**EXPOSED HEADPHONE WARNINGS**

*TRIGGER WARNING: Abuse, gore, self-harm, & SA-adjacent themes/content are in this film*

Where...do I even start? I had to take an intermission in the middle of this FOUR HOUR extravaganza! Here's the recipe for this film:

Add 1 part Kung Fu Hustle, A shot of Quentin Tarantino, a cup of religious symbolism, a dash of romance, a pint of perversion, and a slice of 2008 humor and this film will take you on a gory, deep journey into Japanese family structure, the lack of connection in relationships, and how faith can be so easily manipulated and warped. WHAT a film!

I've scoured youtube and I believe you're the only reactor to this film, otherwise there are a handful of cinephilic reviewers who post about Love Exposure. I'm curious if any of your other subscribers have seen it, but it may be an audience of one for your reaction. Going into the reaction I was interested to see a female take on the absurd panty shot stuff. A training arc for panty shots with its tone of 'mock seriousness' is so ridiculous. The actor for Yu is a jpop singer who had only one acting part before Love Exposure. I was even more impressed with his performance after learning that. Drag suits him, definitely agree with you on that.

The writer/director (Sion Sono) has accrued about ~35 films (i've seen about 15 of them). He mentioned life experience being an inspiration for his films... according to his bio he ran away from home to Tokyo at 17 where upon his arrival met a girl who threatened to kill herself if he didn't pretend for her parents to be her husband, which he did for several weeks. He then joined a cult which offered him food and shelter which be obliged since he was living on the streets. He left the cult at some point but was tracked down and threatened, since leaving the cult was forbidden. In order to stave off the cultists, Sono joined a terrorist group that was then protesting the expansion of an international airport... a series of bad decisions which inspired the character Yu? Perhaps, but what a crazy life. Sono's writes a lot about either organized group cults or cults of personality. In Love Exposure, we get a version of cult which is more akin to something like Maoist re-education rather than the 'great leader' variation. We only see bits and pieces of the cult indoctrination process, but you bring up something interesting: is Yu is faking his own indoctrination (we learn that he was) - but I pose the question, how possible is it to fake your own indoctrination when in the presence of powerful thought reform techniques of social coercion? Even if you tell yourself you're only pretending, how many weeks or months will it take before you forget whether or not you're really pretending? What is the psychological effect of confessing wrong-think and reciting right-think *under group social pressure* - how hard would it be to maintain one's secret identity? Not the central point of Love Exposure, but Sono likes to explore this topic of immensely powerful social-psychological influence.

Loved the reaction and discussion! Got through this over a few sittings, with several along with my weekend morning coffee. Perfect way to start the day. 😆 I have to say it was really interesting to watch someone who had no idea what they were walking into. The first time I watched this was in about 2009 or 2010 and I knew generally what I was getting into (as I had seen some of Sion Sono’s work previously), and it was a cinema day trip with some friends so was An Experience! May be part of why this was actually a lot less violent than I recalled, less of a heightened environment. Love the use of music as this kind of constant sacred/profane running engine, I think because a lot of music used is so recognisable it is something which really helps with the runtime. I do feel that you were very generous with the ‘could have shaved off 20-30min,’ I’d say chop this thing in half and it’d work just as well. 🤣 But I get the creative/thematic aspect of the endurance exercise. Think the actors all did so well with the material and it was fun to see so many cameos by Japanese comedians and various talent. But I have to specifically highlight Sakura Ando (Aya) because she is one of my absolute favourite actors! 🥰 And this was one of her earliest roles. I am on a very long journey of making sure that I see the entirety of her filmography. Adore her and this was amazing work, and a great example at how naturally she comes across in any role! 🥰 I do think that this suffers from the perennial problem in works which claim to lampoon, satirise and/or address objectifying misogyny – it is unable to depict and critique without fully indulging in it for entertainment and titillation. I have some incredibly uncharitable opinions as to why but I'll save it. And you know, I think it still ended up having a better go of it than Berserk claims to. 🤣 Now themes of resistance?! A smorgasbord. 😆 Especially against institutional, religious and cult control. Love the way it ridicules performative purity and exposes the hypocrisy of some of the rituals everyone is forced to take part in. The way Yu attempts to ‘manufacture sin’ to try to give his father what he wants was just so painful to watch. And then, especially with Aya’s story, this shows very clearly how that kind of trauma forces obedience and the ways cults/religions/groups take advantage of this very specific kind of vulnerability. This was really fun to revisit. Thank you to Sean for this commission! 🥰 Looking forward to next week! 💙

I can so see it! The way that it vibes up there with NGE and other series that are avant garde is so apparent! Thank you for the comment - I'm so glad you got to witness me experiencing the madness! :D

I'M THE ONLY ONE?! I feel so honored! But apparently (based on the comments here and YT) there are quite a few viewers who have seen it, so that's cool! Honestly, if it wasn't handled with SUCH farce and over-the-top drama, the panty-shot plotline could have easily been cringy and annoying, but somehow it just...plays into the ridiculousness of it all - it's Dated, to be sure, but it does it with a wink and a nod to how bad it is AND it ends up playing a role in Yu's downfall, so it ties in perfectly. I can't believe the actor for Yu hasn't done acting outside this movie - he did so well! And the drag persona was amazing!

It’s interesting to see how this is somewhat based on experiences in his life - I wondered with how insane this film was if it was based in “some” form of experience. Someone on YouTube commented on their…somewhat problematic issue with harassment and women, which is unfortunate to hear, but then…viewing this movie…anyway! A series of bad decisions might be art imitating life? The cult plotline was really well done in the movie. But yes, I felt like even though he thought he was “faking” indoctrination, in SOME ways, he was indoctrinated, as when how he broke down at the end. That’s an awesome question to posit in all this! And your breakdown is very important to think about while watching this film! Thank you for commissioning this movie - I would never have known about it otherwise, and it was definitely a cinematic experience everyone needs to see at least once and ponder about!

Thank you for the comment and kind words! I don’t blame you for taking a few sittings with this one! I was so floored by this movie and what an experience!! I can only imagine a day of watching this! The heightened environment I think helped to balance but also make you expect more gory and bloody violence than was expected. The music was such a great element of the movie! HAHAHA, the idea of chopping in half - I MEAN, I could see that, too, but there were some creative/thematic parts, like you said, that needed to stay there! 🙂 I love that there were cameos throughout this - that’s great! Sakura Ando was SO good as Aya - legendary acting, honestly! Okay, so I now EXACTLY what you mean - the lampoon of it all makes it hard to critique without missing to acknowledge the point of it, but yeah, I could have gotten into that more, but it was a long movie already! 😛 But, yeah, don’t get me started on Berserk – that’s for its own video essay. SO. MANY. THEMES. OF. RESISTANCE. So many. In all shapes and sizes. I HATED watching Yu “manufacturing sin” to appease to someone - I just wanted to hug him. And yeah, Aya’s whole storyline was right up there in opposition to his own. This movie, if anything, really makes you think about all of that and how our trauma from our younger years influences a lot of what drives us into adulthood. Thank you for the comment and kind words!! This month has been a ride with the commissions!
