1: I knew a guy who had Tourretes (or claimed to) and the way i remember him describing it was that he could excercise a bit of control over what he did and when, but had to have some kind of outburst.I'm also aware that he also had ADHD and speaking out of turn or blurting things might be more a symptom that, in which case, i would have to modify the Natalie's self-diagnosis.I don't want to misrepresent a group or a condition that I know nothing about, so correct me if I'm wrong.2: I vaguely remember reading a scientific article about light having some kind of bleed-through between energy and mass, where it would do...something spontaneously, at a quantum level. Is there some effect like that where you could measure the amount of light in a box by measuring this spontaneous effect of photons on spacetime, and if so where can I get a better formula than E=MC? It's obviously not the right one.

For tourruttes watch sweet Anita's interview by Anthony Padilla for a loose frame of reference or just watch a bunch of her clips she's a twitch streamer with it

2 : so yeah basically a photon have and doesn't have mass. I believe it got something to do with e=mc2 , you know going at the speed of light mass gets funky with energy. Hence why a photon is weird. V sauce the youtuber made a video about that. I'm a bit rusty to be honest.

Littleme02

2 ~~I think you are thinking of quantum tunneling~~ No wait, i think i can find it Are you thinking of Pair production?

Carrioncrawl

From my understanding of the first it varies from case to case quite extremely. There are some that can control it to some extent and kind of guide their tics, some that can try to block particular tics (extremely vulgar/embarrassing/offensive tics usually), and some that find it incredibly debilitating and have very little control of their tics. It’s worth knowing if you weren’t aware that a lot of people with Tourette’s have physical tics as well and usually they have some recurring tics as well as spontaneous one. I’ve seen that range from spasms, a full set of Naruto hand signs, to biting themselves so hard they draw blood. I think as long as you treat it as a serious medical condition rather than just trying to make it a joke you’ll probably be fine.

Jeremiah

1. Tourettes and ADHD both exist on a spectrum of severity. A good comparison for Tourettes is OCD; some people have far more pronounced behaviors/urges than others and they can express in different ways. On the one hand, you have the common trope of profanity as a tic, other people experience various physical and verbal tics. 2. Here's a QA article that should answer some of your questions; http://scienceline.ucsb.edu/getkey.php?key=2976

Beeees!

Photons have no mass, but do have momentum. So they can impart a force, albeit a very light one. The equation for the momentum of a photon is p=h/lambda where p is momentum h is planks constant and lambda is the wavelength of the light

Macronomicon

I find it hard not to make a joke about the naruto hand-signs.

LordDark

Knew a guy who would twitch and make a noise that sounded like a like what a beaver pretending to do a bird call might. He did this atleast four times every five minutes.

Beeees!

And for tourettes, I've heard tourettes tictok has a wide range of anecdotel experiences of people who have it in easily digestible videos

Jeremiah

Also, an addition to the second question; there are some interesting conjectures and mathematics around bending light. Look up articles on the Airy Function.

Carrioncrawl

The guy also makes jokes about it, it’s ok to make fun of a tic in a “that’s funny way” as long as it doesn’t spill over into making fun of doing that tic. Like if someone’s talking and has a brain fart with what they’re saying and say something really funny. Laugh at the thing that’s funny but don’t bully the person, if that makes sense? The Naruto hand sign guy definitely thinks it funny but at the same time it can make performing delicate things with his hands like cooking, cleaning, typing, etc incredibly difficult when it gets triggered and he has to drop everything and do it. It’s funny but it’s also a debilitating disability at the same time which is a difficult road to walk sometimes and you’re likely to have some people annoyed and offended no matter how hard you try with it. Not that that’s a reason not to, just something to keep in mind

Jeff Casey

As for the second point, there’s a couple of studies done where crashing photons together turns them into electron/positron pairs, matter and antimatter, but that’s only when the photons are being carried along by the magnetic field of a stream of ions going 99.995% c, so you’d need a particle accelerator for that

Jeff Casey

Admittedly though if spendthrift works with speeds too it should allow that to work at 1/9th c, which is admittedly still like 30k m/s, but that’s probably a lot more manageable, and pocket particle accelerators totally seems like something a Tinker has already made

rwn

Hmm I think that would all even out into noise if the photons in the storage device were just bouncing at random, but if Perry managed to get them all synchronized into a single pulse he could maybe measure the vibration of the device (at that scale it would basically be temperature I think)? But if the device is vibrating / radiating heat like that then the photons are slowly losing energy and going to lower and lower wavelengths...

Why do you have to defend yourself? You have a character with a brain that was modified by extra dimensional energy to give her obsessive fugue states of creativity in a very specific direction. You then opened this brain up to a ultimate 4th or more dimensional eldritch being that defys comprehension. Pretty sure anything that comes from such a interaction is 100% explainable and lore accepted in the story. We have 0 similar occurrences in our world. You never said in the story she has tourrets. We just see similar actions to what we know of as that. She also has lowered ability to control her immediate action as we see when she sits in MCs lap. That's not a symptom of tourrets. So saying she has a whole diffrent thing your getting ideas from this and that is fine. Shouldn't have to defend yourself. This is your world. We just visit it.

Macronomicon

Not exactly defending myself, although there is some of that there. I want to be as accurate as possible in this instance which, which will both do good for the character, AND ward off possible issues in the future.

Ben

Physicist here! Great story, binged the entire thing in the past two days. Here's different levels of explanation for question two (if you've ever not had a long winded physics teacher please surprise me) tldr ("good enough" physics) - perry just needs two clocks. Shove enough light in a box and the light's energy will make a gravitational field that will make time near the box move slower. Compare time elapsed between the watch close to the box and any other clock. As he uses up the light, the two clocks will start running at the same pace. with equations - light has energy proportional to its frequency (which for disintegration beams is probably much much higher than gamma rays) so is super high (E=hf). That energy will generate a time dilation of T(on box watch)/T(other clock) = sqrt(1-[2*G*n*h*f] / [r * c^4 ] ). where n is the number of photons, r is just half the size of the box (as in all physics I assumed the box was a sphere), G is the gravitational constant, h is planck's constant, and f is the frequency. So regardless of frequency or box size, enough photons will do what you want. Happy to give more details or whatever here, but this seems like enough for the story? honest answer - we have some theories but no provable idea of the answer. The question "shove enough light in a box" runs into a lot of physical problems (perfect reflectors aren't really a thing so the box will absorb light, get really hot, and melt). If you solve that you run into quantum gravity problems, as that much energy in a small space breaks current physics.

For the tourette's, I got a good buddy of mine can't help himself but he makes sounds depending on what he's doing. If he's playing a video game for flight he'll make swooshing sounds like he's flying. Or if it's a shooter he might make pew sounds. He can't help it and he doesn't notice it until someone points it out. But I have never heard of someone being able to pick and choose their tic for the disorder. And anyone who really tells you that is completely full of it. One of the above commenters saying tourette's is like OCD is a lot closer to the truth. It's a good idea to ask for a fact check you could really piss people off by misrepresenting the disorder. And a few people do it for views fake it that is.

Colin

The way tourette syndrome works is essentially neurons are firing when there not supposed to. There essentially going off and doing there own thing without the rest of the brains input. As for suppressing tics no your not really suppressing them or stopping them its more that your brain is immediately countering those signals with contradictory signals, for example with motor tics I have to consciously make my arm do something else, this generally means I actively clench the muscles in that arm to stop the original bogus signal from fully executing. If your watching you will likely still notice a twich. As you might imagine actively countering tics like this is extremely mentally and physically exhausting.

Bob

1) It's a broad topic. You normally don't have a lot of control over it. Sometimes a response triggers an unexpected and not-normal different response. Jazz hands in front of the face or on top of the head is real common when excited, also pushing people away and spontanious pacing, I've seen clapping too. People with tourrettes will also copy the tics of other people with tourrettes. The stuff you see on TV is just weird, not fake, but like the 1% that's partially self-inflicted. You can just keep your hands in your pockets or sit on them and try not to get overly excited, or you can let it run wild. You don't always get the choice to not be excited.

Ben

ooooo, fun consequence of this. If you keep shoving more light in the box you can make black hole grenades! More light means more and more energy and eventually physics literally breaks down. Perry can make black hole bombs that he can tailor to specific sizes and yields. Or maybe I should just up my patron tier and make a character. All physicists are really tinkers at heart.

Jeanean

I'm pretty sure tourette syndrome can't be controlled, but it would be pretty cool if it was instead some kind of "tourette minor truth-saying". Natalie just has to blurt out minor truths, but can control slightly how she conveys them. It would have pretty good gag potential, like with Perry's T-shirt.

Gerald Monroe

I was going to mention you can boil vacuum and will get spontaneous pair production if the light is intense enough. But I'm not a physicist and your answer's better.

0xFFF1

The disintegration beams aren't high energy. They're carrying a magical essence that does the disintegrating as a form of reality manipulation completely parallel to mundane physics. You could use low-energy photons and they still could carry the essences that cause the target to disintegrate.

0xFFF1

So yeah, I think it'd be a good idea to give Natalie an eldritch affliction that merely behaves somewhat like Tourettes, enough for her to be mistaken in her self-diagnosis. So long as you never Word of God that it's definitively Tourette's, it should be fine. Although to be safe, plan for Perry's Grandma to diagnose her so we know for certain the affliction is eldritch / magical in nature. I liked the idea of it being a compulsion to tell Truths. Natalie was slightly precognitive with saying the same thing as Perry's shirt, so I think truths she is forced to say are objective Truths, rather than being limited to Natalie's own perspective and knowledge. Could be interesting, because once Natalie knows that she's randomly telling the truth about random things, she'll have to figure out how to spontaneously tell harmless truths rather than splurt out something secret or mission critical. Or even worse, speak an Eldritch Truth that causes the SAN of everyone in earshot to drop precipitously, including herself.

Ovuca

From what I've heard is that sometimes you can suppress the tics but it's really uncomfortable

LucasTheLost

My daughter has tourettes, and her's is almost entirely stress based. She has both verbal and physical tics, sometimes in combination. She will make non-vocal noises (blow a raspberry), say single words("beans"), or small phrases. Physically is almost all stuff with her hands, gestures, dropping what she's holding (usually accompanied with an "oopsie!"), or throwing it down.

SirReality

MD here. Tourette's is defined by the person having multiple tics. Intensity of Tourette's usually correlates with number of tics, not necessarily intensity of tics themselves. Tics are a specific behavior (vocal or motor; complex or simple). They are preceded by "premonitory feelings or sensations" aka you feel something weird before them. You can suppress/delay the tic when you feel this, but usually it continues to heighten the more you suppress it. They are followed by relief from this negative feeling. They are worse during heightened states (including excitement or anxiety, anger or illness). They are often seen with, but are distinct from, ADHD and OCD. If you want more info, Regarding your friend, speaking out of turn was likely ADHD; the random (but self-limited) outbursts of unrelated words would be Tourette's. Please ask any additional questions I can help with.

Carl Mason

Yeah, that is what I am seeing in all these comments. Hardcase has a compulsive neurological disorder that acts a lot like tourettes but isn't tourettes. And she has misunderstood, and in doing so misrepresented, her condition.

Ben

Yes you’re right. I’m editing to make clearer that frequency doesn’t matter if you have enough light

Argwan

a good reference for tourettes is the twitch streamer ´sweet anita´ as for the quantum effect of light, I only know of the grate effect where you have a screen with two slits that filter the light on an optical screen where you find two types of patterns depending on the quantum state of the photon between particle and wave

AI Doomer Pop (e/ak)

I've known multiple people with Tourettes over the years. Two data points might be relevant. One girl I knew in college had an occasional dog-like yipping sound she'd make, mostly when she'd get excited. She was pretty much oblivious to the fact that she'd even do the motions / make the sounds most of the time. Another close friend of mine today holds things together quite well almost all of the time, but starts to have a noticeable neck twitch / starts rapidly jerking his head to the side when he gets tired, and avoids caffeine like the plague lest it exacerbate his symptoms. He can suppress them but it gets harder and harder as he gets more tired. He has quite conscious awareness of the tics.

Re: light having fancy physics effects, other than the fact that it ttravels at the speed of er.. light, might be something like the Casimir effect, which shows you can achieve "negative" energy density (and potentially spacetime curvature). This is a precursor to being able have stable wormholes for instance. It served as a pretty strong plot point in the Arthur C. Clarke and Stephen Baxter novel "Light of Other Days" but is a real physics effect.

A disgruntled nondescript squirrel

i mean aside from it being energy pretending to be matter. there's quantum entanglement at a distance and that light exerts pressure. so if you can trap it in a slowed state you could potentially measure its shift in mass, as light does have mass, just not much. I believe Nasa actually was testing that years ago , but I don't want to look it up right now.

Meise

other topic, but does his spendthrift perc work on the brain chips he grows? and if yes in what ways?

Lentitudo

To be more specific, light doesn't have mass, it has momentum, which can be inparted to atoms the photon collides with, and therefore exerts a force on any objet it hits.

Macronomicon

Ummm… well an easy one would be sturdier and harder to break. I haven’t really decided yet if his perk applies to the organic. That seems like a can of worms

Jon Davis

Hasn’t it already been confirmed that it applies to the organic, since it worked on his very first test with the plant growth at the beginning of the story?

Meise

there it reacted with the ingredients of the ritual? I think

Jon Davis

Also interesting thought: Virtually all of the body’s functions are performed through or as a result of chemical interactions. If he ever modified his body (hell, with how simply his perk applies to stuff like Hardcase’s equipment with just a polish, even *excercise* should probably count as ‘modifying’) his perk should probably work on all those processes in his body. Get more energy from less food, age faster/more efficiently, produce lactic acid in different quantities/effect after working out, have intense interactions between chemicals in the brain that determine emotional state, etc.

Nobody

All I genuinely know is that tics aren't predictable, and holding them back has been described as trying to hold back a cough while choking. There's quite a few videos floating around YouTube of psychologists and tourretes sufferers walking through and pointing out fakers though so that's probably a better starting point. (Persinally I still think it'd be better if it was just an eldrich being trying to use telepathy and temporarily overloading her brain. Can't accidentally offend people if it's a totally fictional thing).

NoodleGod

I have a friend with tourettes and he said he can delay it but only a couple of seconds. Also literally none of his tics are speaking, and he says they rarely are, it's mostly just twitching and coughs for most folks

Ben

So having now discussed this with a few friends we’re trying to figure out how to actually build and test what would happen. So far we’ve learned this thing is a bomb that just randomly explodes. Sudden movements, temperature shifts, falling, earthquakes, solar winds, magnetic fields, oh and cosmic rays that go through everything, all set it off

Darth Bayes

2) E=MC^2 _is_ the right equation. When something is going faster, it has more (kinetic) energy, therefore it has more mass. If the light trapped in the box had the energy of the annihilation of one gram of antimatter and 1g of normal matter (2g*c^2 = 43 kilotons TNT = 3x hiroshima), the light would make the box two grams heavier. Light has zero _rest_ mass, but has nonzero energy and therefore nonzero inertial mass and nonzero gravitational mass--which is why black holes work.

Darth Bayes

If you slow down light, like the box does, it loses energy--but it loses that energy in the form of light. See Cherenkov Radiation. If the perk makes the mirrors better than perfect reflectors--implied by the solar cell exploit--the amount of energy in the box would grow exponentially, though the impact force of the light would probably rupture containment before it got _too_ bad--especially because slow light has more momentum for its energy.

DarkthShadow

I'd watch Sweet Anita's twitch stream just for a bit, and you'll find an example for our best girl tinker.
