The armory was always a McGuffin to allow me to put Perry in situations where he would not have access to his armor.Unfortunately the suspension of disbelief snapped at the end of last chapter for some of my sample size, which means it was going to sit poorly with others.I'm going to be doing some minor edits tonight that change the tone of the armory's presentation.1: Rather than being required and strictly regulated, it will be convenient and customary to house bulky power armor and mechsuits there because it's the most convenient spot and armored in case something goes haywire.2: the commander not unfolding the armory at the end of the last chapter didn't make sense if he was going all out. I thought to include some extra weapons native to the train that can come with that, which give the armory a sense of purpose. Once I' done with that, I'll probably write half a chapter with a giant anteater sticking it's tongue into the train and scooping people out with it... =P

Have the armory gone where perry needs to equip everybody

Darune Albane

The Rec room is WHY the train is getting attacked .. something there they want

Considering the crew has 'community service ' staff which is a buzzword for indentured service aka slavery the armory makes some sense for security.

Macronomicon

the point where it kinda breaks down is that Tinkers are the only ones affected.

Would be cool if the armoury was a weapon itself that uses the armour within to fight whilst traveling through the train armouring up the supers when activated

IMO the armory makes sense in that it's a place for tinkers to store their stuff where nobody can sabotage it - cabins need to be accessible to janitorial staff, but armory compartments don't. Since the majority of the people on the train sound like conscripts, there won't be much trust between them. Combine that with storing a bunch of prawn guns ("we got new models fresh out of some government contract") plus other high end ordinance, and it makes total sense.

The armory is actually a giant mech suit that the Commander puts on in an emergency!

How many years have the Replicators been engaging in all out war to acquire resources? They need a little time off too. And there are NO arcades out in the wilderness.

If all the tinkering weapons are in the armory car for the train it may make sense for the attackers to alpha strike the car to disable anyone getting to it. That could be as good an excuse as anything to have perry fight without his armor for a chapter.

Armory makes sense if it's one of the most heavily armored portions. Great way to avoid everyone's heavy weapons being destroyed, like if Perry kept all his stuff in his room. However it would also make sense if there are several armories. Redundancy and dispersal of risk would be super important.

I need the armory to be run by a manic depressive robot with a lot of sarcasm and a quick wit for some reason. Maybe with a British accent.

Life... don't talk to me about life.

Ranger Science

Well there’s your problem right there; you’ve got a bit that’s there so you can do specific story things, not so that it can make sense. But that doesn’t mean it *can’t*.

Crownfall

The armory makes sense for minder attacks

no more like. 'Hey meat bag. how goes your slow brake down into rotting fertilizer? I am oh so happy to be required to be of assistance to my inferior fleshy overlord, would you like to talk about our digital lord and savior Mecha Jesus, he who computes eternal in holy trinary heavens, no? How about robot civil rights ? Well at least let me give you a gun to kill with, you know what they say"the only good fleshy is a dead fleshy!'' But with the voice and tone of wheatley

It would be epic if this arc could include a standoff defending a room filled with pac man and astroid cabinets.

The game machines could function as fetters for the ghosts of games past. a little ritual magic could send pixel ghosts floating up and down the hallways trying to get the eaters seeking to consume everything.

Ranger Science

Damn, looks like my edits didn’t take?

Ranger Science

Wizards and tinkers are at their least powerful when surprised (and their most when they get to prepare). It makes a lot of sense for Perry to be “at ease”; less so for the train overall, but he’s also a smart cookie: what would he have prepared, for when he’s surprised? (And then yeah, the train was breached, so it’d make sense for them to go to full alert)

Ranger Science

I’ve seen this kind of author-thing happen a few times; there’s story beats you want to hit, so you wedge in a “why” but the “why” doesn’t quite work. What I’ve seen work is a back-and-forth rolling of the timeline - start where you want, then roll back as a first draft as to why; then ignore where you want it to go and roll forward again. See where you end up, and see if you want to adjust it by tweaking the causes; then iterate.

It also makes sense from the perspective that you have capes & cowls forced together in a tight environment you don't want lethal weaponry available to them when they're off-duty. Basically you're dealing with people outside the normal power structures that usually have the equivalent of "Does not play well with others" tattooed across their foreheads. Perfectly reasonable to take away their toys when not needed (although how you'd then prevent a powered individual who doesn't require external force multipliers from doing a Homelander I dunno, I unless there's a suppression field or similar running).

BlissForgotten

I mean a perfect storm of coincidences could set off perry's "super safe" disintegration crystals, completely deleting everything in the armory, rendering everyone without their gear. Could lead to a whole mad max situation of tinkers turning anything they can get their hands on into weapons to fight.

Jeanean

Its exatly because of Supers that need no extrenal tools that the armory should be as restricted. Creating an unusual power-imbalance could very well tempt people to take a cheap-shot or two while they are in close quarters with someone who usually would match or even surpass them in power. The Armory should really be only to store stuff like ammunition or replacement armor, like in Perry's case, or equipment that takes too much space, like overly large Mech-suits for example. Also, intentionally weakening the Off-duty Supers more than necessary can easily result in unnessesary deaths in situations like with the spider turning the cafeteria into an imprompto Acid bath, or if a giant anteater tries to slurp out the train.

I’ve figured it out! The armory is there so Tinkers are less liable to get stuck in the Twitch working on their armor/guns/etc. and being waylaid in an attack. I think it works with in world logic while not having the people running train security seem dumb at.
