I had to rent this movie to watch it today. My mom has the dvd but I just left her house! She loved this movie and also V for Vendetta surprisingly….well, I’m going back tomorrow and I’m getting all her movies. What did they sound like? https://youtube.com/shorts/4mBqj7eYU2E?si=wYaDreAlbkGidNdi The kitchen scene: https://youtu.be/WbCQxBTcyRk?si=Q2D6N-yT2xUEP-FZ Favorite fossils? Precambrian of course! https://youtu.be/ipkBmbi6k5c?si=4hw5DubPpSA8Dxio Charnia. Then the Cambrian Explosion. https://youtu.be/Y1DPzY6o6hQ?si=1OtAZwke41zE40DD I have been to the Burgess Shale, it was fantastic! https://youtu.be/g8TXkUwjjtQ?si=hkpRERMsmLM65vL9. Favorite pterosaurs? https://youtu.be/npg6cQ9W7cI?si=zhj9K20B_Zbv-ldq Favorite dinosaur? Really, any of them! Favorite cuddles? 😭 https://youtu.be/T2kURaqzCdA?si=x7dEDfrb2du809CF So glad to spend two hours with you and this movie! I love it! I love that Richard Attenborough plays Mr Hammond. He is the brother of David Attenborough. I think it’s fitting that he was cast in this role. Of course Laura Dern is fantastic and a David Lynch actress and the daughter of Bruce Dern and Diane Ladd. Of course Sam Neil and Jeff Goldblum! I had that poster, but I can see it in my mind’s eye! Hahahaha The voice of the DNA was done by Greg Burson. Apparently he had issues and there was alcohol and a hostage situation involved. After that, well, he didn’t have a career. I did read the book and I must say, I wanted to strangle those kids by the end of it. I liked the movie kids a lot better! I read it years ago, so I honestly don’t remember anything else except the kids. I have always been a dinosaur fan as you know from my many comments about them. When I was a child in Chicago, we would go to the Field Museum of Natural History. They had wonderful and outdated murals that depicted the age of dinosaurs that had me mesmerized! https://www.fieldmuseum.org/collection/photo-archives-charles-knight-collection. It always fired my imagination! Speaking of outdated, those Velociraptors have changed since this movie came out. Heck, I think they are much cuter now! I love a fluffy murder turkey! https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/velociraptor-facts.html also, I always chuckle when they are unearthing those bones! If only it was that easy! They have sand over them and they are fully articulated already! Easy peasy! Yeah, it’s for the movie so it gets a pass. Yes, they are right about the avian dinosaurs, they are still around today, they are birds! The fact that the geneticist didn’t know about animals changing their sex is, interesting. There are lizards, fish, amphibians and heck, other animals where making sure the genes from one generation gets to the next is not binary! As Malcom says, life finds a way! My favorite example of this is clown fish! https://youtube.com/shorts/HOcwMEyS-mQ?si=ZrFR1Fz8VZx7Oiuq. Also, the New Mexico Whiptail Lizard! https://youtube.com/shorts/IuwjBbLmlis?si=tlBCEN6ZqECqPCBT all females! It’s rare, but, birds do it too… https://www.allaboutbirds.org/news/parthenogenesis-in-california-condors-stuns-scientists/ So, does “virgin” births happen in mammals? Apparently not without scientific help! So apparently it can happen. Well, I was trying to read up on this and it’s very complicated. We will stop with birds cloning themselves…. I will have to think of a something and try out for a commission slot! This was such fun! Well, as far as manga is concerned, Dinosaurs wise, I’m reading the series Dinosaur Sanctuary. It’s very cute! Highly recommend for a fun, fact filled read that makes you smile. I’ve got 6 volumes so far. Now what have I been obsessed with lately since my mom died….. It’s an old series but a good one! The Terror! I watched it on Netflix, watched documentaries about it, bought books and I’m reading the horror novel by Dan Simmons right now. I’m obsessed I tell you! And it’s real! That’s the HMS Terror and the HMS Eberus, the lost and doomed Franklin expedition that got caught in the arctic. My stepdad is an old merchant marine from England and he is glad I’m interested in this. He tells me a lot of ship related stories….. anyway, here is a trailer for the tv series and it’s fictional ( based on true events) https://youtu.be/rnN7Aad3c7A?si=EH-6_NZJPp4sfVz_ I’m feeling better and I hope that I can get the bulk of what I have to do done in a few more months…. Then things should settle down…… for now. Again, loved the reaction and happy birthday!!! Ok, the next day Sat 10th. This just dropped, he went to “Jurassic Park!” https://youtu.be/0PmumiGoWvQ?si=_C7w5CjxfZykcq1M

This is so weird. Are you doing movies now? Old movies? Movies you have already watched? Hahaha, so bizarre.

Thank you for sharing all that additional content! That terrifying booming tiger-seagull sounding roar will haunt me. 😅 Also, Dinosaur Sanctuary mention! Happy to hear you're enjoying it. 🥰

Loved the reaction and discussion! This was a really fun one to revisit – and any time really enjoy watching a film where someone loves it so much they can’t help quoting it throughout. 😆 And happy belated birthday! 🥰 I think this was definitely one of those films where 90s adults had trouble knowing whether it was appropriate – it’s just dinosaurs, right? 😆 I think I was about 8-9 when I watched it first and another child was about 5 and we were just left to our own devices. This actually made me interested in looking up its rating, the UK classification board (BBFC) rated it as PG (in the UK this is ‘general viewing with potentially unsuitable scenes for younger children’) on original release and then upgraded the rating to 12A (‘generally not suitable for under-12s, not allowed unless accompanied by an adult’) during the re-classification for the 30th anniversary release. The reclassification was primarily due to ‘sustained’ threat. This is a really interesting case study in terms of how decisions were made and classification has moved on: https://www.bbfc.co.uk/education/case-studies/jurassic-park Absolutely agree that this is one of those films that really holds up - in terms of effects, story telling, beautiful cinematography. Also, themes of resistance… definitely here! 😆 Resistance against attempts at human control over nature, corporate exploitation, biological/instinctive resistance and adaptability, etc. Thank you to L Freya for this commission! 🥰 Cannot wait for next week! 💙

"Dinosaurs eat man. Woman inherits the earth" If I think back now, maybe it was Laura Dern and not Nickelodeon or Looney Tunes, who I can credit for instilling the dark humor I love so much. "Welcome to Jurassic Park" 🎶🎵 Dun dun; Dun, dun... 🎶🎵 that overture! Half the battle back then was just getting a score by John Williams or Danny Elfman! Spared no expense! *Drinks shot* Not a bad drinking game! Happy belated birthday!! 🎂 Jurassic Park is timeless, perhaps not literally perfect, but damn close, a true classic and one of my favorites. I was thrilled to show it to my daughter a few years back - but I can't say it was quite as far back as first grade! Damn! That's so wild - I kinda wish my teachers instilled the fear of God in us with movies like Jurassic Park, maybe try a little Jaws before a trip to the aquarium; or bring in a class pet spider followed by Arachnophobia - only to have the spider go "missing" from the cage the following week! Yeah, maybe it's best my creativity isn't used towards teaching! Look at you - not even 30 seconds in the opening and bringing the FIRE! Movie > Book! Hahaha, I love it!! Get that war going! You're so right though, as someone who loved the book, I'll agree it doesn't compare to the movie for me either! I always wonder how it goes when content creators dip in to stuff they don't normally do - I've heard things like it can affect the algorithms negatively, but hey, I follow a number of people regularly on Patreon and a good half of them do very, VERY mixed content and I love it. Anime mixed with reality shows, movies - old ones like Star Wars to LOTR to Marvel to horror to regular cartoon network shows, all kinds of stuff besides just anime! So, I'm very glad you aren't literally anime only! Back to the movie, that opening on Isla Nublar - it sets the stage so well, grabs you right in with the horror of what is in the box, and I'm sure shut the audience right up in theaters. The main duo - Sam Neill and Laura Dern have such great chemistry and charisma on screen, they captivated me right from the start! Grant channeling that Indy look to him a bit doesn't hurt either! And Jeff Goldblum! Yes! Now that you mention it - it is ironic the raptor speech is about male raptors when in the park they're female! Nice catch! The first sight of the dinosaurs after landing in Jurassic Park feels so great, jaws dropping! And they did a really nice job at set design making the park feel so real. They really do set it all up so well at the beginning with everything coming back in to play much later on - was fun to see a lot of it pointed out in the reaction! I never really noticed the whole spotlight fetish before either, but it is there, for sure! So, see if you agree, but I think the most important lesson of Jurassic Park 1 - is not that power and control are the illusion, but rather, power control should never be located directly next to the raptor pen. Right?! 😂 As to why Samuel L. Jackson didn't get a gun, one theory could be perhaps if he had there would not have been any JP sequels haha. I can't completely remember, but I think there's a JP where they're running away on the roof of a building and have to jump into a pool? Maybe not exactly, but I'll never forget my younger self's recurring nightmares - one of which is living that scenario on the roof chased by raptors. Then getting killed by the raptor or jumping off the roof and never making it to the pool, fun times! But hey, any dream with dinosaurs - even if you are being hunted alive, is still a dream with dinosaurs!! 😊 And I'll take nightmares any day over sleep paralysis which is way less fun. I remember one of the differences talked about when the movie came out by the book nerds was the kids ages were flipped - in the books Tim was 11 and Lex was 8, but Steven Spielberg swapped their ages for the movie to have it work with the actors. I always was terrified of the electric fence climbing scene, it was so nerve wracking as a kid, and Tim's ear being all swollen and bloody grossed me out, but it is a weirdly calm break before the final showdowns, and the kitchen hide and seek with the reflection scene gets me every time too, it's so good! The T-Rex being the anti-hero, yes! Good call. I don't remember the other Jurassic Parks as well as the first - was JP2 the one with the bus maybe? JP3 I think had the pterodactyls? JP World movies all have their moments, they deliver some fun times with the advanced CG, but also definitely aren't classics like the original. I think going in with lower expectations you can enjoy them for being action movies, somewhat. Crazy that you were friends with / knew Chris Pratt's stunt double! That sounds wild. Thank you so much for the reaction and discussion! Loved them, and glad you had a fun time with them!

That's so cool, zoos always fascinated me, and I believe some of the coolest people worked at zoos! Thanks for sharing all the interesting trivia and links!

L Freya

Themes of resistance once again, haha, yes! The MPAA / rating system back in the 80s/90s was really crazy, you could get away with way more in a PG movie those days.

romaniablack

Yeah, in the update videos I've done talking about the commissions and the tier itself, it talks about that and lays it out there. :)

romaniablack

You used to work at a zoo?! Cool points increased tremendously! V for Vendetta is a great movie, too! All of the video links are great, so thank you for that! And the cuddles one, haha! Cuddling fossils was not on my BINGO list for Jurassic Park, but here we are! The cast for this entire movie is so great - they really are the perfect blend of actors and actresses to play those roles! That is wild about the history involving the role of a single DNA strand! @.@ That is hilarious that the novel kids are annoying as sin - I’m not *surprised* by that but at least in a book you can gloss over the kid parts - in the movie theater where you couldn’t hit fast forward, I’m thankful the kids were much more tolerable! The Field Museum with Sue!! I’ve been there and love the dinosaur exhibits there! FLUFFY MURDER TURKEYS - I remember in…the third Jurassic Park, maybe? They “updated” the raptor look, I think? And yeah, if only an archeologist’s job was so simple and fun, right? 😛 Yeah, I almost feel it was the hubris of the scientists to think they had all their bases covered and were in control – but yeah, Malcolm was right! It’s crazy how many can change their sex, though! As for the cloning…there’s so much of that happening, it’s wild! But that might be a discussion for another day! Oohh, that is awesome that there’s a Dinosaur manga! Ooohhh, I’ve watched a few videos about the Franklin expedition, actually, and it’s honestly horrifying! Caitlin Daughtery (Ask a Mortician on YouTube) has a great documentary about it. She does lots of videos about various disasters or things related to famous incidents of death, etc. Thank you for the link to the series! I’m also glad you’re doing better! It’s definitely a process, I’m sure, going through and settling things back into a rhythm, etc. Thank you for the birthday wishes and I’m glad you enjoyed the reaction! As for the “Jurassic Park” visit, I’m not too keen on helicopter rides, so I may have to pass on that. Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

Thank you for the comment and kind words! I love this movie and I’m glad you all enjoyed the reaction as well - thank you for the birthday, wishes, too! “It’s just dinosaurs…right?” Famous last words! Although, I watched a lot of movies as a kid that definitely were dark and “toed the line” but kids were maybe built different back then? I sound so old saying that. And yeah, the rating system has always been such a varied, complex thing. Thanks for the link on that! The film holds up SO MUCH! I just love all the themes of resistance as well! Yessssss! It’s so good in how it weaves it all together! L Freya recommended a great one this week!

romaniablack

One of my favorite quotes!! Laura Dern instilling dark humor does seem to be on point! Hahaha, this movie is so much fun! Thank you for the birthday wishes and requesting such a great movie! OH, I just rewatched Jaws for it’s 50th anniversary and forgot how HORRIFYING it is - truly a scary movie that holds up as well! I need to go back and read the book more to fully know for sure if I stand with that claim, still. Honestly, I feel the algorithm on YouTube is against me always, so what could it hurt! Hahaha!! The characters and the actors playing them are so great and the set up of this movie is fantastic! Everything does feel so real in the movie! And yeah, even in Jaws, the spotlight fetish is there! Hahaha!! HAHAHA that note about power, control, and raptors could not be more true. RIP Samuel L. Jackson’s character. T-T I can’t remember the jumping into a pool part, I know there IS a pool scene in Jurassic Park 2, but I don’t think that one involves rooftop running. And sleep paralysis is TERRIFYING, so agree with that one. I feel the child age swap worked really well in this. Not that it was too much of an age difference, in all honesty. That electric fence scene was so scary and still gets me antsy watching it! And then the kitchen scene right after it? Nooooo…. I definitely loved the 2nd Jurassic Park as a kid – but know as an adult it has its flaws - I definitely would watch all the others as fun popcorn movies if I get to them! 😀I’m sure there’s still good commentary to go with them! And yes, I couldn’t believe my classmate got that role! Thank you for the comment and kind words and the commission! This was so much fun to revisit!

I’m with you on the helicopter ride! Heck, I don’t like to fly, especially now! (I’m sure you know what I mean) Yeah, I volunteered at one zoo. I helped take care of a stingray named Bob. I maned his little pool and educated people about him. I also fed him and cleaned a lot of tanks, hauled water and food and it was a very cool job. I got to hang out with the zoo keepers at lunch and I got to see the behind the scenes of what went on at the zoo. All zoos pretty much have these programs. Some are for kids, some are for older folks and they are fun! Here is Bob. https://youtu.be/2A3EBQWPoEg?si=AUbQ2l_D08fYtnzU this was 18 yrs ago so Bob probably isn’t with us. When I left, he had retired to a huge tank under the building I worked at. It was a crazy place. To get there, you had to climb down a ladder that resembled something on an oil rig. It opened up into a huge room that was full of tanks and pumps for the building. The second time I worked at a zoo was in the gift shop. I was an assistant manager so this time they were paying me. I loved that job too because you saw everyone from the public to employees. It was a hard job though because I was basically in charge of the kiosks that were all over the zoo. I would have to walk the length of the zoo like 4 times a day in 100+ temps sometimes. It was a physically demanding job. But, I always loved coming into the zoo in the morning and hearing all the animals talking to each other. That is special. On my lunch breaks, I’d hang out with the naked mole rats. I love those guys. I have recently thought of volunteering again, I may have some time to devote one day to the zoo. We shall see. Yes, I’ve seen Ask a Mortician, Caitlin covers some very interesting history on her channel. So far I’ve read one history book, the book The Terror and I have another history book lined up for the Franklin Expedition. I think what fascinates me is that they are still finding out what happened to these people 170+ If there is a pole for Manga, I’ll throw Dinosaur Sanctuary in the mix. No anime yet, but it’s a fun story with great science to back it up and you fall in love with all the dinosaurs and their keepers! It’s a fave!

romaniablack

Yeah, I can see what you mean! And that’s so cool! I read a book last year called Bright, Beautiful Creatures that you may enjoy if that’s the case - it was a good book! That is so neat, though! Your experience sounds similar to a few others and theirs with an Octopus from the book. Being in charge of a Zoo or Aquarium gift shop sounds fun but also SO MUCH and so busy! And yes, all that walking sounds so taxing! To hear the animals “talking” in the morning, though? That would have been a sight! And definitely special! I wish I lived closer to a zoo; my brother and I are going to try and visit an aquarium on our sibling trip, so we shall see too! Ask a Mortician is such a good series; her Everest video is still one of my favorites but the Franklin Expedition is a top notch one, too. And yes, the fact that it’s STILL a mystery! When there’s still things to discover about something, it just makes it that much more intriguing! And woo hoo! There….maybe a poll for manga and then manga ideas coming up in July, so that’s good to know! 😀
