I walked into this COMPLETELY blind and ooohhh, what a great decision to make, so I won't spoil too much here! I'll let the episode speak for itself.

What I will say is that this is checking off ALL the boxes for me so far and I have not been this hyped for a new series in a while now! Let's FRIGGIN' GO this summer...and see about this whole "Hikaru dying" thing. ;)

I'm so happy that you're reacting to this! I love this manga/anime a lot and I'm so excited. The premise of this story is just so interesting. An entity using the body of your dead best friend and you're the only one who knows...the only one to mourn him. Add the queer themes and horror elements and I'm sold lol

This is going to get personal: So I started reading this manga months ago. I need to go back and reread the very beginning. With watching the anime, it is bringing up a bunch of feelings for me. Mostly a feeling of loss. When my mother died in April, it was a surprise. I don’t know why it was a surprise, she was in hospice for two months! The nurse said she was not going to live much longer. I guess I was like, “she looks fine”, even if she did not behave fine! She wasn’t the woman I knew for a long time. She was a different person who looked like my mom. It’s a strange feeling. I even got angry. Heck, I’m still angry. Tbh, I’m a bit jealous of Yoshiki. What I wouldn’t give to have just a second more with my mother. I can understand what he is going through with a death of someone close to him. I was at work last week talking to my co workers about what I’m going through settling the estate. I ran into a snag and I was blaming my mom. I blurted out, “ I wish I could yell at her and ask what she was thinking!” Then I started to get misty eyed. I was surprised at myself, I felt her not being in the world at that moment. I’ve kept myself busy and organized telling myself I’ll deal with the loss after things settle down. They are settling down…… This story takes place 6 months after Hikaru went missing for a week, sometimes it takes a while to deal with things. Apparently for Yoshiki, it took that long to confront this doppelgänger. I feel he is just now coming to terms with just starting a grieving process. Unfortunately, it’s complicated! I love your analysis of what is going on with the whole episode. You had brought up Dr Who. I always think of Torchwood, “The New World “ in that episode, no one dies! Except they die. And this is world wide so that’s a problem. https://youtu.be/OoTBZ0-GESk?si=q1wWN2bbIlHAwwhw I always think about that episode….. as much as we want our deceased loved ones to stay, it’s a good thing they move on. It’s a very selfish wish. I absolutely love the atmosphere of this series so far. You can feel the heat and humidity on your skin, you hear the cicadas that are only heard in summer. Right now, I step outside my door and I feel and hear all of that. Then there is the horror. I absolutely love horror, so this is right up my alley. I think BL and horror go well together. There are certainly elements that I can imagine are aspects of being in the queer community that end up lending themselves to horror. There is misunderstanding, being an outsider, paranoia, fear, possibly betrayal. The current political climate in the US lends itself to this nightmare. I can only imagine what a fucking nightmare some people are trying to make other peoples lives. Now, remember, this story takes place in a small rural Japanese village , and Yoshiki having feelings for his friend. Horrifying. I hope this wasn’t all over the place. Yeah, I love this series but for other reasons. I am looking forward to the next episode!

I love how anime nailed the "eeriness" and generali creepiness of a small rural town in the mountains. They really gone for it with a shots, lightning, sounds, face mimics etc. My favourite thing is Romania finding new anime with a "mystery" tag. It's glorious every time. It's going to be such a ride with whiteboard-kun! Thank you so much for reacting to this series, can't wait for the next episodes, I'm so exited!

My totally inconsequential comment is that their favorite manga (Master + Master) is a clear Hunter x Hunter parody which was also amusingly the original inspiration for the dynamics of main couple in Bloom Into You. Also, Hikaru saying Yoshiki is like "Emil" is a reference to Demian by Hermann Hesse which I believe is a commonly assigned book for school in Japan for some reason. So it also gets small references in Utena and loads of other series.

Had a whole dissertation written and accidentally closed the tab... "I'm sorry miss, my cat ate my verbose comment !" Anyway here are my thoughts : I just started this anime, and suffice to say I am OBSESSED. Like for you, this checks aaaall my boxes. Had heard about the manga a few months ago (all great things), but I put off reading it because some people were arguing that it "technically wasn't a BL". Turns out, this show is gay AF, in a well written, compelling, non-stereotypical and non-fetishized way (which representation of gay men in fiction severely lack IMO). I think the author removed the BL tag to reach broader audiences ? And those claiming it isn't one are probably doing so in response to people who discard and rule out this awesome piece of fiction for its queer main characters. But come on. From this first episode alone, I think there are near zero ambiguity as to the queerness of the characters and the themes, so in my eyes it's valid to call it BL. Now, the horror premisse of the show is already great, and right up my alley. The classic metaphysical question of "are you just your memories or are you something more" is a favorite of mine. Usually it's explored through sci-fi with cloning or teleportation shenanigans, but the situation here is very similar. After all, this entity has all of Hikaru's memories and personality, so how is the current situation (Hikaru dying and getting possessed/revived by this parasite) any different than Hikaru gaining the memories of being a weird parasite ? Thus, although this Hikaru is obviously not the same (but not dissimilarly to the way we're all not the same as we were 10 years ago), I do believe there is a part of Hikaru still alive through this being... or even that a part of this being lives in Hikaru... or is there even a difference ? Or perhaps it's just me being too hopeful that the doomed yaoi isn't too doomed xDDD.

Of course it's hard to tell from just the small flash back of actual Hikaru, but I do think it's supposed to hint that Hikaru liked Yoshiki. (That's how I read it at least). Especially the "you'd find a girlfriend easily" to me reads like "I find you so great of course you're a catch".

Oh yeah, in the discussion, I was right there with those clues - but I try not to say conjecture is confirmation, so I just put my theories out there and then see if the show gives us more evidence as we go! ;) But I did catch those moments and mentioned them in the discussion! Just wanted to let you know that I did get the references!

Oh noooo hahaha, you know, I actually have had the “dog ate my homework” reason given by a student…and saw the bite marks on the essay, sooooo… XD Thanks for offering your thoughts and for the kind words! I am OBSESSED with this show and am so looking forward to the discussions I have cooked up for some later episodes! And yeah, the people that say this isn’t a BL – are in a huge state of denial. ANYWAY! Gay AF, yes, and amazingly written! 🙂Honestly, I feel bad, because there are actually LOTS of series that feature gay relationships in a “non-fetishized” way, people just don’t pay the mind to research them or pay attention when readers are talking about them. I digress. It makes me sad and mad that the author removed the BL tag, because this is clear as DAY a BL and it makes me sad that queer media continues to be marginalized as less than other pieces of fiction - which to be honest - there is heterosexual romance that is JUST as fetishized as the yaoi the critics pick out and way worse written…ugh, I could go on a tangent about this, but I’ll save it! But yeah, this series is amazing so far and I can’t wait to get into it even further! Let’s see what the show gives us, but thank you for the comment!

It’s so good to hear from you in the comments, Moomin! I’m so sorry for your mother passing - my uncle was in Hospice towards the end of his life, so I can somewhat relate to the feeling of “them looking similar to themselves but not acting it,” But still, I cannot imagine what you went through. And WOW, to hear that connection to this story and the idea of being able to be with that person, even though know it’s “not them” is so powerful. You got me misty-eyed with your personal account about the real estate. Keeping busy is honestly such a valid way of handling grief; I’m glad you’ve gotten things to settle down somewhat for you. Thank you for the kind words - Yoshiki is dealing with A LOT and I’m amazed he’s a teen able to work through it the way he is! Ooohhh, I remember that Torchwood episode and that’s such a good clip to play - thanks for harkening back to that! Hark-ening…I’ll stop now. 😛 The atmosphere is so well done in this series so far and suffocating and humid and the timing of it coming out right now is perfect. It’s miserable where I live at so I feel this series through the screen! And yes, BL and Horror mix well - I have several friends who are gay and talk about how much they love horror and explain it for the reasons you put down here as well! Having grown up in a small rural town, even though it’s not Japan, I’ve definitely seen actions that would explain why Yoshiki would be hesitant with all of this. Thank you so much for the comment!
