The first thing that I want to say has to deal with the first song they played where they are not playing well. The actual musicians playing the song somewhat poorly for realism. Also, a friend of mine who is a guitarist talked to me about the accuracy in the animation of the band playing their instruments. He talked about this episode, in particular, where he was able to use the animation and his ear to recreate the guitar parts where they zoom in on Bocchi Secondly, yep, I got misty eyed when Najika and Bocchi are chatting outside when she calls Bocchi her hero (and still do when I see this episode). It is such a heart felt scene where Najika talks about her past and how her sister has sacrificed so much for the younger sister that she loves. You add that to seeing Bocchi's courage to step forward so daringly to save the performance earlier in the episode, it just hits the emotions a bit more. Going through difficulties like this is what either break a band or help them bond together. You can see them bonding even tighter together in this episode.

No Spoilers! Only music! I absolutely love the music in this show, so I'll be listing the songs we hear (only after we hear them, don't worry!), in case anyone wants to check out the music on their favorite streaming platforms. THE RULE OF 8 STRIKES AGAIN Episode 8, titled "Bocchi the Rock". This was the perfect episode to name after the show (and main character). Finally we get to the concert! The first song is the same song they played during their audition (Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet). However, if you listen to it, you'll notice that it actually has a LOT of mistakes in it. The tempo is off, the singing is off, the drums are sometimes too fast or too slow, the guitar and bass are messing up their chords. I'm not too sure if they re-recorded the song and told the musicians to intentionally make mistakes, or if it was done post-recording, but it was a great touch to show rather then tell that the performance is off. The second song, which is our 2nd in-anime Kessoku Band song, named "Ano Bando" ( あのバンド, lit "That Band" ) is probably my favorite song by them. We only get to hear the 1:30 version, but if you liked it I strongly recommend checking out the full version (available on YT or your favorite music streaming platforms). Also, this was the "unnamed song" that Bocchi played during her street performance with the drunk bassist (who we now know as Kikuri Hiroi) in episode 6. (When I said it was an unnamed song in my episode 6 comment, I didn't mean to imply the song had no name, just that we(you) didn't know it so I couldn't list it. But I'm glad you took it that way since if you knew it had a name, you'd have been spoiled that it appears again lol. I guess just not mentioning the song at all then, and waiting until this comment to circle back on it would have been a better call.) Lastly, we get a new ED, "Nani ga Warui", sung by the ever-positive, supportive, and backbone of the band, Nijika Ijichi (VA Suzushiro Sayumi) I guess I can also put Kita's given name in her credits below now, since we now know it lol. Sorry Kita. Kessoku Band (names listed with given name first): OP: "Seishun Complex" ( 青春コンプレックス, lit. "Youth Complex" ) - Kessoku Band, sung by Ikuyo Kita ED1 (ep 1-3): "Distortion!!" - Kessoku Band, sung by Ikuyo Kita ED2 (ep 4-7): "Karakara" ( カラカラ, lit. "Clatter" ) - Kessoku Band, sung by Ryo Yamada ED3 (ep 8-?): "Nani ga Warui" ( なにが悪い, lit. "What is Wrong With" ) - sung by Nijika Ijichi EP5: "Guitar, Loneliness and Blue Planet" ( ギターと孤独と蒼い惑星[ホシ] ) - Kessoku Band, sung by Ikuyo Kita EP8: "That Band" ( あのバンド ) - Kessoku Band, sung by Ikuyo Kita Other Bands: EP2: "8-gatsu o Yubiori Kazoeru Kimi to Machi de Deaeru Kakuritsu ni Tsuite" ( 8月を指折り数える君と町で出逢える確率について, lit. "About the Odds of meeting you in town, counting the days of August") - Sung by Alexandrism. Actually by Fuzzy Logic EP3: "Dakishime Magic" ( 抱きしめMagic, lit "Hug Magic") - by AKORINGO Bocchi's mini-songs: EP1: "Oshiire yori Ai o Komete" ( 押入れより愛をこめて, lit. "With love from the closet") EP2: "Cocktail no Uta" ( カクテルの唄, lit. "Cocktail Song") EP2: "Kaze Hike no Uta" ( 風邪ひけの唄, lit. "Song for catching a cold") EP3: "Double Kokurekishi Bocchi Hikigatari Version" ( ダブル黒歴史ぼっち弾き語りversion, "Double Dark Past, Bocchi Acoustic Version" ) EP3: "Sono Hi Haitta Shinjin yori Tsukaenai Dame Baito no Elegy" ( その日入った新人より使えないダメバイトのエレジー, "The Elegy of a Part-Time Worker Who Lost Her Identify to the Just-Arrived Newbie") EP6: "Guitar wa Tomodachi" ( ギターは友達, lit. "Guitar is my friend" )

Here we go the peak. Amazing performance with those animations, those hard first person perspective shots, and absolutely the top tier music. The brilliant storytelling with the toughness in the performance and then Bocchi makes her biggest step of her life. Such an inspiring moment. When we thought the peak was almost over after the first half. They just cut in Nijika’s backstory and dream before the end of the second part. Bringing the episode to another level that makes me drop tears again. Then the end with the title dropping by Nijika. As usually, when Bocchi has an important bonding of the band’s member, they bring the new outro. With no doubt, the new Sunshine-vibe outro is from Nijika’s Seiyuu, Sayumi Suzushiro. Such an amazing show, an enjoyable and emotional episode, top tier for sure! / Fun fact: Keiichirou Saitou, the main director of this show was also the main director of Frieren! He did the same amazing directing in the episode 8 of both shows, dropping the title with the brilliant storytelling in it. That show’s translation in English only calls it “Frieren”. But in Japanese and Chinese, we all call the series “Soso no Furiren”, it means “Frieren the Slayer”, that’s a drop of title that it’s hard to be noticed because of the translation.

Regarding the bassist's name... remember that the subtitles in this show put given name first, not last (like they normally do in Japan), so her given name is Kikuri, which means Chrysanthemum (a kind of flower) and "reason" or "logic". It also apparently translates to "village", but I doubt her parents had that meaning in mind lol

I've always found it interesting that most reactors don't seem to notice all the mistakes they're making in that first song. I'm a musician who plays live sometimes, and the first time I watched the show I was like "oh god they're choking so bad." I guess it goes to show that all the people who tell me that all the mistakes I agonize over after a performance aren't that big a deal are telling the truth. The performers did an excellent job of representing the sort of mistakes people make when they're nervous and uncomfortable. People are missing notes, messing up chords, playing off-beat, not matching the tempo, all of the common problems. I thought it was great how Bocchi sort of snapped them out of it with her impromptu solo intro. Sometimes you need something like that to get you out of your own head and just play. Also, I love how Ryo appreciates Kikuri's band performances for the whole experience rather than just the music, like you said. My favorite live band is Lightning Bolt, which is very much like that. I enjoy their studio albums too, but the energy in their shows is insane. They like to set up in the middle of the crowd instead of on a stage, so the crowd will be right up on them, to the point where people will sometimes get hit with a drumstick. Their songs are also just sort of general ideas rather than being set in stone, so you could see two shows where they play the same set, but the shows would sound completely different.

That rule of 8, am I right?

That title drop it's almost biblical: Nijika said unto Bocchi: "You shall no longer be called Hitori Gotoh (Lonely Gotoh); but Bocchi the Rock (The Lone Rock) shall be your name, and upon this Rock I will build my Band."

L Freya

Bocchi the Rock, "the rock" now being the foundation of the band - a mind-blowing moment! It's really neat when you can take the title of the show and transform it into a new meaning. Instead of Bocchi being the lonely rock or it being an interestingly dull nickname representing her introversion, now she's become the most important part of the band, keeping it together! Loved that part of the discussion! Really enjoying this re-watch and your reactions!

Another amazing reaction and discussion for sure, RULE OF 8! I appreciate how observant you are of everything in the show, even when you make your comments in the middle of dialogue, you have a skill to still take in what's being said, and I appreciate that 👍 Also, im not sure if anyone has mentioned yet (and I know youre definitely not planning on reading the manga for this show) but the author released a special chapter to coincide with the release of this episode specifically, that expands more on the Ijichi sisters' history. It requires pretty much no context aside from what you've seen from the show so far and works as a perfect standalone chapter to check out if you were so inclined! Anyways, thanks again for the awesome reactions, can't wait to rewatch the rest of the season with you.

RIGHT?! Hahahaha! I love that Nijika gave us the title drop like it was a biblical prophecy! The humor and power of this series truly is something to behold! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

YES! The Rule of 8 does NOT let us down! Thank you for the comment!

romaniablack

That’s really cool about the band intentionally playing “worse” - that shows how not musical I am, because I thought it sounded okay, hahaha!! #dontcutthevocationalprogramsinschool And yessss, I love that conversation between Nijika and Bocchi! So sweet! I love this episode a whole lot - thank you for the comment and kind words!

romaniablack

Thanks for the comment! I thought Hiroi was her given name - so that's better than it's Kikuri!

romaniablack

The music is so good in this and yes! The Rule of 8 strikes again! Thanks for all the information about the songs! That makes more sense about the “unnamed song” being the one we get to see in the episode - yes, I’m glad you didn’t ‘explain’ the title, as that would be a huge spoiler - it’s better with reactions to let the content creator experience it through the show and then AFTERWARDS give them info, like you did with this comment so thank you! That’s how it’s done! 😀 And the ED is sung by Nijika! Ah, that makes the most sense! I thought the voice sounded different than Kita or Ryo! Thank you for the comment and all the information! I love it! 😀

romaniablack

Thank you for the comment and kind words! I loved this episode! We love to see growth for our main character! I am also so glad we got some focus on Nijika finally! I wasn’t expecting all that but it was really well done and helped with her and Bocchi’s bond developing even further! Thank you for the fun facts! That’s really cool! 😀And the Rule of 8 affecting both! Yesss!

romaniablack

Oh yeah, I am NOT musically inclined AT ALL (music was cut from my school when I was in 7th grade) so I have no ear for mistakes. *shrugs* That just goes to show how not being trained to recognize and being immersed in all day can make a huge difference. But yeah, it’s a nice way to realize that you’re often more critical of yourself than you may think! I do love that they recognize it in the show, though, and like I said in the discussion - most shows wouldn’t make that dedication, so I’m glad Bocchi did for sure! And Bocchi snapping them out by being the “rock” of the band was so badass! The growth of our girl! And yesss, Ryo’s love of the feel of music is so great! It’s really cool how some bands are “live” bands and some are “studio” bands like you said! Thank you for the kind words and comment - it’s awesome to get a comment perspective from a musician! Especially with this show!

romaniablack

I love that we get L Freya as our rock! The character development for our girl! Yes, roll credits! 😀I love that it’s gone from Nijika being the foundation of the band to her looking to Bocchi as the foundation! I love it!! Thank you so much for the comment and the kind words!

romaniablack

RULE OF 8! YES! 😀Thank you for the comment and kind words! That’s very nice of you, so I appreciate that!! Ah, I had not heard about the special chapter - maybe I can read it at the last episode? I don’t know if you’re on the discord or not, but if you want to comment with a link to the chapter or if someone in the discord can share a link to it, that would be cool and I’d appreciate it! 😀I’m so excited for the rest of this season AND for season 2 (so happy we’re getting that next year…or whenever we’re getting it)!
