Oh, I thought this was a really good first episode for season 2 as well. First of all, the direction of the show, the stylistic choices, and the little details of having a fritz on the screen or the flow of the scenes were all, in my humble opinion, really well done and captured the emotion and tone of the episode, and while it's too early to really tell I think the season as well. Now, as for character-wise? It was so well done and natural how things happened. Seeing Vi fighting alongside Caitlin is bound to be a lot of fun... and bring a lot of angst with it XD I'm not entirely looking forward to that because of it; although, it was fun to see them fight together in the ambush at the memorial. I'm obsessed with the scene of Caitlyn at the fountain, or whatever that was, and talking about her mom, Jinx, and Vi to Jayce and the way the wind was the visual representation of her emotions towards each of these three people. The fact that in Season 1 we started arc one with Zaun's POV and following their struggles, and now we start season 2 with Piltover is pretty cool... even if those things only happen because we're following Vi. Mel is a very interesting character in that I also didn't like her at the beginning of season 1. Her character arc has been very effective. Jayce making the hex tech weapons for Caitlyn, just after she had managed to keep hex tech out of the race, could create an interesting conflict there, not that I think she could have kept them out of it after the attack at the memorial. I don't know, I'm just very hooked with seeing what becomes of her. Oh, the attack at the memorial really reminded me of Declaration of War from Attack on Titan and how the tables turned there, with the only exception that Mel wasn't, quite, about to declare war as Willy was doing XD It's a good reference, though! There is certainly a lot of mystery going around this first episode. We've seen one half of the characters and set up the conflict, but now we have to see what happens with all our pieces. Just as a final note, I really appreciate how gorgeous this show continues looking. It's cool to see all the details they have captured with the visuals of it and the intentionality of it all.

I am already on board with the choices made for the season so far! The flow and pacing were great - I can’t believe the episode was done that quickly! But yes, “natural” is a great word for it! I am really excited for Vi alongside Caitlin, but you know they’re going to give us the angst! So yes, I’m dreading it as well! The ambush scene was TENSE, though! Definitely AOT reminding! And the ART of that fountain scene was so well done! I was in awe of the tranquility and beauty in that scene! The way she had that conversation with Jayce was great, too! And yes, we flip and start with Piltover after Jinx’s attack vs. Zuan was great, too! And the change in perspective from Vi to Jinx. Yes! Mel is super interesting, too - I think she has a lot of potential and I’m curious to see how her and Jayce’s relationship fares through all this. But yes, I want to see what’s going on with all these characters, and we haven’t even checked in with them all yet! And the art? Chef’s kiss so far! Thank you for the kind words and comment! I’m so ready for episode 2!

In the scene in which Caitlyn says she understands what Vi feels, I want to yell, "No, you don't". And I love her, I love Caitvi. But no, I don't think Caitlyn understands Vi's pain at all. Caitlyn, Vi and Jinx are both validated in their pain and anger at the death of their parents. But it's not the same. Cailyn's mom had a big funeral, and the whole city mourned her. Caitlyn, right after that, receives a key to get her all the power she needs to enact revenge. Meanwhile, Vi and Powder have to leave their dead parents's bodies on a bridge. Vander's body was also left outside. In season 1, Jayce accidentally kill a kid, and Vi isn't even affected much by that because that is what she sees all the time. One side has the power to end the conflict (the end of s1), and they only do it when it's too late. And one has to fight dirty as much as possible just to be seen as human beings.

I don’t think that Caitlyn understands Vi’s pain or experience HOWEVER. I think it’s very dangerous to say that Vi and Jinx’s pain is “more validated” than Caitlyn’s. That’s like saying, “My trauma is more important than yours.” That’s not how that works. All three of them lost a parent - Caitlyn witnessed her parents death just like Vi and Jinx - you just can’t compare and say, “Oh, but my mom died in a worse way than yours.” That is missing the point of the entire series. They both have lost a parent at the end of the day. Now, Caitlyn doesn’t necessarily have the right to say that she understands Vi the same WAY, if that’s what you’re meaning - but you can’t say that “Oh, Vi and Jinx suffered more than Caitlyn,” because then you’re just in the same mindset as so many of the characters in this show. You can’t compare “who suffered” more because you’ll be there all day. The point isn’t “Whose death was worse” - people died - and that’s the point. And to your point, Caitlyn had the means to extract revenge, but so did Jinx and she DID. JINX is the cause of Caitlyn’s parents’ death, and THAT implicates Jinx in the cycle - Jinx is very much in the wrong and we can’t “excuse” Jinx because again, violence begets violence and just perpetuates the cycle. Yeah, Caitlyn didn’t react to that child that was killed back in S1 how we would expect her to, but does that justify Jinx killing her mom? Nope. So, I think it’s much more complicated than how you described in the comment and that’s the beauty of Arcane - you can’t just label it in such simple terms. But thank you for the comment! 🙂

I understand the show is not simple and is about the cycle of violence. It's not about validation to pain. Caitlyn's pain is real. What I meant is there is a clear starting point to the cycle here. A whole city of progress is built upon the suffering of people below, and they have no means to fight back but violence. And those above have the means to end it but keep refusing. I think you misunderstood what I said about the child's death. It's not about Caitlyn's reaction (she was not there). It refers to the scene in s1 in which Vi and Jayce work together, and Jayce accidentally kills a kid. Before that, he was adamant about using hextech to buid weapons to fight, but then he became so horrified when the blood is now on his hands. Vi, who is so numb to it because she sees deaths all the time in Zaun, confronts him about it, about how the blood was always on his and, on the whole Piltover city's hand.

Well, so we have been told from the narrative (we all know about unreliable narrators) - we start the story from a specific point, but we don't know the "full" story, just what's been given to us -- but the point I'm making is that at this point, it doesn't matter about the past in where it "started," what matters is what our characters do moving forward. Again, I don't think we can say, "this person suffered more than this person so they're justified." That's just violence begetting violence and continuing the cycle, which is the wrong path, but most of our characters are doing that - it's supposed to be a message to us that "look at what these bakas are doing - we shouldn't want to do what they do," but I'm sure you know that! :D Honestly, it's been two years almost since I watched Season 1, so the child's death isn't something I remember quite as well because I haven't gone back and watched. But I do remember Jayce accidentally killing them and that's what led to the mom revolting in the ambush (again, violence begetting violence and continuing the cycle). And yes, I remember now Vi confronting him about it - I don't think Jayce's reaction is wrong, though - I do think that he is right to not want to create weapons to hurt people because of what he saw. Vi is very much caught up in the cycle as well, and Jayce (while he still does bad decisions after the fact) at least in that moment tries to do something good in not advacing that weaponry. Now, that decision wavers a bit. I guess my main thesis is: We can't say Caitlyn or Jinx/Vi has "suffered more." That gets us nowhere and the cycle continues - the point for me is that the violence both sides are enacting is just going to keep going on endlessly until someone takes a stand and tries to divert it or stop it. Now, is that easy? NO, but like AOT has shown and other series I've watched - it is possible (and we see it in our own world so often) and worth it compared to the alternative. I hope that helps explain my point! :) Thanks for the reply!

I must say, can't remember the last time i felt nervous about a new season. Arcane's first season was so good and we have had to wait 3 years for this one so i was a bit worried if they could continue setting the bar so high, but this first episode felt like it never went away, a good start i would say. After season 1 i was 100% sure Caitlyn's mother would die but i was quite sure Mel would perish too, glad i was wrong because i like her. But perhaps it made it feel like they came away a bit to unscathed, It was after all a hextech weapon fired into their midst. Vi went after Silco alone? eh she went with Jayce and a bunch of enforcers, most of vhom died, i don't like it when red shirts get no recognition. i do get the need and use of a few good red shirts but i think they deserve a little respect for dying to give our cast some sense of danger and heighten the stakes. The whole first season Caitlyn tried to distance herself from her family, i guess witnessing the murder of your mother and the subsequent terrorist attack on her memorial makes one embrace nepotism real quick... not i slight on Cait, i'm sure i would have done the same.

I am glad that the wait has been worth it and the quality is THERE - has it really been THREE YEARS?! That is so wild to me! I wondered if Caitlyn’s mom would die, but I agree - I’m glad Mel is still here because she has some intrigue with her vs. her mom on the council. I would agree with you that they have little scrapes, but you know – a student of mine had their car totaled last week in a car accident and they didn’t suffer but a few scrapes on their arm, so honestly…anything is possible! The world is weird that way. I apologize for forgetting the red shirts! ;) Their sacrifices weren’t in vain! But honestly, I ran out of time on the channel to re-watch the whole season, so my brother is going to have to remind me of some of the minor elements since it’s been a few years. Luckily, this series makes it easy to jump right back into the fray and not feel too lost! That is a good point that Caitlyn wanted to distance from her parents, but yeah, then you lose them and that changes your perspective quite a bit. Thanks for the comment! Glad to see you commenting on here again!

I check in from time to time so if something to my tastes has come up. I did miss the start of Frieren as you had watched quite a few of those, of course when you started that show i hadn't found my way to it yet, so was a bit slow to that one. But i didn't have to "discover" Arcane season 2 so i knew i had to come here for it. Yeah it was aimed at the show, seems it forgot its red shirts and i think i've discussed before how a pet peeve of mine is unappreciated red shirts. The story can treat them as such but the characters should not (unless it makes sense for them).

Right! I was really pleased with Frieren; that was a fun show! That is a fair point about the red shirts, too! I'll have to up my awareness of the red shirts! :D Thanks!
