I'm waiting for him to get hit with an electric attack and scream "oh yes daddy" like Caillou, and/or attempt physical relations and discover he can only "raise the flag" if all involved parties are on Stairmasters.

ImBaroqe

Hmm, for some reason I don’t want to read Chemestro’s story- but would be fine if he’s a side note in Perry’s.

RepossessedSoul

I think the best way to handle Chemestro would be similar to how avatar handled Zuko. Have him start as an antagonist but evolve into someone that Perry has to work with as Perry steps up to try and save the world from whatever is causing the High Tides. While also have Chem realize that his 'dad' is a real POS that treated him and his siblings terribly. Chem could be a very good chance to show how incredibly difficult it is for someone to escape from their conditioning. As someone that realized how rascism and xenophobia is used to keep people from hating those in power. That could be an interesting way to show conflict and growth with him. Chemestro's weakness isn't his power or physical prowess but his mental state and emotional lack of development. So his arc has to focus on him coming to terms with what happened to him, or choosing to ignore it and double down.

Serpentssnare

I second this. Also, if his permeability doesn't work with spirits due to world mechanics, maybe Chemestro could apply it to concepts (subjective reality)? The tech abilities seem to function with objective reality, the magic abilities seem to function with subjective reality, and the tinker twitch seems to draw from subjective reality to power objective reality, so Chemestro might be able to stop tinker twitch's flow state by changing the connections between ideas? It would require him to become more of 'generalist', giving him a driving need to interact with new concepts to understand them with his ruthless need to find how they connect to each other.

six

Have Chemistro grand plan be to murder Perry, but pin it on Solaris. Which will then set Perry's parents on Solaris, leaving him the strongest sweeper in the city.

Froyo Baggins

I honestly think the magic juice angle is boring. I'd rather have him reject it, maybe get some magic angle that amps up his central gimmick, or works well with his personality.
