*EXTROVERT EXPLOSION HEADPHONE WARNING*

This show is HILARIOUS - I haven't laughed this much with an anime for a while, now, and Bocchi's journey to becoming more openly social is so sweet!

I had many theories about how Kita would be as a character, but this blew them out of the water and in the BEST way possible! I'm feeling better and it's just in time for this amazing episode!

Bocchi’s comment about Kita being “not okay” makes more sense in the manga. I’m not sure if it was changed for the anime or if the English translation is just different between mediums but the official manga translation has Kita saying she wants to become Ryo’s daughter instead of Ryo’s girl. There are actually a few translation differences that make the girls a bit more ‘normal’ for lack of a better term, and one I can think of that lessens implications that a character is gay.

No Spoilers! Only music! I absolutely love the music in this show, so I'll be listing the songs we hear (only after we hear them, don't worry!), in case anyone wants to check out the music on their favorite streaming platforms. Now that we've been properly introduced to our new red-haired member, Kita, I can put her as the singer of the OP and ED! Yep, her VA, Ikumi Hasegawa, sings the OP and ED. OP: "Seishun Complex" ( 青春コンプレックス, lit. "Youth Complex" ) - sung by Kita ED: "Distortion!!" - sung by Kita EP2: "8-gatsu o Yubiori Kazoeru Kimi to Machi de Deaeru Kakuritsu ni Tsuite" ( 8月を指折り数える君と町で出逢える確率について, lit. "About the Odds of meeting you in town, counting the days of August") - Sung by Alexandrism. Actually by Fuzzy Logic (an actual JP band, unfortunately no longer together afaik) EP3: "Dakishime Magic" ( 抱きしめMagic, lit "Hug Magic") - by AKORINGO NOTE: I made a quick change. All the little funny 15 second insert songs that Bocchi makes up and sings, I'm moving into this lower section, to keep them separate from the full-length songs above. EP1: "Oshiire yori Ai o Komete" ( 押入れより愛をこめて, lit. "With love from the closet") EP2: "Cocktail no Uta" ( カクテルの唄, lit. "Cocktail Song") EP2: "Kaze Hike no Uta" ( 風邪ひけの唄, lit. "Song for catching a cold") EP3: "Double Kokurekishi Bocchi Hikigatari Version" ( ダブル黒歴史ぼっち弾き語りversion, "Double Dark Past, Bocchi Acoustic Version" ) EP3: "Sono Hi Haitta Shinjin yori Tsukaenai Dame Baito no Elegy" ( その日入った新人より使えないダメバイトのエレジー, "The Elegy of a Part-Time Worker Who Lost Her Identify to the Just-Arrived Newbie")

"No one asking her about the guitar isn't believable" - I'd disagree with this one. As someone who went through their high school life with social anxiety on-par with Bocchi's, I can fully believe that the class has essentially been conditioned (by Bocchi's responses to social interactions) to just not pay attention to Bocchi. They probably DID ask her questions about stuff during her first few days/weeks, but we can probably safely assume she either: 1) totally froze up to be non-responsive or 2) quickly exited the area to avoid social interaction. At some point the other students would just think "well, there's no real point in asking her about since we know she doesn't want to be spoken to.". While that's an incorrect assumption, that's how it would come off as. People would just stop interacting with her because they'd constantly get the same response. It's a vicious circle. Sometimes called the Cycle of Avoidance or the Anxiety Trap: 1. She'd be approached by people, which causes her anxiety and to start to think about the worst-case scenarios (as we see in this episode with the classmates being paper cutouts critizising Hitori) so she flees (either physically or emotionally into herself) to avoid the interaction. 2. Fleeing gives her relief from the anxiety. 3. She begins to associate avoidance with relief, which reinforces "avoidance" as the correct course the next time a similar situation comes around. 4. The next time an event triggers the anxiety, the cycle begins again. She begins to fixate on worst-case scenario, which directs her to the avoidance stage. This repeated behavior will appear to outsiders as her not wanting to associate/talk with anyone around her. So after weeks/months of this, her classmates have already essentially "given up" talking to her because... well, what's the point? In their minds, she doesn't want to interact/talk with people.

I like that the girls sort of make a matrix of personalities Nijika is extroverted & confident, while Bocchi is introverted and awkward which are the two obvious personality types but Ryo being introverted and confident and Kita being extroverted and awkward sort of show there's a bunch of ways personalities can express themselves, and just because somebody seems different than you doesn't mean they don't have things you can bond over. if last week was the 'the gap between the lonely and the loner' this week it was the 'bond between the sub water flea and the social butterfly'.

Right. If every time people reach out to you, you respond as if you don’t want to talk, they will all learn to not talk to you. I did this to myself for a few years after my father died and I deliberately didn’t speak to anyone at school for two years. When I started talking again, I suddenly became very popular and mysterious. I didn’t like it, actually, but that was a stranger problem.

I cannot agree more about hating when shows needlessly drag out miscommunications between characters. It's so annoyingly common, especially in all of the high school romance series. Also, I really like and relate to Ryo as a character. I feel like it's pretty rare to see characters in anime that are very introverted without that being treated like a flaw that needs to be fixed or a symptom of social anxiety. She's just out here happily living her introvert life, and is perfectly capable of interacting with others when the need arises. The only similar central anime character that I can think of off the top of my head is Rin, from Yuru Camp. The two of them look really similar too, now that I think about it.

Mr X

I saw one video explain it as the difference between introversion/extroversion (how one charges their social batteries) and social anxiety/social confidence (The little doubts that creep into the mind vs ... what ever confident people have).

Alex Kornejo

"what ever confident people have" A super power is what that is.

the Kira-aura is too powerful. Her sparkly eyes will melt steel beams and blast a hole through adamantium. Poor Bocchi never stood a chance

romaniablack

The Kita aura is SO powerful! I just love her dynamic alongside Bocchi so far and I can't wait to see where it goes from here! Thank you for the comment!

Ah, that is good to know about that translation part! For the record, I think there is NOTHING wrong with Kita having sexual attraction to a woman, so hopefully that's not what you mean -- I think it can be "normal" to be gay or not heterosexual, so hopefully you just meant that Bocchi wasn't being homophobic, she just didn't think it was typical for Kita to be considering herself like Ryo's "daughter." I'm all for this being an open-minded space for all sorts of interpretations of the context. Thanks for the comment!

romaniablack

These song titles are so fun! I especially love the last one! Thank you for putting out this info and the comment - I appreciate it! :D

romaniablack

But we don't necessarily establish if she said she didn't want to talk, she just seemed shy and didn't reach out to talk originally. It's left up to us to interpret and I offer you all mine. But I'm glad you're sharing your perspective! We all have different ones! :)

romaniablack

It’s totally cool to share your perspective and opinion! As I noted in the discussion, in MY experience in my own home town, people WOULD have reached out and talked to her if she walked around with a guitar like that. I experienced it with multiple people who had similar quirks/hobbies - now, whether they RESPONDED or not would be a different situation. I’m just sharing my experience and opinions, as you are! Neither of us are the “correct” answer, so I’m glad you share your perspective as well. ^^ Thanks for the comment!

I really like that punnett square type of example of extraversion vs. introversion and how all four girls sort of embody different aspects! I’m going to talk about it with episode 4 but it’s pretty cool to see throughout! I mean, it’s basically real life, right? And from having a very diverse friend group in real life that has the same type of matrix, I know what you’re saying all too well! ^^ Thanks for the comment!
